Pours very dark amber, tiny head, sticky lacing.
Pretty weak smell, some dark malts, faint caramel and a generic dark fruity sweetness.
Taste is also pretty straightforward. Toasted malts with faint caramel, dark bread crust, hint of nuts. Muddled dry dark fruit, mostly raisin, some berries, red apple and some citrus zest. Spicy feel, with some funky herbs to it, refreshing. Alcohol has a faint medicinal hint, stronger as the beer warms. Mildly bitter finish.
Medium carbonation and body, more watery than other doppelbocks. Aftertaste of fruity sweetness and alcohol (which gets a bit disturbing).
Not a great doppelbock, but a decent one at least. Plenty more better out there tho.

A - A beautiful dark chocolate color, quite consistent. Eggshell colored foam, two fingers, slightly less.

S - a slight hint of caramel with mostly a wheat smell, yet sweat in a very traditional doppelbock way. Not a strong odor.

T - Enjoyable with a slightly more verbose hint of hops in the mid section of the beer. The initial sip and finish are predominantly malty with a strong overtone of caramel.

M - Due to it being a dunkel, the beer is a little heavier than a lot of doppelbocks. Smooth; one can feel the sugars in the slight stickiness of the residue

O - this is a good beer; probably better than I'm giving credit. The highlight is the presence of a nice bitter hops taste accenting the strong caramel overtones. A middle-of-the-road doppelbock which is very traditional.

Beer bottle (50 cl.) purchased from Bières & Chopes, and tasted in 2014.

Appearance : red brown color, with tan foamy head and nice lacing.
Smell : rich roasted malt aromas.
Taste & mouthfeel : fruity and roasted flavors with a warming alcohol finish (better in winter).
Drinkability : a good beer in the style Doppel Bock.

50cl Bottle: best before the end of Dec 2012, poured @ home into a 'Back Forty Beer Co' badged US pint glass on 23 Nov 2012, it didn't all fit in one pour!

Looks good: mahogany with a red hue, on top a blanket of biege foam.

Sweet malty molasses hit the nose straight away: treacle, toffee and caramel in no particular order fill your senses with pleasure. This is going to be one sweet malty brew and you'll know that before the beer gets anywhere near your mouth.

The rich almost creamy body is all about those malts: luckily they aren't so sickly as the aroma suggested, fruitier and nuttier than full in your face sweetness. Still plenty of those molasses around but they are subdued by the hops and alcohol contents enough to stop them completely taking over and as the beer warms a little the beers true flavours begin to appear. Dark berries, raisins, chocolate, ground coffee beans and Dundee Cake.

Complex, interesting and alcoholic: three of my favourite beer characteristics.

Chocolate brown that goes oxblood in light with lumpy beige froth that
holds.
Straight up malt syrup nose with dark German bread, molasses and a bit of
overripe banana.
Treacle, black cherry, chocolate cake and cola with winter spice hops.
Fig ending and tightening minty linger. Light to medium, chewy, slight
fizz.

Roasty over fruity, burn not especially well hidden and maybe a bit thin. A
MOR doppelbock - not big and syrupy but not lean and tart. Nothing wrong
with it but I can't see chasing it down again.
