Fresno is one of those places that offers nothing to the beer fan. Whole Foods at least tries to. A small collection of primarily popular and readily available California brews and a few imports are all that are offered here. Considering the zero availability of beer bars and the rather poor showing of the two brewpubs in the area, this is all the discerning visitor can hope for. Nice store (as they all are), but nothing to get all emotional about. I rated service 2.5 since none was offered and everything else average though WF is only marginally average.

A pretty good place. Coming from MN I'm always amazed you can get liquor in what we would consider grocery stores in MN. They have a really large amount of single bottles and a good amount of sixers. I went in here specifically looking for DFH WWS and they had a full rack of them so I was happy. There's not a ton of beer here but if you live close there's definitely enough to keep you happy. The Belgian selection though is laughable. So many people, especially new school craft beer people, think US makes the best beer. Umm, no. There's a reason that Belgium, specifically some Trappist and Abbeys, have been making beer longer than the US has been a country. Yeah, some place is going to make a crap beer and people will buy it for 400 years. GTFO. Idiots.

Cruised in here for the first time today because I was in the area. Beer was located in an open cooler in the back right portion of the store.
Quality: Everything was in an open cooler and looked to be pretty fresh. Also, the entire selection (though small) was pretty high quality. Everything was really clean adn well presented.
Service: I got asked if I needed any help with the beer a few times, but I replied it wasn't necessary. The selection is pretty small and easy to navigate. Nothing else to be said here.
EDIT (12-28-2009): Staff is very friendly and helped get info on a number of food items I was looking for. I didn't ask any questions about beer.
Selection: I have to admit, I was mildly impressed with the beers they had. Tons of North Coast stuff, including Cru d' Or and Old Plowshare which are produced specifically for Whole Foods. Also saw a lot of Stone, a lot of New Belgium, Firestone-Walker, and a pretty good smattering of other California micros. There were a ton of farmhouse ales and saisons too, especially from Brasserie DuPont and Brouwerij Boon. A couple Chouffes as well. The selection seemed to be concentrated on organic ales and Belgian saisons. Lastly, I saw some bombers of Cluster Fuggle, the only bottled beer from Full Circle, which warmed my heart.
EDIT (12-28-2009): I went in today and found fresh Pliny and Blind Pig! So cool! This is probably the only spot in Fresno where you can find these beers.
I'll probably return to get some Cru d' Or, Plowshare, or Lobotomy Bock, but I'll never go out of my way for this place.
EDIT (12-28-2009): ...until now! I'll definitely be coming here to get my Blind Pig and Pliny!

This is on my regular "trollings". It's kind-of on the other side of town for me, but I'll check it out periodically.
They often surprise me. I will go with expectations, and memories from the last visit. Then all of a sudden they'll have "Butte Creek Organic Revolution X Imperial IPA" or some other Double IPA, or a strong ale or Barley Wine.
They usually have a pretty good contingent of Stone's latest offerings. Quite a few Belgians. Most of Sierra Nevada's "standards", plus a seasonal.
Well worth the trip, and while the food is a little expensive, the beer is more or less "regular" priced.
The food is pretty good, and their custom made sandwich or pizza is a nice take home for the refrigerated beer.
All their beer is usually refrigerated!

I have visited Whole Foods Market on numerous occasions solely due to their excellent varieties of beer. I also happen to have the pleasure of doing a lot of independant contracting work at Whole Foods so I will personally credit Beerski on his accurate review.
Very respectable selection, Belgians, various west coast microbrews, numerous bottle conditioned... nicely organized display case, superb customer service/satisfaction.
Another thing worthy of mentioning is that WFM continually rotates stock, and surprises me every new season with something unfamiliar, new, or rare.
