Henry's is in the middle of downtown Portland; my friends and I had already visited Horse Brass and Concordia when we decided to look for Henry's. It was dumb luck that we managed to find it.

So, this "tavern" has one tremendous thing going for it and one major drawback. The draught beer selection is amazing. Truly, mind-bogglingly ridiculous. They have over 100 taps, the vast vast majority of which are dedicated to top-notch craftbrews from the Northwest and NoCal. I had a Willamette Espresso Stout and a Stone RIS when I visited, and I could have kept drinking from that list for several weeks without stopping or getting bored.

The drawback: this is a yuppie's bar. A nice restaurant with excellent food (that can be had on the cheap during their PM happy hour), this draws the power crowd from Portland. It's like having a great beer bar in a five-star, two-hundred-dollars-a-plate steakhouse, so it gets crowded quick with a crowd atypical for a beer bar. In some ways, this makes Henry's that much more of an adventure--who doesn't like people-watching after all? But, it's also about as far from community and pub ambience as you get. If you love craft beer and this type of scene, welcome to hog heaven.

As for me I'll go to Henry's, enjoy the beer, love the options. enjoy the food, and forgive the atmosphere.

I get it. There’s 100 taps. About 40% of them are crap, though. Food and overall prices are a bit high in comparison to the rest of the city. Henry Weinhard’s is an institution. Unfortunately, it’s not even brewed Portland anymore. It’s brewed in Texas. And Henry’s beer sucks anyways.

If you avoid the Henry’s beer you’ll be ok. They have a lot of unique and cool offerings. They had a Boneyard on draft, for example.

Spend your time and liver capacity at other places when visiting Portland.

It's not often that you sit down and the server hands you a large menu and you notice that both front and back lists nothing but BEER! Over 100 on tap! Located in the old Henry Weinhard's brewery the atmosphere is hip and there is a cool outdoor deck where we sat. Servers are knowledgeable and friendly. Too may beers and so little time!
