Pours black with brown notes, off white soapy tan head, some traces of lace. Smell is of coffee, roasted malt, chocolate both milk and bittersweet, raw cocoa like notes come off of this as well. Taste is of chocolate and coffee, bittersweet notes, some roast flavours linger in the finish and aftertaste. Mouthfeel is very watery, light weight and barley carbonated. This would be much better if it had a little more body and weight, if it was a little thicker this would have been far better. Still reasonably enjoyable though.

sampled on cask at Volo as part of their Black Sunday festival feb 14/2010.

pours nearly black and opaque with a dense dark brown head. the head drops very slowly and leaves lots of thick chunky lace as it falls.

aroma is good. lots of fresh brewed coffee. dark and a bit of milk chocolate. anise. caramel. toasted multi-grain bread and biscuit. cracker. earthy. bit herbal. maybe a touch of light citrus hiding in the background?

taste is great. orange and grapefruit citrus. big fresh brewed coffee. dark and milk chocolate. anise. toasted multi-grain bread and biscuit. light cracker. herbal and earthy. medium bitterness level, lent by a nice mix of citrusy hops, coffee, and chocolate.

mouthfeel is great. silky smooth medium-large body. nice medium-low very fine carbonation level.

drinkability is great. i've had this one a few times now, and this is the best of the bunch. great balance of the added components. great balance and depth overall. works awesome on cask too. top notch!

Volo Cask Days 2009

Pours a jet black with a lightly toasted tan head.

The aroma is of strong espresso, roasted malts, a touch of sweetness. A little herbal touch as well.

This is dry, bitter, dark chocolate / cocoa dipped in really strong coffee. A touch of sweetener, to balance out the espresso punch.

This is think and creamy. a great mouthful. This does indeed do the trick as a breakfast drink.

I could drink this a lot.

Great work.

On cask at Volo Cask Days 2009.

Pours a dark and opaque brown, almost black, thin light brown head forms, settles to a thin ring, no real lacing.

Smell is quite nice, very malty, caramel, chocolate, nice coffee roast, some dark fruit, oats, licorice, biscuits, coffee is well done.

Taste is similar, reminds me a bit of a toned down Peche Mortel, nice heavy espresso roast and chocolate, caramel, good malty middle, dark fruit and licorice, nice roasty finish with some oaty smoothness.

Mouthfeel is medium bodied with low carbonation, definitely drinkable. This would be a good breakfast drink. Nice work Johnny.

2009 Volo Cask Days. Clear winner of the fest to me. Thick mouthfeel, a lot of coffee. Almost an imperial stout, with clear coffee roast nose, black colour without much head. Cocoa is in the secondary. Satisfying. I am not a coffee drinker, however this worked for what it is.
Its three months later, and the title is again on cask at Volo Valentine's Day casks. A decent stout todya, but not the thickness of body nor the richness of taste. Coffee is again higlighted rather than chocolate.

A: Black with a tan head, not much retention from the cask pour.

S: Coffee, roasted nuts, pumpernickel... intriguing.

T: The coffee is really upfront, I was initially a little shocked by the flavour! Some roasted nut, cocao & hints of molasses. Good bitterness.

M: I expected a little more oatmeal smoothness in a breakfast stout, but this one has some roasted acidity (from the coffee kick). Well-attenuated with an off-dry finish.

D: A good drinker.

Half-pint on cask at Volo Cask Days - should have gone back for more! Pours a jet black with a finger of mocha head.

Nose is not overwhelming but full of coffee grinds, bitter chocolate and roasted malts. Perfect for 11am - which it is.

Full flavor - coffee grinds, dark bitter chocolate, cocoa powder all coming through on top of the nicely roasted malts - leaves a nice dry, mild bitter hop finish. Balanced and extremely drinkable. Medium body, beautiful on cask. Coffee is forefront but as you delve into this one the bitter chocolate and cocoa come out to play and it is bang on. Only complaint is a slight astringency that hides in the corners, hard to pin down what it is.

I would wish this beer upon anyone. For sure the best local coffee stout and I hope to have the pleasure to have it again.

This beer first turned up at the Fort York festival, and was brewed by John at Great Lakes. I didn't get to try it until the beer was past its prime, and it struck me as a good effort but in need of a little oomph. The good news is, John collaborate with Jon at Cameron's to refine the recipe, and these two boozebags have created a winner.

Pours extremely dark brown, bordering on midnight black, with a finger of tan head. I was serving this beer all night and its a beauty to pour. Aroma of coffee, cocoa, and mildly bitter hops. Good roasted coffee taste hits you off the bat, swiftly followed by a strong hit of bittersweet chocolate and a leafy finish. Touched of treacle and oat add a deeper complexity. The oat also helps to bulk up the body and make this a very satisfying drinker.

Kudos, guys, kudos.
