A 500ml bottle with a BB of April 2013. Described on the label as a naturally wheat-free ale that is suitable for people who are gluten intolerant (gluten less than 20ppm). Ingredients include lager malt and maize.

Poured into a tulip pint glass. A clear, pale golden hue with medium carbonation. Forms a small head of white foam that disappears swiftly. Aroma of light malt with aromatic hops; subtle notes of citrus and noble hops can be discerned. Slightly sweet, with a whiff of diacetyl lurking in the background.

Tastes of light malt with aromatic hops and a crisp, dry finish. Notes of citrus, stewed hops and faint ale yeast. Has a slight noble hop character, almost like a decent lager. Restrained bitterness upon swallowing, and a hint of buttery diacetyl in the background. Mouthfeel is light, but dry and tingly. Somewhat astringent. Aftertaste of bitter aromatic hops.

Pretty good - to date this is probably the best gluten-free beer I've tried. The malt is light (unsurprisingly), but the aromatic hop character is pleasant and the bitterness well judged. The body also suits the style. Almost like a lager in character, though the ale yeast makes itself known. The only flaw is the presence of diacetyl, which overpowers some of the subtler flavour components. I'm not sure if the brewer does any kind of special processing to remove the gluten, but the beer doesn't seem to be unduly affected by the method used. If gluten-free is your thing, then this is recommended drinking.

500ml bottle. Best (and maybe only) gluten-free beer pun name yet. Memories of Bad Religion concerts in the 90's...sigh.

This beer pours a crystal clear, pale golden yellow colour, with one anemic finger of foamy, bubbly, and fizzy dirty white head, which hies it out of existence in no time flat, leaving some sparse microbial lace around the glass after the fact.

It smells of lightly bready, and crackery pale malt - a wee bit of citrus, some apple juice, and subtle ashy, earthy hops. The taste is grainy (so, actually pro-, then, heh), somewhat biscuity malt, a hint of toastiness, very subtle gritty corn notes, further ethereal citrus tartness, and with the same earthy, ashy, and now weedy hops, agreeable in their understated, but at least noticeable, bitterness.

The carbonation is moderate, with a mild bite to it, the body medium-light in weight, and plainly smooth, a minor flintiness edging its way in. It finishes flatly grainy (there it is again!), the toasted biscuit character on a slight upswing, and the nice bittering noble hops ceding no ground.

If you handed me this, and proffered no additional information about it, I would have to describe it as an above-average old-world pale ale, a tad weak in the malt, maybe, but generally well balanced and tasty. Now tell me that it's gluten-free - swuhhh? Compared to all the other offerings out there for this diet-based sub-category, Against the Grain has no peer. Celiac imbibers with working taste buds, rejoice!

L - Pale yellow. Hazy. No head.
S - Light pale malt. Bread, corn.
T - Sweet and corny. Watery and crisp. A little earthy bitterness in the end.
O - Drinkable, but not exactly tasty.

500ml Bottle conditioned: BBD 1 Nov 2013. Poured slowly into a UK pint sleeve on 1 Jul 2013 at home with the new puppy.

No sediment appeared to leave the bottle: bright and light golden colour, very pale actually. On top a full and fairly deep foam white covering. Plenty of carbonisation bubbles rising through the clear body.

The nose is mild malts and a un-malt-like sweetness from something, fruity esters too. Oddly enough it also had a grainy aroma despite it's name.

Strange taste: candid fruit peel sort of taste but not as sweet, watery body feel and a metallic twang to the aftertaste. Can't say I really enjoyed it.

Poured from a 12oz bottle into a US tumbler pint glass.

A: The beer is a light gold color, with a thin white head that fades quickly and leaves a thin lace on the glass.

S: The aroma contains citrus, light caramelized malts and a touch of hops.

T: The taste starts out with strong but not overly sweet flavors of citrus and honey. Then a little bit of breadiness comes in from a thin malt character. The hops presence is good for the style and brings some balance. The after-taste is slightly sweet.

M: Very crisp and a little smooth, light-to-medium body, medium carbonation, finish is slightly sticky.

O: Tasty, goes down easily, not too filling, very mild kick, decent representation of style, it’s a solid beer but there are other choices in the style that I would pick first.
