This malty, full-bodied double alt is also known as “Stickebier” – German slang for “secret brew”. Long Trail Double Bag was originally offered only in our brewery taproom as a special treat to our visitors. With an alcohol content of 7.2%, please indulge in moderation. The Long Trail Brewing Company is proud to have Double Bag named Malt Advocate’s “Beer of the Year” in 2001. Malt Advocate is a national magazine devoted to “expanding the boundaries of fine drinks”. Their panel of judges likes to keep things simple, and therefore of thousands of eligible competitors they award only two categories: “Imported” and “Domestic”. It is a great honor to receive this recognition.

i forget sometimes how much i don't like this beer. i see long trail on sale occasionally and buy it hopin' it'll be better than last time. i mean it's from vermont--so it's 'sposed to be good. maybe i just don't like the style.

i find it flavorless. weird but true. a faint maltiness. no hops whatsoever. and a bad aftertaste.

doesn't leave a lot of lace on the glass.

i have to remember i don't like this. (410 characters)

I had one good one, once. It was a 16 oz can and was really tasty. But I've had it again, more times than I could reasonably remember, and all have been awful. Skunky and funky and no bueno. Many bottles, many pints. All terrible except for one. It's almost mythical and actually I keep trying this beer like a sucker, hoping for another good one. (347 characters)

A - A dark amber, hazy in the middle. Decent head that laces moderately. But pretty minimal overall.

S - Dark fruits and hops. Almost smells like a dubbel.

T - Meh. Plum, raisin, plum, peaches, and a some cheap malt taste. There's flavor here but it's kind of musty and gross. Definitely a high-profit beer. These are some low quality input ingredients.

M - A bit light. Would benefit from being a bit heavier.

D - A great beer if you're in high school. Otherwise, a pretty shallow offering. Kinda gross. Real musty. Not fresh tasting at all. Imagine licking a storm cellar that's never been frequented in 20 years. Yeah. (627 characters)

12oz into a snifter.
Pours a caramel/amber color with an almost non-existent head which disappears instantly to leave a thin topping. Smells caramel, some cereals, little earthy notes, slightly herbal at the back. Flavors are very mild and clean. Similar to the nose and, in my opinion, not so enjoyable. Moderate carbonation with low bitterness. I didn't like this one. Wonder if it's a bad bottle or I just don't like the style... (432 characters)

Straight to the point...
The overwhelming taste here is...booze.
That shouldn't be the forefront of any beer.
Other flavors include caramel, toffee, prunes. Like drinking a port.
Some nice flavors in there, but the booze hits first and lingers around the other flavors for too long.
Not my kind of thing. (304 characters)

A- Nice rich color, like a peach toned iced tea. Low head very little head retention with moderate lace.

S- There is a very boozy front note with hints of nuts. Very light, slightly watery on back end.

T- Very light flavor, A little malty on front end. gets a bit watery in the middle and finishes light and slightly bready.

M- Light, no coating at all and the watery middle is not very desirable.

O- A very light beer, the wateriness is not pleasant. The malt flavors would be nice but they die out far to quickly and there is no complexity to the flavor. Not very drinkable (581 characters)

On tap in a shaker pint. See-thru copperish amber with an off-white head a finger or so in height. Good retention, scattered patches of drippy lacing.

For an alt, especially a sticke version, this is pretty tame stuff. Smells of caramel malt and little else. Taste is again pretty malty, but there's just not a lot going on here. Buttery and bready with very light leafy and baked apple notes. Clean and crisp for sure- obviously a brew constructed with care- but not something I'd revisit. (492 characters)

This brew is an amber color with a two finger white head.
Its aroma is faint, but is malty sweet.
The flavor starts out roasty and incredibly sweet but is given some balance by a little bit of hop character near the finish. There is also a slight alcohol warmness in the flavor as well.
Mouth feel is medium bodied, but semi thick from the sugar, a bit syrupy for me. (371 characters)

a little too malty for me, but not an undrinkable beer. as a strong ale, this one is pretty good. somewhat sweet malt and a smooth rich consistency. i can't say i would get it again, but it was not the worst strong ale i have had (229 characters)

Date: 08/30/14
Type: 12oz. Bottle
Bottled: 07/18/14
Glass: Lawson's Tulip

* First, I need to mention that I made the mistake of sampling this side by side w/ Freigeist Hoppeditz (a true Doppelsticke Alt from the Dusseldorph region of Germany), which was a huge mistake as it showed all the glaring weaknesses of this attempted American rendition.

Pours a light brown almost golden in color w/ only a few bubbles of carbonation that produced little to no lacing. Aromas of candied sugar, treacle, caramel, light toffee, and that somewhat signature German yeast/basement mustiness. The taste was almost like the nose, candied and caramel/toffee up front, leading into booziness and herbal hops. Medium bodied and a touch lush and slightly sticky, versus clean and crisp like a good Alt should. Somewhat drinkable, the stickiness that it should not have hinders it severely.

Overall, a good try from Long Trail at a true Doppelsticke Alt, but I still felt bad for it in the glass next to Freigeist! It is very hard to duplicate such a delicate German style that is so refined, which is why so few American breweries dabble in them. (1,140 characters)

Poured from a 12oz bottle into a tulip glass.

Appearance - Moderately dark amber color with NO head at all. Straight pour down the middle at a moderate speed and no head. A lighter shade of gold around the base of my tulip, turns to the darker amber as it gets to the bulb.

Smell - Smells sweet, notes of fruit; dates, plums and pears.

Taste - Unique....very sweet, beginnning to the end. Slight sour apple taste at the end.

Mouthfeel - Very bad, but I think I have an old bottle. I checked the year, and it is an 09; but judging by complete lack of head and little to no carbonation, I think it might be old.

Drinkability - Unique...but I couldn't see myself drinking more then 1; so I would say it is low. (713 characters)

Pours a dark, brownish orange. Minimal head, but this was the sort of bar where if you put a head on a guy's Bud Light he might offended, so I'll let that slide.

Smells surprisingly hoppy, for an alt. Earthy, bocky grain against nobel hops with some esters of ethanol.

Tastes good up front, super sweet in the middle, and very alcoholic in the back. Starts out pretty well balanced with a good blend of hops and zippy malt. Then the zippiness zips further, becomes far too intense and sweet.

I dunno. I remember hearing about Double Bag way back in 2005 or so--back in the day, it was possible for malt bombs to generate buzz, believe it or not. Maybe my pallet has just been destroyed by the extremeness of the modern beer scene, or maybe this was just an off batch. Either way, I was let down. (806 characters)

Drank it from the bottle and noticed it was a bit sweet with hop bitterness and noticed more of a alcohol taste and realized what the hell the ABV was...I was surprised. I detected some citrus notes as well. I was warm and fuzzy when it hit the gut. I have to say that I won't be looking to get it again. Too much of an alcohol taste causing more of a bite than I would like when enjoying a beer. (396 characters)

I was a bit dissapointed with this one. It was a nice enough burnt orange colour with a nice, yet modest, thin white head. The aromas were all over the board, but they contained the "melon-like" aromas that I have only previously picked up in the recent Thomas Jefferson Tavern Ale from Yards. The taste was very melon-y and not very "alt-like" (or "double-alt-like") at all, IMVHO. The mouthfeel was creamy yet thin and the drinkability was not the best. This brew is definately Interesting and different, but it is also definately not one of my favorite alt biers or strong ales! (581 characters)

Pours a reddish amber color with minimal foal.

Smell is malty and fruity.

Taste is harsher than I liked - the hops start and finish and hang around a lot longer than I would care to say. In between there is a mixture of tastes I can quite pinpoint, none of it terribly pleasing.

I would not go back to this one. Way to bitter without enough taste throughout the offset it. (376 characters)

Pours a rusty copper color with almost zero head in my snifter glass. Minimal lacing as well. This beer is fairly clear, in spite of the fact it's a darker beer. The nose is caramel malt, nutty aroma, and that's about it. Fairly weak nose on this beer. The taste follows suit, with a little bit of hops thrown in. The feel is thin, with a nutty aftertaste. Overall, I'm not a fan of this beer. Glad I got to try the style though. Cheers. (437 characters)

A: Amber body... moderate white body.. little lacing...

S: Bland malt character... soft...

T: Sweet roasted malts... some milky caramel.. not much going on here... slight bitter hop finish

M: Medium bodied... a kind of viscous feel towards the end..

D: Over all its ok... i'd probably never choose this one again though. (325 characters)

A_Clear brown with an off wite one finger head. Settles in as a decent sized cap.

S_Aroma is not very strong. Mild fruity esters and sweet malt.

T_The beggining of this is very fruity, pineapple and papaya like tropical fruit dominate. This is followed up by an extreme malt rush akin to a dark liquid malt extract. The finish is mildly boozy and give a slight bitter edge which veers towards the vegetable side of things.

M_Slightly on the thicker/syrup side of things, mild carbonation.

D_Meh. The fruity esters tend to dominate here and it isn't too good of a thing. A passable beer at best, at best. (607 characters)

Appearance: Poured a clear brown amber, with one finger bubbly/foamy white head. Not much head, but stuck around in a thin layer on top. Moderate lacing.

Smell: Nose of caramel and lightly roasted malts at first. A sharp and sweet green apple fragrance down deep. Kind of cider-like.

Taste: Mild caramel malts and mild sweetness, with an apple twang. Not that “strong”.

Mouthfeel: Medium-bodied and incredibly smooth. Creamy feeling in the mouth, without actually being “creamy”. Not much carbonation bite at all. No alcohol bite either.

Drinkability: Little wimpy tasting for a strong ale. Looks good and tastes alright, but the nose is a strange one. Easy to drink though; the ABV never shows up.

Thanks to BigTomZ for this one!

This pours a crystal clear shade of medium brown. A light brown colored head of loose foam, just less than a fingers worth, forms and dissipates rapidly. Lacing is decent, but very slippery.

A good nose, filled with mild malt notes. A good touch of breadiness. Light hints of fruity sweetness. A tiny trace of caramel.

I expected this one to be more sweet and malty. It has a very 'german' malt profile. That is to say that the malts are very mild, in presence and flavor, and lean more to the earthy side of the scale than sweet. Definite kiss of hops, right at the end.

An almost full body with a light level of carbonation. It suffers from it's lack of carbonation, which makes it seem almost oily, but not in a good way.

I really wanted to like this, but I just don't. It doesn't seem, to me, like they stayed true to the styler, either. It seems like they tried to do something a touch different, which is commendable. Unfortunaely, risk sometimes rewards and sometimes it doesn't. I don't think that it has, this time. (1,130 characters)

Poured a light amber color with a little head that leaves some lacing behind. Smells of malts, some hops, but mostly an ether type smell. Taste has a good balance at the presentation till the end where it starts tasting like it smells. Feel is overall pretty smooth. It's a pretty average beer with a different taste. (317 characters)

Thanks to thirdeye11? for sharing this bottle.

The beer pours a yellow-orange color with a white head. The aroma is fairly bland, with some biscuit malt and not much else. The flavor is also lacking, with some bread, grain and a hint of grass. Thin mouthfeel and medium carbonation. Not much going on here. (307 characters)

I poured this beer into my tumbler at 45 degrees. The beer was a golden color and it poured a thin brown head. The head was gone instantly. The beer had a caramel smell with a big hoppy smell sitting on top of that. Caramel notes on the finish but hops blew that away. I will not buy again. (290 characters)

Bottled 17Sep07. Poured into a standard pint glass. Very clear, pale colored with no head. Smells of straw, bananas, and sweet toasted malt. Light in the mouth with some hops at the tail end. Seems German in style but reminds me of Foster's Special Bitter (that is not a good thing). I was a bit dissapointed from the label, I was really hoping for a double milk stout. Neh. I could easily live without this beer. (413 characters)

12 oz bottle into a pint glass.

A: Pours a clear copper color. The head is a one finger off-white shade, and while it's relatively creamy looking, it doesn't have the best retention.

S: The malt is typically toffee-forward, but with that faint German touch to it. Namely, stone fruits and just a hint of diacetyl. There's a hop profile that's very mellow yet still noticeable. Not bad, not bad at all.

T: Loads of toffee start this one off. The flavor even gets faintly nutty at times, with some nice apricot notes right after the swallow. There does seem to be a touch of alcohol flavor (along with a faint burn) on the finish. I have to say that overall, the flavor profile isn't my cup of tea.

M: It's actually kind of coarse, and even slightly angular in feel. This helps to give it pretty good drinkability in spite of its maltiness. Carbonation is light, which somehow suits this one.

O: This isn't my (double) bag, as the scores reflect. Still, I don't hate it. Decent to try if you're looking for something different, but I wouldn't recommend a full 6 pack. (1,070 characters)
