In my mug, the beer was a gold color with a thick white head. There was a good amount of lace.
Average aroma: sweet malt, herbal. Not that noticeable.
Same with the taste, a little muted. Piney hops, some malt.
Medium-bodied. Pretty hoppy, not that balanced.
I think I'll drink some other APAs.

Poured from a bottle into a pint glass. Pours a beautiful clouded honey color, with a one finger off white head (displaying a light lacing). Initially smelling this brew produces a citrus and clean pine smell to it. Tastes of piney and citrusy grapefruit flavors well balanced with a slightly sweet malt flavor. A very hoppy flavor for an english pale ale as the bottle desribes. More along the line of a fine I.P.A. I truly enjoyed this fine brew as expected from Long trail. I will be enjoying this fine brew again in the near future.

On tap at drink poured into a pint glass.

Pours a nice cloudy golden amber with a really big fluffy white head. Very spicy and citrusy and refreshing nose.

Taste is really crisp and bitter without being over the top. It's very easy drinking, it just goes down like nothing. Very solid pale ale.

Reviewed from notes (11/25)

A: Pours a yellow/golden color with a smallish head with decent retention. Nice lacing down the sides though. Small carbonation bubbles being released to the surface.

S: Mostly some earth hops. Get a slight malt smell at the end.

T: Very nice subtle hop flavor, more on the floral side and slightly grassy. The malt at the end balances nicely with the hops.

M/D: Medium bodied, very smooth. Extremely easy to drink, overall a very nice effort from Long Trail here.

M- Great carbonation, perfect balance. Cannot improve.

12 oz bottle

App: great amber with a lasting cap and lacing

Smell: honey and caramel apple malt dominate. A touch of nondescript hop bite, perhaps some citrus and pine sap.

Taste: great, firm, chewy, biscuity malt. Ends with harsh, dry piney hops that over power the balance. I think cascade, but the super dry cascade with rough bitterness.

Medium body with slightly high carbonation. For English ales with their strong maltiness I prefer more subtle carbonation.

Long Trail Pale Ale
12 oz. bottle

Long Trail is so weird: the neck label for this beer reads "This classic English-style pale ale features a modest malt body and a well balanced citrus, pine hop aroma"... but how can that be a "classic English-style" - it's just not. There are definitely Cascade hops present in both the flavor and the aroma, lending their usual citrus and pineapple characteristics; and interestingly enough, it might be Long Trail's hoppiest regular beer. If, indeed, it is a regular beer as I'm not sure. I visited their website to get more information but it's not listed within their family of beers (although it's shown), nor is it listed on their home page as year-round, seasonal, brewaster, or specialty. Odd.

Moving forward, it's apparently unfiltered, which is great as it keeps it fresh and adds an extra component to the flavor. It's a little hazy, but the thick, sticky white head makes up for that, especially as it clings to the glass leaving rings and sheets of lace with each consecutive sip.

The aroma displays some yeast, but for the most part that's over-shadowed by the citrusy hops. I get grapefruit rind, a general kind of citrusy blend of orange, lemon and perhaps lime, a hint of papaya (which is probably the yeast blending in), and even some pineapple. It's clean, bright, pleasant, and welcoming.

Not surprisingly, the flavor follows suit with the addition of some floral hop character and a very straightforward and just lightly biscuity maltiness. It's a little fuller than some of the best known versions of the style (...also a little lighter than some others...) but it's perfectly balanced. You get the hops, the malt, the hops again, and then the bitterness. It's pretty solid at about 55 IBU's and it lingers dryly with a hint of biscuity malt, some floral and gently citrusy notes, and a delicate bit of chalkiness that's not unlike grapefruit rind.

The body is medium to medium-light, and it's got a median, crisp carbonation that softens to become even smoother as it warms a bit.

Overall it's quite impressive, and very nicely done. If it's not a year-round beer it should be, with the possible exception that maybe the market is so American pale ale laden (and dominated by bigger, hoppier beers) that it just can't fit in. If that's the case, what a shame. Absolutely worth trying!

pours a nice golden/copper color with a sweet aromatic spongy head...Lots of lacing from the head down the glass.

smells mostly forest pine with nice hints of sweetness and citrus..

mostly hop flavor with a very small but just enough maltyness to balance it out. bitter hops up front with a smooth buttery finish!.

thank you long trail for making another fantastic brew...this may easily become number one in their line. spread the word my friends!

I had a bottle with my dinner at the Wegman's cafe in Allentown. The best by date was mid-Feb 2010, so it should still be in good shape.

This beer was really more of an English pale - the label says so too. It had toffee and bready malts, herbal, spicy hops and then a kick of Ringwood candy flavor. All in all, not bad. But instead of the flavors layering and complimenting one another, they ran into and muddled each other up. Pretty good, not great.
