This malty, full-bodied double alt is also known as “Stickebier” – German slang for “secret brew”. Long Trail Double Bag was originally offered only in our brewery taproom as a special treat to our visitors. With an alcohol content of 7.2%, please indulge in moderation. The Long Trail Brewing Company is proud to have Double Bag named Malt Advocate’s “Beer of the Year” in 2001. Malt Advocate is a national magazine devoted to “expanding the boundaries of fine drinks”. Their panel of judges likes to keep things simple, and therefore of thousands of eligible competitors they award only two categories: “Imported” and “Domestic”. It is a great honor to receive this recognition.

A: Tight head that doesn't last too long but it does leave tight lacing.

S: Caramel, dusty, yeasty, doughy.

T: Heavy, sweet caramel and a strong, not sweet, dough-like yeastiness again; bracing herbal hops follow and cut through the sweetness quickly. Remarkably balanced. Really quite tasty, and the alcohol is not noticeable.

M: Medium fullness, fits the flavor perfectly.

O: Everything works well together, and this is remarkably easy to drink in spite of the abv. I want another, and it's a tough act for the Single Bag to follow.

Pour had a nice 1/4" of light beige foam over a crystal clear amber body with notes of copperish-orange on the perimeter and moderate effervescence. Scent is very, very rich in the malt department with impressive notes caramel and darker fruits (cherry, berry) countered by an ever so slight herbal hoppy zest. Taste follows, adding notes of breadiness and the fruit esters playing really nice in both the taste and aftertaste. Feel is on the lighter side albeit with those fruity alcoholic esters poking through prominently giving the impression of more heft. Aftertaste has a surprisingly high degree of bitterness after being quite subdued, but this helps avoid a cloying sweetness that could've sunk this brew. An interest style and an interesting offering!

Copper-colored beer with a miniscule white head. Sweet, malty nose with notes of graham cracker and vanilla. Smooth, low in carbonation, medium-bodied. Pleasant, but could use a twist of some sort. It's very straightforward.

I rarely say this, but I'd like more hop presence here.

(12 oz bottle, no date/code, newer label/branding; purchased single off shelf... poured into a 14 oz mug)

L: polished-clear, tea-like, dark amber liquid; finger-high, bouncy brownish foam on the pour... scant, scattered lace nugglets

S: gloriously dark-caramelly malt in 3D, ooh baby... almost an apple-cherry juice fruitiness...touch of 'high-order' aromatics from the booze and deep toast of the grain

T: light but dense herbal bitterness up the middle, enveloped by rich, round, robust, near light molasses-y, caramelly malts; subtle roasty-toasty edge to the barley syrup... finishes relatively dry, with a mild lingering vaguely maple syrup-on-waffle note, as well as some cedar-woody accents

F: lager-like polished roundess to its light-medium body... the roast-booze-bitter elements create some moderate frictive warmth mid-top palate... delicate carbonic sizzle gives almost just enough lift to its surface

O: used to drink and enjoy this more often; might've only had it once since ca. 2008... as an Alt, it's not half bad; as an American old school craft quasi-take on one, it's quite lovely... I'd be glad to grab a sixer of this any time of the year (1914)

For this one, it really shouldn't take more than one brown twelve ounce bottle, emptied into a clear Imperial pint glass, to understand what's going on. The color is a dark copper, somewhat bright and somewhat translucent. There's almost no head and no glass lacing at all. The aroma is a pleasantly malted one, not too sweet, but malty and basically hopless. It's a good thing there's more hops in the taste here. Instead of becoming a sweet maltfest, this is a great example of how barley malt and hops can get along nicely. Of course, as an Altbier, it shouldn't have the hoppiness of an American IPA. That it doesn't and remains true to its style only garnishes respect. Malty, earthy and hoppy enough and with an adequate body, this is a good one. It's been around for more than twenty years for good reasons.

Poured from a 12 oz bottle pulled from a variety pack. Pours dark amber with minimal head and lacing. Tastes of sweet dark malt with a slight caramel roasting. Very good.

Look: It pours cloudy brown with an off white head. He retention is moderate.

Smell: It has a malty and slightly nutty aroma. It has a vinous like quality to it with some bread.

Taste: It has a vinous quality in the flavor as well with some nutty flavors. There are some light bready elements as well. There is a hint of cherry in the background.

Feel: It has a medium body with some alcohol warming.

Overall, an interesting tasting beer with vinous flavors which adds a different dimension to it.

Pours a clear burnt sienna from the bottle, quarter-inch off white head that settles to a thin ring. Nose leads with sweet red apple, treated leather, imitation banana, clove, baking spice, gingerbread. Taste is pretty mild and follows - school lunch MacIntosh apple, brown bread, sweet molasses, treacle, very mild noble hop. Mouthfeel is moderate, light carbonation, and overall pretty smooth. Hides the 7.2% pretty well.
