The Black Moravian is back, although this time they're calling it simply "Schwartzbier."

Once again, the Dane has perfected the appearance of this brew. It is jet black and absolutely beautiful. The huge roasted espresso aromas are present and exploding in a way that I haven't seen too often in such a light and drinkable brew.

The Mouthfeel is supreme as well blending a very light body with a rich creaminess and the overall taste is a great blend of roasted coffee, charcoal, and a touch of German hops.

Go grab a growler of this one before it disappears for long hiatus.

Black as a lager, or any beer, can get. Big, lasting chocolate-brown froth on top.
Smoky nose of char and expresso.
Grips the mouth with black malt harshness. Almost punishingly so. Some full-roasted , black-as-hell coffee screams down the throat, along with something akin to smoldered liquorice. Smoke and charcoal and scorched ground. Ashen middle is quelled by minor caramel sweetness - just enough to prevent this from becoming unpleasant. A well-lagered sense of flowing water provides the backdrop. Minor spicy German hop finale. Long lingering roastedness follows.
Lighter-than-medium bodied, yet a slightly creamy texture gives this a suggestion of pillowed heft.
Intense and rewarding.

On-tap at the Great Dane in downtown Madison.

Served a deep midnight black with a thin, whispy coating of coffee froth. Nose is subtle, roasted coffee, cocoa, and grain. Taste is also subdued, with burnt day-old coffee, bitter chocolate, and bready, toasty malts. Mouthfeel is smooth, but creamy. Quite drinkable, but filling as well. This is a solid schwarz, not quite as tasty as Sprecher's Black Bavarian, but a good interpretation of a fun style nonetheless.

Almost black. I see dark streaks of ruby through my a light source. Thin light brown head is creamy and leaves a nice amount of droopy lace. This beer's got one helluva nose. Thick roasted malts, chocolate, char, vanilla bean, burnt malts, black coffee...a thing of beauty. Very pronounced aroma. The flavors aren't as bold as the aromas were, but they're nice nonetheless. Milk chocolate. Coffee bean. Lactose. Char. Roasted malts. This is really easy going. Smooth lager like properties are evident. The mouthfeel is quite creamy and luxurious. Body is medium at best. This is quite the drinker. Good stuff.
