Served at Delerium Cafe, Brussels, Belgium on 3/21/2010. The bartender there explained that this beer is made with the same plants used to make Chartreuse liqueur, which gives this beer its strange color, aroma and flavor.
A- Poured from the tap with a frothy white head, which quickly evaporated, leaving small bits of lacing behind. The body was a clear filtered GREEN color... a mildly carbonated grass-green color. Crazy. I asked the bartender if he added woodruff syrup to it, but he said it was the natural color from the plants it is made with.
S- Strange aromas similar to Chartreuse and/or Absinthe. Medicinal, a little sweet, licorice-like, a bit like macerated plants as well. Does not smell like any other beer I've had before... very strange and interesting. At first, I didn't care for the aroma, but I ultimately became accustomed to it.
T- Bitterness dominates the palate. Not hop bitterness. Again, a bit like the bitterness of Chartreuse or Absinthe, mildly akin to licorice, quinine and/or plant matter. Fascinating. There's no identifiable malt or hop quality to this beer. Finishes mildly. Didn't like it at all with the first sip, but it started to grow on me with time...
M- Thin body... watery... moderate carbonation. Not impressive at all in the mouthfeel department.
D- One and done. Definitely worth trying, just to have something radically different than the norm... but I could never consider a second glass in a row... and I can see many people turning away from this beer after one or two sips...
