Just had this on tap at Mellow Mushroom in Wilder, KY.
A- Extremely clear amber (almost has to be filtered) with a very thin white head that doesn't last long. Each drink of the pint leaves some lacing on the sides of the glass.
S- Barely there. Even after letting it warm, all I get is some faint malt with maybe a hint of hops. Not very promising for a DIPA.
T- Seriously? This is supposed to be an Imperial IPA? It doesn't even taste like an IPA. Maybe a malt-forward Pale Ale. The hops are almost non-existent. Malty sweetness dominates while the hops whimper in the background. I have no idea how old this keg is but I hope that what I'm tasting is at least 6 months old.
M- Decent. Could use a bit more carbonation but goes down easily.
O- I hate to say it, but this is the worst example of a DIPA I've ever had. Nothing about it is imperial. It's a decent amber ale. And it's not just me; my fiancee confirmed a severe lack of hops. I'm not sure what happened with this beer but I hope for some reason I got an off pint.

Much more balanced than is typical for Imperial IPAs, this strong and hoppy ale pins deep caramel malts up against citrusy and piney hops for a rounded and malty ale that keeps the hop onslaught in check.
Pouring a rusty brown-ruby color and with a heavy haze, the beer seems dense even to the eye. Very well headed with a moussey off-white froath that persists during the session while decorating the glass with rings of sticky lace, reminding me of how many drinks it took to finish.
Only moderate notes of citrus and pine scented hops emit from the malty aromas. Toffee, caramel, and brown sugar all provide a balanced nose against the hop oils. The balance continues but with only moderatre intensity. Notes of grass, herbs, and vegetal compounds rise as the beer warms and the olfactory senses begin to separate the hop aromas from the malty ones.
Flavors of caramel and toffee sweetness sets the early stage and carries the flavor deep into finish. Quite rich and robust. However, the hop flavors bounce off of the malts intermittenly for a rise of white grapefruit or grapefruit zest, freshly cut grasses and herbs, resiny pine and spruce, and sharp green onion or garlic. None of these flavors rival the malts, however provide intrigue and balance in flavor. Hop influences turn from citrusy flavored to a mix of sharp and dull bitterness late that helps to provide an element of crispness in finish. A linger of malt and sappy hops linger well into the next sip.
Malty rich to the mouth with a lot of residual sweetness that lingers indefinately on the surfaces of the mouth. A long draw of malt stickiness culminates in the moderate dryness provided by the hop bitterness and alcohol warmth. Finishing malty-dry, the beer retains a lot of malty weight even late.
Though the Imperial IPAs can vary in malt intensity or influence, I'm accustomed to sweeter and maltier versions usually found in East Coast or Midwest fashion. However, the balance of this beer tilts heavily toward English Strong Ale balance but with many of the ingredients being American derived. The choice in hops seem to promote more vegetal character that muddles the ale just a bit. Not what I expect from an Imperial IPA but certainly not dissapointing either.

shocked to see such extreme negativity in the first review on here...I think he was expecting to review more of a straight IPA for a hophead nivana than a balanced DIPA...hoping some others check this out as it is a very good beer, but yes, slightly off balance in it being malt forward.
a: cloudy amber in color with a barely there eggshell head. moderate lacing.
s: Sweet aroma penetrates the thin head. Sweet apple and toffee with mild spices. No trace of pine, but touches of citrus presents itself at the end of the nose.
t: super sweet caramel and apple with mild appearances of citrus zest. spices I cannot tell but seem to be leaning towards nutmeg and cinnamon. This reminds me slightly of a caramel apple butter made from granny smith. A very flavorful malt profile here, and the sweetness is very well balanced by the bitter finishing hops. There isn't much FLAVOR from the hops on this, but they are used well to offset the extreme sweetness.
m: By far the highlight of this brew for me. rich and creamy with a perfect level of carbonation. The medium body coats the palette to perfection and gives the sweet malt start and bitter hop finish the perfect vehicle to make your mouth water. Nice feel here.
o: a good Double with a very strong malt backbone. It is leaning quite a bit in the direction of the malt and could use a bit more balance, but the flavors of the malt are very welcome and a nice change of pace.
