Notes/Commercial Description:
This malty, full-bodied double alt is also known as “Stickebier” – German slang for “secret brew”. Long Trail Double Bag was originally offered only in our brewery taproom as a special treat to our visitors. With an alcohol content of 7.2%, please indulge in moderation. The Long Trail Brewing Company is proud to have Double Bag named Malt Advocate’s “Beer of the Year” in 2001. Malt Advocate is a national magazine devoted to “expanding the boundaries of fine drinks”. Their panel of judges likes to keep things simple, and therefore of thousands of eligible competitors they award only two categories: “Imported” and “Domestic”. It is a great honor to receive this recognition.

Bought a six-pack at Table and Vine. Has a light, clear-brown appearance with a lasting lacing on the side. Aromas are quite strong with alcohol, malt, caramel, and some fruit flavoring. Maybe some burnt sugar or a maple flavor? Taste is great with a sweet, definitely maple flavor. Mouthfeel has a slight dairy feel, but it is pretty light and drinkable. Overall, a fantastic drink.

Aroma: Lots of crystal malt. Some pils & Munich in the background. Not bold overall.m Lightly roasty, mildly worty. Very sweet with a touch of bitter. Mild dark fruity esters.

Appearance: Deep copper. High clarity. Moderate white head. Good retention and tons of lacing.

Taste: Sweet and bitter malt. Much bolder than the aroma suggested. Bitter malt followed by the piney and floral hops. Clean lager finish. Little roastiness. Mild burnt caramel and subtle sulfur notes. Moderately worty.

Mouthfeel: Light to medium body. Mostly dry. Some residual sugars. Finishes quite dry. Mild to medium carbonation.

Overall: Nice bold brew. Start sweet, but qucikly turns to bitter malt and hops. Strong lingering aftertaste.

Notes: Drank on 5/5/2012.

Poured from a 12 oz bottle into a nonic tumber (don't have a stange)- pours a clear golden copper color, one finger of head, a thin layer of retention and a lil bit of patchy lacing.

Smell is very malty and a little fruity- lots of pale malt, a little bread, some banana, maybe a little pineapple.

Taste's good- lots of malt throughout, pretty consistent with the style. Definitely still get some banana, no pineapple, but actually get a little hop spice towards the end. Nice.

Mouthfeel is good- medium body, light to moderate carbonation of the soft, concentrated variety. Surprisingly good beer.

Sweet and malty with a hint of hops on the nose. Caramel, and some dark fruit.

Taste has a nice caramel sweetness to it with a dark fruit contingent also showing up. Far from cloying, it's pretty middle of the road. Small bitterness on the finish with some Euro hops giving it a somewhat dry finish that is still somewhat sweet.

Very smooth and drinkable beer...definitely a beer that tilts toward the malty side of the scale but without becoming sickly sweet...and it still has some balance at the end.

Poured into a 13 oz tulip glass, bottled on leap day 2012. Pours a clear orange red, with a 3 inch sticky off white head, lacing all over. Smell is biscuit, carmel, brown sugar, some pine hops, and figs. Taste is very balanced, lots of malts with a touch of hops in the finish. The body is medium large, plenty of life, more lush than dry, and very drinkable. This is very nice, I remember when this beer seemed giant, now it is easy going down.

Bottle at a few degrees F below room temperature, poured at 45 degree angle into unchilled stange glass.

A: bright mahogany with a tinge of gold. beautiful steady 1 1/2" thick head.

S: high amplitude: fruity with a tinge of hops, yet there's the richness of a much darker ale as well, with a tinge of roasted malt.

T: much as I expected from the smell: not too much of a surprise, but fantastic anyway. the same balance between pale-hale hoppinees and roasted malt richness is remarkably persistent: it doesn't change as it lingers on the palate.

M: the fizz is a little weak; it goes down a little too easy.

O: juxtaposes a variety of flavors, yet ends up being simple and accessible, and just remarkably pleasant, no matter what your level of sophistication or momentary proclivities may be. beautiful.

Poured from a 22 oz bomber into a bona-fide pint glass, with a second pour to capture the rest once there was room.

A: Double Bag is a hazy, lazy amber/copper, poured with one finger of beige head that rapidly disappears. The lacing is thick around the rim, at first, but it seems to cling less as this brew warms up.

S: Sweet, tart apple and heady caramel notes are abundant, gradually giving way to a subtler earthiness. Only little dots and blobs of lacing at the end.

T: Sweet and fruity with caramel notes that come to the forefront as it warms, and apple flavor that gives way to less sharp and less specific bouquet of fruity notes. There's a tartness and a minimal bitterness which slide on in at the end. Alcohol warmth and vapors knock on the door when close to room temp.

M: Smooth, a little syrupy and only lightly carbonated. Think I might have enjoyed this with a slightly higher level of carbonation. Mouthfeel is a little flat and boring as it is.

O: Aww, I don't want to leave on a negative note, so I'll say that I like you a lot Long Trail, but I think I'd rather stick with your flagship brew. Double Bag ain't bad, but if I want something on the slightly stronger, slightly sweeter side, I think I'd rather have a Geary's Hampshire Special.
