Deep rich black color. Super creamy, foamy rich beige head. Full head lasted down the glass, broke into brown clumps, but lasted. Dry stout roasted bitterness hits the nose. Coffee and bitter chocolate come to mind, but overall mellow bitterness. Rich, creamy full bodied. Very smooth and very flavorful. Another mellow roasted bitterness hits just as you finish. No real noticable hops, very balanced, and a very good stout. I would say it's the best made in the South.

Appearance - Dark brown, almost black with a very modest tan head that quickly disappears

Smell - Coffee and chocolate dominate the nose

Taste - Sweet and bitter chocolate balance with a dry, almost woody effect. Starts sweet, then turns bitter but the sweetness build up on the finish

Mouthfeel - A bit thin for the style; a bit of carbonation

Drinkability - Would prefer to see a bit more full bodied flavor but otherwise a nice effort

Pours a deep rupy with a creamy mocha head very appetizing to look at right off the bat, aroma is of dark roast coffee and chocolate ic cream.Taste has more of a milk chocolate taste than any stout I have ever had like a choclate milk shake almost with touch of dark roast coffee with a buttery finish.Wow this beer is rich tasting chocolaty and buttery the best brew from Dogwood I have had,I think a pretty unique stout.

Appearance: Dark, there is almost a hint of purple when it's held to the light. The tan head faded quickly, but left nice lacing on the glass.

Aroma: Bitter roastyness. Burned coffee, and dark chocolate, with notes of sour. Very roasted.

Taste: Sharp bitterness from the burned flavors, mellows on the tongue, but the finish remains bitter. The finish isn't quick, the dark chocolate bitterness lingers. The body is nice, not quite as full as I expected.

Notes: Very nice stout. Easy to drink, if you're a dark chocolate fan. The body seems a slight bit thin, but that's the only real detraction for me.

12 oz bottle

Appearance: Dark black w/ brown head that went fast and left little lacing

Aroma: Sweet malty notes, faint smokiness as well

Taste: Excellent, smoky and sweet, dark maltiness. Leaves a slight aftertast. Nicely done.

Mouthfeel: Smooth medium body. Carbonation is perfect.

Drinkability: A beer I could definitely drink more of. It didn't blow me away, but if I see it on tap I'll definitely have another. My first sampling from Dogwood leaves quite impressed.

deep black color, not a bit of lightness peeking through, big, raucous, roasty brown head..looking good!
Nose is rich with espresso tinges, cocoa edges, a roasty, toasty affair, a bit bittersweet, very sophisticated, very nice.
Smooth and well-rounded once it gathers in the mouth, very easy, with a little bitter coffeeish taste right on the side. I gulp again, and it once more goes down with ease. Body is full, flavor rich, and drinkability high, an one-the-money stout that belongs up there with the best of them. I had a Guinness Extra Stout earlier tonight and it felt so watery and over-carbonated. This is just right.

Much thanks to Rajenda and BiF7!

A great stout...black in colour, short crown leaving a nice glass ring and minor island lace.
Body is full.
Carbonation is short.
Aroma is non descript...maybe a hint of chocolate.
The taste is bitter/sweet thanks to the prominence of dark baker's chocolate. Bitter bitter bitter...sweet....did not see that coming.
Congratulations to the Dogwood Brewing Company.
Recomended.

Pours a black with very little head at all, leaves little lacing. Smells of roasted coffee, bitter choclate. Tastes of roasted malt choclate dominates with a light bitter coffe tastes that lingers no dout aided by the hops. My sample is way to thin in the mouth. No real carbonation present makes it taste like I was drinking a beer I left out last night. Drinability not good, not something I would not seek out again. This beer tastes like it could be better then it is just needs a little tweaking and more CO2.

I picked this guy up from Riverside Beverage in Chattanooga as part of a mixed six-pack. I enjoyed the IPA from Dogwood, so I have high hopes for the stout as well.

This beer pours out of the bottle a nice solid black color, impervious even to direct light. I had to pour it aggressively to get much of a head out of it but what does appear (finger and a half) is off white and sticky. Lacing clings lovingly to the glass and hangs out until it dries.

The smell is exquisite, mocha and roasted coffee beans are HEAVY on the nose. A slight vague fruitiness hangs around as well. The smell makes my mouth water.

As I swallow, the first thing I notice is that the mouthfeel is quite a bit thinner than I expected. Medium to medium-light almost. The taste is nice and sweet up front, roasty in the middle, with light pangs of bitterness towards the end. Very refreshing, and not dry in the least.

Not bad at all, a little lighter than I expected, but it almost pushes this one into session territory, A stout I wouldn’t mind having again.

Very dark, slight head that receded quickly. Black even held up to light. Mild aroma but definite roasted coffee element. Possibly some kind of fruit also. Nice thick mouthfeel. Definite coffee flavor, with a light aftertaste. Some bitterness in the aftertaste but very nice. Leaves a light lacing down the glass. Definitely a stout worth trying.

The beer poured black with ruby highlights. The head was tan and fell back quickly, but laced the glass.

The aroma was huge coffee and roasted grains with some smoke. In the background is chocolate.

The flavor was smooth with chocolate, coffee and smoke. Very complex array of flavors are presented with good bitterness backbone.

The finish was dry and just slightly bitter smoky. The body was medium to medium full.

I really enjoyed this beer. Well done!

12 ounce bottle. (Neck label poorly applied, bottom label extremely crooked.)

As dark as usual, this beer initially had the nice pour of a great stout, showing a big building head. Falls to not much, maybe some occasional spotty lace. Ends up being a little disappointing display for a stout.

It smelled of coffee, spices (?), dark malt, and dark chocolate. A little soft in effect overall. Tastes immediately like coffee with hop leaf and oil flavors, but with some dark malt behind it all. Has a soft roast flavor to it but made stronger by the hops, making things a little too snappy of a profile for me. Regardless, a straight ahead take on the style. Mouthfeel was thin and lacking carbonation.

Went will with some european chocolates, a decent dry stout just shy of being better in a couple ways. Again, thanks to aracauna for the bottle!

Pours dark brown in color with a thin beige head that soon fades into a collar of lace. Nose is dark coffee and roasted malts with some notes of chicory. Moderate to full in body with a rather smooth and creamy texture. Lots of bittersweet chocolate in the taste with some noticeable hop bitterness in the background and a bit of smoky charcoal. Finish is quite dry. A very enjoyable, if somewhat unremarkable, stout. Thanks to aracauna for the sample!

The beer poured out very dark brown opaque with brown rough head that did not last very long. The bouquet is clearly that of dark roasted barley with a hint of dark roasted coffee. The malt lends this beer a chewey character. The taste is dry malty with much less bitterness than other stouts. It almost tastes like a cross between a stout and a porter, but without the caramel sweetness that is typically present in most porters. The mouthfeel was oily and smooth. Great drinkability.

The most carbonated stout I've had as of yet. Poured with a huge soda like head that was formed from large bubbles. Has a smokey aroma with some notes of coffee. Feels a bit thin on the palate and highly carbonated like soda water. Flavor is a bit stale so this may be an old bottle. Bitter and dry with not much flavor.

Deep, dark brown (if not black) hue. Sparse, tiny, brunette bubbles construct a short-lived collar that disappear ultra fast… few specks of lace. The bouquet is pleasant, roasty chocolate and iced espresso. The nose is a touch weak and the invitation is a whisper. The body is thin (and a lack of carbonation doesn’t help)… it is slick and too easy to drink. The hops bitterness on the palate is excellent and unexpected… the roastedness is subdued, mild chalkiness with some chocolate hints. Pretty good. The aftertaste is roasted malts with coffee/hops bitterness… but the major flaw of this stout is the lack of sturdiness on the tongue, it is just too damn thin. Good enough, drinkable.

Nothing wrong with this stout, but one word pretty well summed it up for me: "average." Nice dark color and subdued aroma. Up front the flavor was almost coffee, but not quite - almost an artificial, instant coffee note. Mouthfeel was average. Finish sweetened up a bit, it almost wanted to be a sweet stout, but then dried up a bit at the end.

This brew poured a small head of brown bubbles of fine to medium size that left a good lacing and a slightly carbonated opaque black brown body. It has an excellent sweet chocolate malt aroma and a sweet coffee mild malt flavor. It went down very smoothly. This brew is very well done, nicely balanced and does not have a strong bite.

A very dark brown/black body reveals only a cusp of deep mahogany beneath its head when held to direct light. The creamy, dark tan cap holds fairly well before dropping to a standard collar; and leaves some attractive spotty lace throughout. Dark chocolate notes dance in the nose along with a swirl of mildly tart dark fruit and some very deeply roasted but thin coffee. The body is light/medium and its slick across the tongue with a velvety soft carbonation. The flavor is brash with acidity and "charred" roastiness from the dark malts, yet vibrant and lively due to it's light body. It appears almost fruity at first due to its acidity, then softens to reveal its deep roasted character with some minor baker's chocolate thrown in for good measure. It finishes dry and acidic with bitterness and dry, roasted character evolving in the aftertaste. Very much an Irish stout; and I'd love to try this one as a "nitro" beer. Most impressive!

Let me start off by saying that this is a very good stout! When poured, this beer had a small tan head with small bubbles that fully diminished. The lacing was fair on the sides of my glass. The body hue was black. The aroma was of strong coffee and chocolate, but the flavor was not as strong as the coffee aroma. This was a smooth drinking Stout that I really enjoyed.
