Served in a shaker pint glass at the Madison brewpub.

Another entry in my pre-interview extravaganza. It pours a clear, very pale straw topped by around a finger of white micro-foam. The nose comprises light wheat, dewy grass, and flowers. The taste is very similar, but bolder and with the addition of light lemon and some slightly funky rice. The body is light, with a light carbonation, a wet feel, and a crisp finish. Overall, a nice, light brew for such a "crazy city" as Madison.

Great Dane Verrückte Stadt German Pils

Got a 64 ounce branded growler of this not 24 hours old as a gift.

Pours into my stange with a nice fluffy white three finger head. It sticks around for awhile before leaving some very nice lacing behind. This beer is pale pale gold, and very clear and bright. This is perhaps the clearest most filtered looking beer I've ever seen. It looks like a stalwart German pilsener.

The scent is very grassy and floral, more american pilsener style. There is also some malt.

Taste is very American styled pilsener. It is bursting with malt sour lemon fruitiness and some grassy spice. Like most American pilseners it is totally unrefined in taste compared to its European counterparts with some diacetyl. This one is very light on taste, would make a good summertime quencher as it goes down extremely easy though its not that much of a pleasure to down.

The mouthfeel is smooth, with some wateriness and a nice balance of carbonation.

Overall its a malt bomb of a pils with that typical American, go-over-the-recipe-once-then-brew-it scheme.

Downed a quick sample at Dane Co. airport in Madison. Side by side with their Peck's pilsener, the Verruckte is blonder, lighter and more sessionable. Would like to spend some more time with this beer, if in the area for a while.

Every airport should feature their city's brew like Dane Co. does--what a great concept.

On-tap at the Madison Airport.

A: Clear yellow, fluffy white head, little retention, good lace.

S: Floral, spicy, grassy & slightly herbal hops; toffee from the malt.

T: Floral, spicy, grassy & slight mineral flavour, light breadyness, modest bitterness. The brewer intended this to be lighter than their czech pils, which is too bad, I love the flavours here... there just isn't quite enough.

M: Light to moderate body, moderate carbonation, smooth.

D: Very drinkable.

Appearance: Clear, light golden body beneath a creamy head of white. The nice initial ring of craggy lace is reduced with each subsequent sip.

Aroma: Malty, grassy nose. Subtly floral.

Flavor: Malty... straightforward and somewhat straw-like with grassy and floral hops lending it character. Moderate bitterness. Underlying fruitiness. Finishes dry with some residual, lightly sticky malt.

Mouthfeel: Standard. Medium to medium-light bodied. Gently crisp.

Drinkability: A decent enough lager that's not quite as brisk as a German Pilsner in bitterness and carbonation level. Could be slightly cleaner.

On-tap at the brewpub: A lighter medium shade of hay. Clear bodied. Frothy white foam of medium size dawns the top well and lasts for good length. Laces the glass in all kinds of spotty sheeting.

Aroma is well spiced with that certain German hopped spice, some partial dried floralness slimmed with grass and bready yeast.

Taste doesn't disappoint; solid, crisp, broad flavors of dried bread, zippy German hop spice of dry grasses and herbs, yet stays thirsty and wet with a tender backing of doughy bread malt. Lasting, tender finish with some of the spicy hops.

Firm, medium body for a Pilsner. Very well done. Crisp, eager, with a fun balance of hoppy spice, bready malt; dryness and quick fullness. The dryness is immaculately placed along a very foregiving wet play of slick smoothness. A solid Pils. Sessionable by the growler and then some.

Pint poured at the Great Dane's downtown location. Verucktestadt Pils pours out a clear yellow color with no head. The aroma is lemony with some flowery notes. The flavor is quite unlike the aroma. The flavor is bready malt with hints of grassy hops. The flavor is mainly malty, with the hops playing the supporting role. Medium mouthfeel. Drinkability is good. This beer would make a fine session. Overall, a decent pils, but I prefer the Dane's Peck Pils.
