A: Clear golden beer producing a thin white head with mild lacing. Poured from a lovely 500 ml flip-top bottle at a Christmas market in Munich.
S: Grain, cereal, corn and a hint of sweet.
T: Sweet grain and light malt backbone.
M: Light bodied with moderate carbonation.
O: Enjoyable Helles that is worth trying even if I never have to seek it out again.

Thanks to bu11zeye for sharing this bottle.
The beer pours a clear gold color with a white head. The aroma is light malt, grain and some grassy hops. The flavor is very similar, with some grassy hops, bready malt and a touch of hop bitterness. Medium mouthfeel and medium carbonation. A nice Helles lager.

A: Pours a bright, clear golden color. The tall, white head has a dense, foamy-frothy texture. Retention is good, with soapy, sudsy lacing clinging to the glass.
S: Grassy, herbal aromas are most noticeable. A faint lemony note, along with some maltiness.
T: Grainy and grassy up front, with mild sweetness. A clean, spicy/herbal hop bite provides a good balance. A light lemon note as well.
M: Medium-full body. Carbonation is slightly on the soft side. A bit creamy. Somewhat dry into the finish.
D: Straight from Munich. A clean, pleasant Helles lager. Firmly malty, with a nice spicy hop balance. Went very well with a bratwurst dinner.

This brew pours quite nicely, and produces a decent two finger thick head. The body is ultra clear and is a beautiful gold color.
Aromas are lemony from what I perceive as Hallertau Hops. If you've ever had a SA Imperial Hallertau Pilsner, you know what I mean. There is also a grainy and hay character too.
Urtyp is well balanced. Upfront is the light smack of the hops, but is overcome by sweet cereal like nuances.
This feels very crisp, but not overly clean. This is a great session beer.

I drank this from a 500ml flip-top bottle, conserved for about 1 month in the fridge.
Appearance: Gold color with non-bright, white head; thin but persistent.
Flavor: Delicate, slightly hoppy / bitter flavor.
Taste: Very smooth, refreshing and delicate taste, slightly malty, touches of fizziness as it goes down the throat. Medium body.
Drinkability: Very, very drinkable. These were some of the fastest 500ml I've ever drunk. I was already missing it while gulping down the last mouthful.

I searched the Löwenbräu website, but couldn't find anything about the style of beer so I went with my best guess. There are a bunch of references to the swing top bottle and new beer crate, but nothing about the exact style. I'm pretty sure Urtyp means old, or original, type. Ok, enough of the boring stuff.
0.5 liter swing top bottle with blue and gold label. Poured a small foamy bright white head. Strong aroma of spicy noble hops that is almost pungeant with a lightly sweat malt. Bright golden wheat colored beer with streams of bubbles rising briskly around the edges. Flavor is fairly sweet and right between crisp and cloying. Pungeant hops come in midway and never become as potent as the aroma suggests. Lightlz fizzy mouthfeel with a moderately light body. Tastes like a decent helles.

Pours brilliant clear pale golden with large and rather dense head, no lacing. Aroma is slightly spicy citrus hops with mild malt.
Taste is sweet honey malt very well balanced with peppery hops that last well into the aftertaste. Mouthfeel seems to be light-medium with good fizzy carbonation.
Overall, a pleasant Helles.

Sampled at the Ratskeller Restuarant im Marienplatz
50cl serving in a lowenbrau Ratskeller branded tumbler.
a - Average helles, golden in colour, 2 finger soapy rocky head that disappates quickly, lacing is minimal.
s- skunky, stale hops and malt, not a good start.
T - Just as good as the smell, finishes very watery indeed.
M - High carbonation, but overall watery and unpleasant.
D- Could drink half then had to leave it, a horrible example of a helles. Never been impressed with lowenbrau anyways, but i thought vom fass, i would get a better example. Sadly not to be.
Stale and rotten - no doubt a bad serving, but i shall not revisit due to lack of potential or character!

After seeing this beer for sale at the Munich Weinnachtsmarkt next to the Gluhwein, which I find a bit odd(bock anyone?), went to the store to investigate myself.
Bugelverschlussflache(bottle-top) opens with with a loud pop, then pours out a clean pale golden hay color, capped by a light, foamy head, highly active and bubbling. looks delicious.
Smells ver clean. Light Pils malt, bit of musty hay, light Hallertau, minerally water, citrus, finishes with a light bite of bitter hops. Simple, yet full in aromatics wit the simple raw ingredients.
Flavor to match, light subdued, relativley low carbonation, finishes a bit sweet with a light biscuity maltiness cut by hops. I must admit, even for a simplly crafted brew, this one is a bit lacking in the flavor department. Stellar examples, such as Andechs Spezial, or Augustiner finish with a really lively carbonation and hoppy bitterness, LOwen's offering is a little-undercarbonated, sweet, and pretty one-note. I can see the lightness and citrus quality in the brew as a cleansing drink after the rich Christmas foods at the Market. I think I will contine exploring the Helles market.

I had a 0.5L bottle of this last night in my hotel bar in Munich, poured into a Lowenbrau Urtyp glass. I found the beer to be good overall for a Helles lager, more thick and flavorful than some of the others I've tried while in Munich.
The appearance was normal for the style, crystal clear straw color with a white foamy poof, some lacing on the glass. The aroma was mostly malty, with a hops note that I haven't seen in other Helles I've tried. The flavor was malty and with mouthfeel was unexpectedly thick, leading to a nice coating of flavor on the tongue. Very nice for the style and a little unexpected.

I get this beer every time im in Bayern. Ive only had it from a swing top bottle. I had it both cold and warm, morning and at night; good helles. IMO a step above the lowenbrau original.
Its definitely worth the try, but I havent found it in the states yet.

On-tap in Munich at a nifty outdoor cafe. Served in a Löwenbräu Stange.
A: Gold with great clarity and mild carbonation. A soapy white head has OK retention and leaves behind some lace.
S: Grass, lemon and a bit of sweet malt. Not overly complex, but still quite pleasant.
T: Well balanced. Sweet honey like malt in front is followed by a mild pepper and lemon bitterness. Finishes crisp and clean.
M: Medium-light body with the right amount of fizz.
D: A nice beer for a pleasant evening outdoors. A big cut above the Löwenbräu I've had in the states. It's light, easy to drink and paired well with the light meal I had it with.

This beer poured a clear gold with a nice head and a good stream of carbonation. The Aroma was slightly earthy with mild citrus notes. The taste was light and sweet with a bit of hop bite at the end and a dry finish. The mouthfeel was also pretty light with a prefect level of carbonation. Overall, more than a few of these could easily be enjoyed in a session.

This was bought in Munich at a grocery store where it had not been kept cool & therefore was not directly in skunk-inducing fluorescent light. It had a full malty aroma and more malt flavor that the other Helles I'd had here. It seemed more like the style as it had been described to me and was more flavorful that the others I've reviewed recently. Good beer.

.5L swing-top, best before 8/31/11.
Clear, effervescent gold. Big, frothy head, good retention, bits of lacing here and there.
The aroma is at first very clean and grainy-sweet, but then develops an undesirable, lightly metallic character.
Flavor needs work. Grainy, cracker-like malts are there, but so is the metallic character, especially on the finish. The hops are fine, and perhaps above-average for the style, but the tangy, tongue-to-battery flavor just ruins it. The mouthfeel has medium-high carbonation and a nice bounce to it.
Not a very good lager. Too metallic. Drain pour? Maybe.
