What’s the name of the cheap rose wine that comes in the box??? Franzia? I remember that I once drank five liters of it with my friends on New Years when we were 11 or so and we all spent the rest of the night puking into the sink, toilet and bathtub. I remember the taste well. This beer looks, smells, and tastes just like that. It is an ungly pink-purple. It’s thin and sticky. It smells of blue berries and blue cheese. It’s much more like a wine than a beer. It’s almost completely flat and very sweet. A subtle amount of carbonation hits the back of the tongue. On the plus side, the cork makes an excellent POP when it goes off.

P - The ingredients listed on the bottle are water, malt, hops, and myrtle from the Ardeche. The myrtle is 6%.

A - poured 33cl bottle into an oversized wine glass. Small white head dissipates quickly, leaves some lacing. The liquid is a beautiful cherry or sangria color.

S - Very artificial. I only smell red candy or cherry syrup. It smells like soda.

T - Amazingly, it doesn't taste like soda, or have a candy-like sweetness. I taste hibiscus and dark cherry. There's sort of a herbal / natural fruit flavor that I can't put my finger on, presumably myrtle berries. There is a very light hop bitterness underlying the fruit taste, but it does not get in the way. The finish is herbal, fairly clean.

M - Medium body for a light ale, light carbonation. There is a little bit of pucker in the aftertaste, but not with the sour characteristics of a lambic.

D - I was pleasantly impressed by this beer. It's one of the best non-lambic fruit beers that I've tried. It has a nice fruit taste, but isn't sweet. For the style, it's a quality beer.

Murky magenta-purple with film that leaves faint rings. Blueberry syrup nose.
Wheaty smoothness and sling berry tang to end. Light, crisp and no cling.

According to the commercial description, this uses a lager base, and it's actually bilberries, not blueberries. If you're inclined to be a bit more forgiving for those...

Still not a good beer. Can a fruit beer also be thin and insubstantial? Errs on the side of bland, which leaves it a dumb drinkable boring summer beer.

I will go to many lengths for a blueberry beer. Including dragging a beer back from France.

Pours a clouded brown with pink hues. Head carries the same color. Nose is like blueberry juice. I guess that is okay. Flavor is atrocious. Chalky. Like a blueberry muffin. But not good. Ack. I don't even want to take a second sip, and I'm not going to. Okay. Maybe once more just for research sake. Really. I am gagging here. Avoid.

Beer bottle (33cl.), tasted in 2002.
Bourganel brewery using traditional products of Ardeche, chestnuts and blueberries with beer tasting fruit.

Apperance : brown color, with white foam head.
Smell : blueberries aromas.
Taste and mouthfeel : malty, the strong taste of blueberries and then still dominates. This beer is well marked on the fruit.
Drinkability : an average beer in the style Belgian ale (drink fresh).
