This malty, full-bodied double alt is also known as “Stickebier” – German slang for “secret brew”. Long Trail Double Bag was originally offered only in our brewery taproom as a special treat to our visitors. With an alcohol content of 7.2%, please indulge in moderation. The Long Trail Brewing Company is proud to have Double Bag named Malt Advocate’s “Beer of the Year” in 2001. Malt Advocate is a national magazine devoted to “expanding the boundaries of fine drinks”. Their panel of judges likes to keep things simple, and therefore of thousands of eligible competitors they award only two categories: “Imported” and “Domestic”. It is a great honor to receive this recognition.

From the 22 ounce bottle, it pours amber with a small head. Lacing as the beer is enjoyed. Malty to the nose and tongue. Tiny bubbles also continue as you enjoy the beer.

Pours a clear copper, left a quarter in white head that dissipated almost completely. Leaves a fair amount of lacing behind on the glass.

The smell is fairly muted, sweet fruity yeast/malty aroma to be had.

A well developed malt foundation with an earthy herbal hop bite, of the types of hops to find in a beer this quality is probably my favorite. Dark brown bread and a grassy finish. Not bad at all. The bitterness lasts for a long while through the finish.

Medium light bodied, fairly mild carbonation. Oily feel coats your mouth after a swallow.

I wouldn't seek this brew out, but it was a pretty good one to try.

Definitely the superior Long Trail ale. This is well worth picking up a 6-pack next time in northern New England. One of the best beers I enjoyed up there over Labor Day weekend!

A very malty, full bodied brew with a meh after taste. I personally thinking they went too far with the malts, neglecting the other aspects of the beer. Nothing about it DiD or for me.

Bottle. This is an excellent Ale. It is a Full bodied Ale with a great taste and a good smell. This Ale is medium in color. You cannot go wrong with Long Trail.

A - Dark brown with hints of orange, transparent, a thin, tight white head that laces nicely as it goes down.

S - Very quiet, with a hint of malt honey-like sweetness and a bit of herbal bite, suggesting the bitterness that complements.

T - A much fuller sweetness up front, full of caramel notes and dark bread, followed by a smart bitter tack that fades back to bread in the close. The bitterness does build quietly over time, so that by the end of the second glass (bought as a 22 oz. bomber), there is a pretty strong thread of bitter to complement the washes of sweetness.

M - A bit sticky, but with enough carbonation to keep it clean.

O - A tasty malt-tilting brew, with enough hop bittering to keep it from being cloying. A good balance, and a pleasant drink that hides its powerful ABV.

I thought the cows on the label of this were a little strange when I first saw them, but boy are they appropriate, because this is creamy. Creamy feel, and it has a sweet creamy taste to it as well, there's like a mocha sort of flavor in here. A little bitterness and JUST enough alcohol seep through to give it some balance, and you're left with this semi-sweet, slightly bitter, almost coffee-like aftertaste. Excellent, excellent beer. Definitely a new favorite.

Get reacquainted with an old friend! For years, one has been able to pick up a Double Bag bomber, or six-pack, nearly anywhere in Vermont. Lately, 12-packs have become more common, and are a bargain at their price point!

Excellent strong stickebier. Love a malty powerhouse like this. It just tastes like real beer.

The only stronger beer i've had in remotely the same the category was Derf's (if anyone remembers that!)

This one's a winner in six packs @ 7.2%...8.99? Yes please.

Poured a light amber color with a little head that leaves some lacing behind. Smells of malts, some hops, but mostly an ether type smell. Taste has a good balance at the presentation till the end where it starts tasting like it smells. Feel is overall pretty smooth. It's a pretty average beer with a different taste.

I really like this beer and I'm not a huge fan of bitter dark brews. This is a tad more bitter than brown ales like Old Brown Dog, or Pig's Ear, somewhat more stout but with a similar color. It is moderately carbonated which makes it a lot more drinkable than a similar tasting (but much less metallic) steel reserve 211.

My first one here is a 24 oz bottle I got from a local grocery. The head retention was very good for the first 18 Oz or so, very good lacing.

If you like brown ales and wanted to try it, go for it.

Pours a dark, brownish orange. Minimal head, but this was the sort of bar where if you put a head on a guy's Bud Light he might offended, so I'll let that slide.

Smells surprisingly hoppy, for an alt. Earthy, bocky grain against nobel hops with some esters of ethanol.

Tastes good up front, super sweet in the middle, and very alcoholic in the back. Starts out pretty well balanced with a good blend of hops and zippy malt. Then the zippiness zips further, becomes far too intense and sweet.

I dunno. I remember hearing about Double Bag way back in 2005 or so--back in the day, it was possible for malt bombs to generate buzz, believe it or not. Maybe my pallet has just been destroyed by the extremeness of the modern beer scene, or maybe this was just an off batch. Either way, I was let down.

I'm not that familiar with the style, but damn this is a tasty beer. Great malt backbone without being too sweet and a nice mild hop character. Very drinkable at 7.2%.

I had had it years before and didn't care for it, this one was given to me from the rep, the other may have been old. The malt character jumped right out and there was no hint of the strength. Very tasty, malt sweetness without being too much. It was easy to drink and enjoy. I would like to try more of this style for comparison.

One of my go-to's, Long Trail is consistently good. I like that it is 7.2%, so you can catch a decent buzz of of 1 or 2, however you can't taste it. Relatively bitter, but something that could get you through your family picnick in a pinch. I reccomend it to all of my beer loving friends.

If you're looking to stick every rating here on at least one beer, this fits the just-above-the-middle-of-the-road rating. It's got a bitter aftertaste that takes away from the initial taste, but not so bitter that it runs it. It's...just above average.

Malta aroma. Brown in color. Low bitterness value at 33 ibus. Penetrating malt flavor lingers on the tongue. High abv is subtle in the taste. Not a highly prevalent beer style so don't really know how it stacks up.

Ive enjoyed this beer since its release. Finally reviewing it.
Poured from a 12 oz bottle into a snifter.
Pours a medium amber with half a finger of bubbly head.
Smells rich, malty and notes of alcohol.
Tastes quite nice, a rich, soft and not too sweet malt profile. Good alcohol kick here too.
Finishes a touch sweet.
This beer was one of the first big beers I ever had and I continue to enjoy it to this day.

Pours to a copper color with a white head; leaves some lacing, but not much. Looks appetizing.

Smells sweet, like honey. No alcohol smell despite the high ABV.

The label says it's "worth milking" because of the high ABV. But there is no boozy taste. It's sweet, and pleasant. It is worth milking, but you won't have to. It's got hints of caramel and gets a slightly warm, malty taste from the alcohol.

The aftertaste is of hops, with the bitterness that entails. But it's not overpowering. The mouthfeel is a bit off. It's too light-bodied, nut not bad. It's, well, average.

I really enjoy this beer--it's got so many things going for it, including the really nice taste, that they far outweigh the average mouthfeel.

This beer is good.
Little low on carbonation.
Nice alcoholic profile with a tinge of bitterness.
However the multiness is what shines in this fine alt.

Very good beer

I had one good one, once. It was a 16 oz can and was really tasty. But I've had it again, more times than I could reasonably remember, and all have been awful. Skunky and funky and no bueno. Many bottles, many pints. All terrible except for one. It's almost mythical and actually I keep trying this beer like a sucker, hoping for another good one.

12 oz. bottle poured into a nonic.

A- Burnt orange in color, with just a bit of haze. White head hangs low ,with some really nice speckled lacing.

S- Malty sweetness. Subtle caramel, a little nutty, and a very subtle raisin note.

T- Wonderful malt notes, like the aroma. Caramel and nutty, and a toasty, biscuity flavor comes in. Hop bitterness comes in to balance things, earthy, but still overshadowed by the malt.

M- Medium-full body. Nearly creamy. Malty sweet throughout, but this finish has some good bitterness, and leaves dry.

O- The malt notes are great. They are mellow, but the depth is nice, even after being settled out in lagering. Hop bitterness is great and cuts the sweetness some, but doesn't take over the beer.

Could be one of Long Trail's best, and altho VT is filled with craft, I'm regularly underwhelmed by LongTrail and Magic Hat.

A: Pours a very fizzy, bubbly 1 finger head over clear copper brown body, but I dont observe as much stickiness or lace as I would like to see. Bubbles are large and tan.

S: Dominated by sweet malts, dark bread, sugar. (Too sweet for me, but true to style - better in Dusseldorf!)

T: Follows smell. Somewhat crisp apple-like start, malty ales, then over the tongue lots of caramel and brown sugar, makes this too sweet for me and too back of tongue coating to love.
Lots of subtle nutty, mineral back notes, but too little hops, and too much sweetness for me.

F: Mouth is medium but the finish is too sweet and cola like for me.

A slight bit of booze at 7.2%, too much sweetness, an interesting mineral back note. Not much hop. I'd pick this over other long-trails, but only in a pinch.

Pours a dark yellow almost brown with a thick head that lasts for a bit. The smell is very sweet, both from the alcohol as well as the malt. The taste was really nice, balancing the sweet malt with the bitter hops to cancel out a bit of the intense alcohol flavor. I found it very nice and a good sipping beer that is easy to pair with large meals. Would highly recommend.

Straight to the point...
The overwhelming taste here is...booze.
That shouldn't be the forefront of any beer.
Other flavors include caramel, toffee, prunes. Like drinking a port.
Some nice flavors in there, but the booze hits first and lingers around the other flavors for too long.
Not my kind of thing.
