Bought my first brewing kit here, and some additional equipment such as a second glass carboy, funnels, and a scale. Found my first brewing literature here as well (How to Brew, etc.).

The guy I spoke to was extremely helpful and knowledgeable of not only brewing technique, but also the history of the industry and some of the variables affecting price (such as the hop shortage conspiracy of '07). He didn't try to sell me things I didn't need and even pointed me towards cheaper alternatives of the equipment I was planning to purchase.

That said, everything I found here I could find cheaper and in better variety online. I don't think that is atypical in this day and age.

I haven't been there in a couple months, mainly because I quickly outgrew using kits and moved to all grain.

Overall, this is a great place to start, but it won't support the serious home brewer for very long.

I was wondering what happened to Brew and Grow. I had been going to their store in Fridley for a long time, and then I took a break making my own homebrew. I found that they moved to Spring Lake Park. I was pleasantly surprised when I stopped by. The store is so much bigger, and it is laid out really nice. One side has the brewing stuff and the other side has growing stuff, somewhat like the old store, but on a much bigger scale. They had a large selection of beer kits, wyeast, hops, and malts. I wanted to make a beer similar to Summit and they did some research for me and came up with a recipe.

I'd have to say that my shopping experience with them was really good. Their prices were very reasonable and they had everything I needed. I spent about 15 minutes bullshitting with the owner, solving the world's problems. He is still there every day -- I can't believe it.
