Notes/Commercial Description:
This malty, full-bodied double alt is also known as “Stickebier” – German slang for “secret brew”. Long Trail Double Bag was originally offered only in our brewery taproom as a special treat to our visitors. With an alcohol content of 7.2%, please indulge in moderation. The Long Trail Brewing Company is proud to have Double Bag named Malt Advocate’s “Beer of the Year” in 2001. Malt Advocate is a national magazine devoted to “expanding the boundaries of fine drinks”. Their panel of judges likes to keep things simple, and therefore of thousands of eligible competitors they award only two categories: “Imported” and “Domestic”. It is a great honor to receive this recognition.

Appearance: Clear brown with ruby chestnut hues. Slight khaki head with very little retention. The color is fantastic

Aroma: Lots of malts. Toasty graininess. Candied fruits. Caramel. Some brown sugar. A little spice (maybe cinnamon). The aroma screams autumn to me

Taste: Follows the nose with a crisp fruity sweetness followed by some rustic spice with a pleasant hop bitterness on the end. Spicy and warming. Alcohol is noticeable as it warms. Complex and delicious

Mouthfeel: Crisp and full-bodied. Clean. Very pleasant on the palate.

Overall: Impressed by this one. My favorite from Long Trail

Bottle from Harvest Market
Pours a fairly clear medium amber color with a smallish off white head that dissipates fairly quickly. Aromas of caramel toffee and brown sugar with just a hint of butterscotch. Earthy bitterness in the aroma keeps this in check. The flavor is sweet rich sugars with some melanoids and a bit of burnt sneaking in there. Earthy bitterness with a touch of burnt butter round us out. Medium body with a moderate level of carbonation. There is a bit of diacetyl here and that usually turns me off to a beer, but this is one of the rare instances where I think it works within the frame of the rest of the brew.

Drank out of the can so only flavor notes.

The beer has a rich maltiness towards a hefty brown ale. Caramel sweetness, nuttiness, toasted malt, almost even some coffee and chocolate. There's a punch of deeply sweet and roasted apples in there with that fruit quality coming through. On the back, it attacks of herbal and cleans off quite nicely.

Not the altbier I'm familiar with from Dusseldorf, but it's a higher ABV, richer, and a good drinking beer.

As someone who enjoys some malty brews, this is a decent attempt.

A - Bright, amber hued. Small head on pour, dissipating quickly. Unassuming appearance.

S - Caramel, toffee, and butterscotch dominate the aroma.

T - Nutty with lager-type malt characteristics. Roasted malt nicely balanced in the background. No indication of alcohol.

M - Creamy and full yet crisp. Medium-low carbonation that works well with the flavor.

O - A deceptively strong alt-beer perfect for a breezy summer evening. Could wish for a better head but the flavor compensates somewhat.

Pours with a bit of haze but brilliant golden orange and bronze. A fat head of tan foam that falls slowly and leaves lace. Nose is rich malt an a light floral. Biscuit and a bit of sweetness. Tatse is malty and layered. Lots of malt with a softly floral hop backnote to give it a sensational sweetness and wonderfull impression. Medium mouthfeel, crisp and with a slight tingle from alcohol this one finishes dry and slightly bitter, with a long lingering aftertaste of creamy biscuit, smooth light caramel and a malty resonance.

Dapper, well crafted and simply great! There's a restrained hops character on this that seems to stand back politely.
