After having the very delicious Double Bag last week, I decided to do a vertical tasting of the following: Long Trail Ale, Double Bag, and Triple Bag. Based on the classy tastiness of Double Bag, I'm interested to see the way the brewer plays with malt.
Pours a brilliant amber with a nice white, fluffy head. Faint smell of malt and hops. Clear and bubbly. Decent lacing and head retentiion.
Very straight forward flavors of caramel and malt with a touch of fruit. The fruit is mellow, likely reflective of some minimal secondary fermentation time. A little bit of chew in the mouthfeel -- just enough to lift the body and keep it from feeling thin. The hops are on the earthy side and lead to a well-balanced, sessionable ale.
Very smooth, easy-drinking ale. Long Trail has seemed to hone in on nice interpretations of the altbier style. Perfect for Friday night beer and pizza.
