APPEARANCE: Pours utterly black with almost no carbonation. It has a very thin, deep mocha head. Almost no lacing.
SMELL: This brew has a lovely smell that combines a rich coffee and just a hint of chocolate. It's not an overpowering aroma. The smell is essentially a preview of how the beer tastes.
TASTE: This is a very roasty stout that (obviously) tastes of freshly-brewed coffee. If anything, the coffee taste is a bit overpowering and blocks out any other complexity. The finish provides a little bit of chocolate and malt.
MOUTHFEEL: The low carbonation provides a smooth mouthfeel with a small bite at the front of the tongue. It's really quite velvety in texture. This is the sort of beer that I like to let sit in my mouth for a few moments before I swallow it down.
DRINKABILITY: It's a very easy drinking stout considering the alcohol content. There's almost no alcohol bite. Though it's not terribly complex, it's a very smooth, warming stout. Give me a cold winter night, a blazing fireplace, and a pint of this stuff and I'm a happy man.
VERDICT: I'm a fan of stouts and porters. So, I was looking forward to this one. Even though I found the coffee flavor to be just a hair overpowering, I greatly enjoyed this beer. It's good cold, but if you drink it over a length of time (as I did), then the roastier elements seem to come out more as it warms. I'd drink more of these ... happily.
