This brew throws a generous half-inch head that just doesn't give way. Waimea's IPA is much darker than most, almost an iced tea brown, but that nose lets you know that this is indeed a hop bomb.
As my tongue is coated in resiny hop oils, I think about how the native Hawaiians considered British explorer/navigator Captain James Cook to be a reincarnation of the god Lono before they wised up and killed him.* The current residents of Waimea sacrifice 15 pounds of hops to make a batch of this beer, an appropriate offering if there ever was one. At 67 IBUs, this is an elixir fit for a god and a perfect closer to a fine afternoon drinking beers and watching the Pacific Ocean for Lono's return.
* I don't claim to know anything about Hawaiian history that I haven't read out of hiking books, surf brochures, and/or beer menus, so I may be way off here. E kala mai ia'u!

Golden orange, some head, minimal lacing.
Smells of lush tropical fruit, grapefruit and pineapple predominate.
Hopslamesque. Big grapefruit flavor, definitely pineapple, orange rind, pine, a bready note, and a floral somewhat grassy note in the finish.
Crisp mouthfeel, medium carbonation.
Darn good beer here.

Appearance is a bright copper, clarity is pretty high making this beer look very appealing.
Smell hinted at being a bigger IPA than it really was but very smooth citrus balanced with a toasty hint.
Taste is mellow after the smell, giving it a good drinkability. For those that love IPA's this is one worth trying. Not going to find a better IPA on the island.
Mouthfeel is what you would expect from a big IPA

On draught at the pub. Hazy dark gold with a fluffy head leaving nice lace.
Smell is huge, fresh resinous hops. I was told this was freshly brewed and just tapped the night before, and you could tell. Very aggressive west coast style hopping, more pine then citrus. Very impressive.
Taste was more of the same. Massive hop flavor, really one of the better IPAs I've had, which says a lot considering I live in NW. Reminded me a lot of HUBs IPA, but with less alcohol, it's more impressive. Nice maltiness, but all you can taste is the hops.
Mouthfeel is on the chewy side, with almost sticky hop oils. Medium to medium heavy body.
Drinkability was great. Sat on their back porch overlooking the garden out towards the ocean and was in heaven. The wife didn't give me time to linger, but I could have sat there drinking those all night long.

On tap at the Waimea Brewing Co in Kaua'i. Did a flight of all their beers.
Appearance: nice light amber color.
Smell: smells of strong floral hops from the nose.
Taste: delicious hop flavor, sticking right with what I smelt. at 5.8 ABV this one drinks nicely. 15LBs of hops for 150 gallons of beer.
Mouthfeel: drinks nicely. not to bitter or clingy.
Drinkability: would definitely have this one again IF on the other side of the world again. Not sure if they bottle and ship.
