I stopped by to meet a friend, basing my decision on a website reporting that House of Brews boast a continuous rotation of cask conditioned ales. There are a couple of tables outside, a fairly long bar with seating for about a dozen, and several tables for small groups. The selection is broad enough; there are 19 taps and about twice as many beers, ciders, and hard sodas in cans and bottles. Wine, mixed drinks, and food are also on the menu. The service was pretty good, but it's hard to know how one would fair if the place had been crowded; it was virtually empty when I was there. Nothing on the menu really "pushes the envelope," although one can get quite a number of respectable choices from the NYC area. My source of greatest frustration, however, was that there were no cask conditioned ales. When I asked the server, she acted like she didn't know what I was talking about. Okay for an overpriced drink, but not really for the beer aficionado.

Although I don't have much new to add, it looks like this place hasn't been reviewed in 3 years, so I'll refresh things.

Maybe 20-ish beers on tap. However, while there were a few beers of good repute (e.g., Delirium Tremens), most were macro or craft lagers or other "entry level" craft. In particular, the only stout/porter on tap was Guinness. I lean towards the dark side, and I expect that any beer place with more than a half dozen taps should always have at least one craft stout/porter on tap.

They do offer flights.

They did have a better selection of bottles, but I go out for draft beer.

Food was decent. I had a Cobb salad, wife had a veggie burger, both were fine.

We did not experience the noise issue others reported, but we were there in mid-afternoon on a weekday so the place was fairly empty.

While not in the league of the top places in Manhattan, this is a perfectly decent place in the Theater District to stop for a beer.

Nice atmosphere and quiet vibe on a Thursday at midnight, a whole lot less raucous than sat The Pony Bar or Blind Tiger at an equivalent time. We sat in the window and got prompt service from the bartender. He was very pleasant and attentive.

Beer selection is pretty good, an awful lot of macros sit side by side with Chimay or Green Flash or Ommegang or the like. Nothing mind blowing but very solid.

Not a place to go out of your way to try, but no need to walk by it either.

An easy stop off the ACE train in NYC's West Side. Now this place looked very promising, but let me tell you why I don't endorse it. First off, the beer list seemed somewhat impressive as far as quantity was concerned, though quality-wise they had mostly lightweight beers, from the tamest of the tame in the micro/craft scene; maybe one or two uncommons that drew my interest. More importantly, the service was terrible...among the worst I've ever experienced in a bar, much less a "beer bar." On a light day, it took me about 15 minutes just to get a drink order in, while the amateur bartenders chatted jovially with their annoying regulars, completely ignoring me and other patrons. Plus, both menus were out of date, and I had to reorder both drink and food. Then--45 minutes after ordering--I got an ice cold bangers and mash that was sub-Denny's quality for twice the price. It's hard for me to get pissed at a bar that is still [somewhat] in tune with the beer scene...I left a small tip (which is still way more than they deserved), rushed out, and will surely never go back to this place again.

Sucks. Please avoid.

House Of Brews... oh, how I despise this place! Very much so.

I used to give them a lot of business back in the day. Not too long ago, actually, maybe a year or two ago... I was starting to get into beer and this place was right in my neighborhood and had some good stuff. So there I went, once and twice and many times. Until "Quoth the Raven, "Nevermore." And I never came back.

Because this is the worst kind of place- a place that wants you think it is all about good beer but it actually is not. A place that says "100 beers from all over the world" but 80 of them are bottled lagers and light beers. A place that has got 20 taps but almost 15 of them are average stuff (Newcastle, Guinness, Hoegaarden, Stella). Nasty indeed. I feel like they're lying.

They have now added growlers and a thing called "Tap the rare keg night". Their "rare" (note the sarcasm) offerings are things like Bear Republic Red Rocket and Shipyard Old Thumper. Seriously.

They pride themselves not on their beer offerings as much as on their 17 TV's, football nights, Stella and Bud Light specials and similar crap. That should tell you all you need to know. Stay away.

Oh, they have a cask beer I have never been able to try because it is always broken or "gonna be tapped soon" or similar bullshit.

Service is OK, average, just like everything else in this bar except for the prices, which are outrageous!!! Except for Bud Light, which is $5, everything else starts at $6.75 and goes up to $11.

Food is pub food cooked by Mexicans. Greasy and overpriced, but it goes well with your Bud Light. Their fries are great, though, only thing I like here.

So you get the point, right? This place is a shame. If you care about beer, do yourself a favor and walk two blocks down to The Pony Bar.

This was a pleasant surprise. Its Saturday just before noon and they're open. A group of 4 guys sitting at a table while I had the whole bar to myself. Duvel Green was in my sights and I had to go for it first without even looking at the menu. A nice 16.oz serving in a tulip glass and I was getting closer to heaven. The alcohol was getting to me and then I ordered a serving of Calamari. It was excellent. I could have had another Duvel Green but I went for Weihenstephaner Hefe-Weisse. Another great tasting brew. The taps were great and the bottle selection was plentiful. If you are ever in the neighborhood and you have some extra cash, stop by. 2 beers and one gourmet appetizer cost me 31 bucks, but it was worth it. my taste buds were happy.

Boy, reading these other reviews really surprises me. The beer selection was the best we encountered on our visit to New York, with a total of 80 beers to choose from. We first visited on a Thursday night during the NCAA tournament and it was packed and loud, but it did not diminish from the experience -- very fun and we were able to continue having our conversation and enjoyed the people watching. The food was better than average but nothing that I'd choose to eat if I didn't need to eat. My wife stuck with the Hop Angel while I tried a few different local offerings. The service was great on our first visit and efficient on our second visit. The place is very small (capacity 77), so it doesn't take much to make it feel crowded. If that bothers you, stay away. But if you enjoy rubbing shoulders with New Yorkers and a few tourists, you will probably find something you'll enjoy drinking.

I've only been once and I don't think I'll be going back. The wall-to-wall large screen TVs and 3-foot-tall beer bong pitchers should have been an immediate sign that House of Brews is, in fact, not a beer bar but a frat bar with beer bar ambitions.

Our server was nice but didn't really seem to care much about beer. And as excited as I was to see the specialty beer list, I was just as disappointed to hear it wasn't current, and many of the listed beers weren't actually available. When I asked for a Mother's Milk (Keegan Ales), our server recommended an Irish red in its place, since I like dark beer. The cask ale, I was told, had been tapped wrong and had soured. We eventually left when they cranked up the house music and we couldn't even hear each other across the table.

There are so many quality beer bars in NYC which take pride in their beer knowledge that there is really no need to try House of Brews.

West side, almost central, below the park. Close to both Valhalla and Single Room Occupancy.

Not a bad place, but not great either.

I do like the kind of subterranean feel to it, but on the other hand it's almost kind of sports-bar like. Nevertheless, it's nicely appointed and well kept.

They offer 18 taps that include 6 local brews, 5 domestic mainstream beers, 4 Belgians (also mostly mainstream), 2 Germans, and 1 Irish (care to guess what that might be?). The 6 local brews help, and Sierra Nevada Pale Ale is always welcome, but other than that it's really a fairly limp tap line-up.

They also offer a vintage and specialty bottle selection but I was not impressed with that either. I think there was one beer that I hadn't had, which was a new release from Allagash. Of course, some may be interested in some J.W. Lee's or something like that and they've got it.

Price-wise I thought the beers were fair, even the "vintage/specialty" selections given that it's Manhattan. The food I had was also cheap because it was during a football game - good promo with $5 appetizers. Alas, the food itself was only just OK.

The bar service was good, but certainly not great, especially given that the bar was only one third full. And the crowd was OK, but certainly not the type of crowd I expect at a beer bar. No, these were people that drink one kind of beer and basically keep to themselves or the groups that they're with.

Overall, ahhh, I'd guess it might be worth a visit if you're in the area, but honestly, there are so many other places around that it's really not worth it.

Cheers!

My girlfriend took me here for our anniversary.

A: Seemed like a pretty chill place when we got there at first. Pretty cool atmosphere and seemed like a place I would go to just to hang out with my friends. After we were there for a few hours, the loud, club music started to come on and killed the chill mood a little bit.

Q: The quality of the beer was pretty good. The place, beer-ware, and bathrooms were all clean and well-maintained (well-maintained bathrooms are not always the case in New York). The draft beer I had seemed pretty fresh, so the kegs are rotated regularly.

S: The service was ok. When we first got there, they came right over and got us what we wanted immediately. They were more than willing to give me their "Special Beer List" (which included cave aged Ommegang Abbey Ale - for about $35!).

S: A decent selection overall. They have their list of beers broken out by country, with a decent selection. As I discussed above, they have a Special Beer list available upon request, which was fairly interesting. While they do offer some rarer beers in that list, the price goes from reasonable to exorbitant rather quickly, with no significant increase in the quality of the offerings. Also, as a note, some of their classifications are off - and possibly a ploy to charge more money? - as Ommegang Three Philosophers was classified as being from Belgium. While I know that Ommegang is partially owned by a Belgian company and they specialize in making Belgian beers, last I checked, Brewery Ommegang is in Cooperstown, NY, which is no where near Beligium.

Overall, the place was decent, but if you are in New York and only have time to go to one place, check out the Ginger Man. You might be able to skip over this one and not miss that much.

This review is not based on that beer. anyway that was my experience with 3 friends.

Pretty easy to find this place amongst the smaller restaurants on the street since there is a big yellow sign out front. You walk down to a cellar level bar that is somewhat dark but clean looking. There was a decent crowd so we sat at a hightop table just off the bar. Several patrons were drinking some macro beers from those big plastic vessels that have a tap handle on the bottom. Ugh.

Waitress service was OK, nothing tremedous and we did not really get into a beer discussion to test her knowledge. There are 20 beers on tap here and the selection was somewhat lackluster beyond the Sixpoint, Southampton, Brooklyn, and Smuttynose. There was also Widmer, Magic Hat, Blue Moon, Kona Longboard, and Smithwicks were some others.

Not worth a trip here as you can find these beers on tap at any NYC bar or restaurant. Not bad for a quick pint though.

This bar falls into the category: Don’t go out of your way but if you’re in the area, definitely check it out.

It has a sports bar feel. I guess that’s what it primarily is, a sports bar with decent brew. Lot’s of wood and lots of TVs. I watched the French Open while there on my lunch break.

Service was very good. The bartend was quick to tell me what was on tap and what seasonals they had. When I asked him what they had on cask a glimmer shown in his eye and he gave me a sample of the Sixpoint Brown.

20 taps and many bottles. Nothing too special on tap, but a good 3 or four rotating seasonals, which is nice. Also some nice Belgians in bottles.

I did not try food, but it seemed slightly expensive, but that’s due to the Hell’s Kitchen ‘hood.

I had the Sixpoint Brown on cask that he gave me sample of. It was the perfect temperature! This was nice considering my usual lunch spot Stouts, which serves their cask ales way too COLD. It was priced nice at $6. Other beers seemed highly priced, so stick with their cask offering—it’s probably your best bet anyway.

A friend from New York took us here while bar-hopping on a Friday night. The place was pretty crowded - mainly with people watching NCAA basketball on all the TVs. A nice pub feel to it: low ceilings, wood accents, beer bottles lining the walls. Seemed like a decent selection of beers: a good amount of cans and bottles, plus a number of beers on tap. Just glancing at the fridge in front of me, I saw cans of Old Chubb, bottles a various Belgians, some Ommegang Three Philosophers. The bartender was quite nice - fast service despite the busy hour. My wife and a friend split some nachos, which were pretty good. Overall, I'm not a fan of noisy bars, but this one felt comfortable and friendly, despite the crowd. If I was in the neighborhood and needed a place to go, I would most likely return.

I stumbled across this place early in the afternoon, and we stopped into to have a beer.
I was drawn to this place from across the street and it had a nice big sign displaying the name....when you look into the window you see a bunch of taps that are in the lobby...I was hoping this is what they had on tap but there was a slight variation. This place has a nice long bar, and pretty many beers on tap...there were a couple TV's over the bar that had boxing on...the vibe was alright...I really like when places are not sports bars...this place was on the verge of being a sports bar though. There is a link to their website a couple reviews down...and I think it has a beer list on it.

The woman who was bar tending was also waiting tables and she came over and took our order...I asked a question and I kinda felt like she expected me to know nothing about beer....when I asked about the Hop Rod Rye she asked "do you know what I mean when I say hops?" I guess she was just being cautious and not give me something that I would hate. My girlfriend and our friends were drinking #9. Overall they had a pretty impressive selection both bottles and taps.

There was something funny about the #9(and now come to think of it the Hop Rod too), it was way more bitter than it was at other places that I had been drinking it....It might have just been the taps.

one cool little find was that they had a local Beer Zine, and a Regional Beer Newspaper....these were cool finds...I was then able to seek out some other bars that had decent beer.

I went to this place about a year ago and was totally unimpressed. Went back last night for a birthday and I was pleasantly surprised. They've really upgraded their beer list. I guess the bartender there used to work for David Copperfields, so maybe he has something to do with this turnaround.

This is another good sports bar/beer bar combo place. There's 2 flat screens behind the bar, a couple in the back seating area and a couple more here and there. The place is long and narrow. There's seating for 15 or so at the bar and 5 or so round tables directly across. This made it very tight as we were getting bumbed up against because we were standing between the tables and barstools. Not enough TVs to play every single football game, but enough to guarantee that local and popular games will be on. Dan Patrick (ESPN anchor) was actually sitting at the table next to us.

Service was pretty good. Our waitress was a sweetheart, cute, and actually knew her beers. I was very surprised by that because the place otherwise does have a bit of a theme-restaurant vibe. Like I said previously, the bartender used to work at David Copperfield's, so he's a knowledgable beer guy as well.

There are 20 taps on the back wall (I always prefer this setup) split between 4 barrels that they're protruding from. Pretty cool. Last time I was here the beers were not too special, this time around, I thought the selection was worth the visit. Check the site for the beer list:
http://www.houseofbrewsny.com/FortySixth.html

No throw aways taking up any of the taps, except for maybe Stella. Highlights on draft were the Goose Island Honkers, Smutty Old Brown Dog, Rogue American Amber, Hop Rod Rye, Ommegang Hennepin and Ithaca Nut Brown. There's 3 taps reserved for seasonals, which makes me believe (along with the heavily laminated beer lists) that the other taps probably don't change often. The bottle selection, though somewhat limited at around 40 beers, has some nice choices. Again 3 seasonal selections, two of which were Harpoon Hibernian and Rogue Chipotle. I friggin' love Rogue Chipotle. They separate "American Craft Beers" on the menu from the handfull of macro brews they need to stock to please the masses...nice touch. Highlights for me were the Middle Ages Wailing Wench, Hazed & Infused, Southern Tier IPA (one of the best IPAs in my opinion), DFH 60 minute, Saranac Caramel Porter, Victory Hop Devil, Three Philosophers, Rogue Dead Guy, Delerium Tremens, Duvel, Orval & Nostradamus. Not as deep a selection as a David Copperfields or Gingerman, but there's definitely enough good beers to keep anyone happy for a visit.

Food was standard pub fare. I shared some calamari, nachos, onion rings and spinach/artichoke dip. Nothing particularly special about any of these.

At $7 for many of the taps, this place is priced a full dollar over any other beer bar in Manhattan that I'm familiar with, so this is definitely a bit pricey. You can thank the theatre district location for that.

I'm not going to go out of my way to go here often because it's not in my neighborhood, but I'll make the odd visit when my friends get sick of me dragging them to the same few places all the time. I will admit that I might go back soon while they still have the Rogue Chipotle in bottle as the seasonal selection.

It was late Easter Sunday, raining cats and dogs, and after a huge meal in little Italy, I suggested we walk through the village to the Blind Tiger, but was almost unanimously shot down by my group of friends, who were all partied out and just wanted to go back to the hotel and sleep. I followed them along, but I did convince the last few die-hard boozers for a final Beer at House of Brews, only two blocks away from our room.

Nice row of taps as you walk down the stairs, long bar, with more tables at the back, near the widescreen TVs and the stairs down to the restrooms. The place was D-E-A-D, but so were most of the streets that night. One saving grace for the atmosphere was the music, they seemed to have tuned in to a 80’s cheesy rock station, so crooning along to Glass Tiger and Loverboy gave us a few good laughs.

I was sort of disappointed in the Beer list, not anything outstanding on the imported side, and domestics were okay, but none that made me go “wow I gotta try this”. The only out of the ordinary brew was the Harpoon 100 Barrel series, but I thought it was going to be the porter, but I got the revival ale, and was frankly let down by it.

Service was tame, considering the fact that we were less than 10 people in the house, the couple at the bar seemed to be friends of the bartender because he paid little to no attention to us, had to go to the bar for service and even then he made us wait.

With so many other good Beer bars in town, I don’t think I’ll give this place another thought. And to think I could’ve went to Blind Tiger instead if I had insisted more.

I was in the House of Brews twice last month. Both times Friday night. It was not really crowded, but definitely not empty. All bar stools and almost all tables were taken, but you could still easily get around the place. The place is very clean and the staff is friendly. Both times I found the music unnecessarily loud. I don't like to raise my voice when I talk, so I found the music very irritating.

The beer selection was solid. Nothing too unusual, but there was a nice choice. They had about 20 taps. You can get the full list from their website. My top pick last time was Sam Adams White Ale.

I didn't eat a lot, but whatever I had was good.

Bonus points: They acknowledge BeerAdvocate.com in their menu (as in "beer scores from BA are available").

This is a very nice place. If only they could turn their music a little bit down...

Edit:
I've been to this place a few times for lunch recently, so I would like to add that the food is quite good and decently priced for the neighborhood. Very enjoyable pub grub. Of course, the place is practically dead during the day. On a sadder note, selection appears to be slipping. Or maybe I am just becoming pickier. I am not lowering the score just yet. Need more research.

Another edit:
I've been here a few more times for lunch since my last edit, and I've decided to lower selection from 4.5 to 4. Sure they have about 40 taps, but Smithwick's, Guinness, Bass, Stella do not make it a great selection. They don't use their number of taps wisely (The Collins Bar around the corner with its measly 10 taps beats this place for selection hands down).

Right amongst Restaurant Row the yellow sign is like a beacon for good beer. Even though the Collins Bar is right down the street I had to check this place out. As soon as I walked in I had felt a faded feeling of being in a typical Irish Pub yet the selection alone told me different. Semi-sports bar with the flat panel TVs? Certainly one of the best beer selections in this part of the city with around 50 beers to choose from, they had roughly 20 on tap and 30 in the bottle ... drop the Bud, Stella and Amstel and it will be a better beer bar but I guess some places need to have these beers to pay the bills. Clean and correct glassware with a nearly perfect pour every time ... a lemon was served with my wheat beer but I won't hold that against them. The prices were on par for this part of town as well though during happy hour the draft beers are a $1 off. Great to see something different in this area other than prix fixed eateries.

Not a bad looking price, and the bartender was quite nice, but for a place that advertises itself as "House of Brews" and brags in the ads about how many beers they have, I was pretty unimpressed with the selection. There was nothing really interesting in the draft list (they had 2 "house" beers from Brooklyn that I assume are just the standard Brooklyn Pilsner and Post Road Light Dinner Ale), and even the best of the bottles (Saison Dupont, Duvel, and a few others) are not hard to find. Maybe they'll improve, but at the moment the main reason to stop in this place would be because it's on the way from the much better Collins Bar around the corner to the much better Hallo Berlin a couple of blocks away. I did think the home-made style potato chips were pretty good

Something new in Ubu's neighborhood. Long narrow place with a bar running a good length, seating for upwards of a dozen and a half. Adjacent round bar tables and a small seating area towards the back. Beer signs here and there, bottles lining a shelf above the bar, half yard glasses and 3 quart beer bongs riddled about and plasma screen TV's behind the bar and to the rear.

20 taps, nothing too out of the ordinary. 2 Brooklyns and 2 Brooklyn house beers, a few Redhooks, SNPA, #9, Leffe Blonde, Stella, Paulaner Pils, Hacker Pschorr Weisse, Chimay Triple, Smithwicks, Guinness, Kronenborg. I had the Hacker Pschorr Weisse, it was clean and fresh, maybe a little colder than I'd like it.

30 bottles. Some decent things going on here. Affligem Blonde, Duvel, Corsendonk Brown, Veuve White, Saison Dupont, Reissdorf Kolsch, Ayinger Celebrator, Schneider Weisse, Fischer Amber, Sam Smith, Coopers, Smuttynose IPA, Victory Hop Devil, Bluepoint Toasted Lager, Cisco Whales Tale, Gearys Pale Ale, Rogue Dead Guy Ale.

Not too bad overall although the tap selection could be considerably more interesting than the standard micros and imports. Show me your stuff.

West side, upper theatre area location. Nice, clean new place, narrow bar, some tables and booths in rear. Hi tech TVs and sound system. Probably would be a good spot to catch a game on the tube. Bathrooms down stairs, have an "Alice in Wonderland " quality to them. Better then average selection, some "tap wasters" but also Chimay, Leffe and a Bklyn on tap. About 25 bottle selections , including Dupont saison and a Rogue. So, I'd say any BA would find some quality brew to enjoy. Nothing really exotic. Friendly Bartender, good service when I visited after work. They need to educate the staff (Leffe Blond in a pilsner glass...) and hopefully beer rotation will happen. Worth a visit.

Opened middle of April on restaurant row in a refurbished space. Decor is fairly spartan with no identifiable theme. Bathrooms downstairs were clean. They have about 15 taps and 40 bottles. Selection is more common than not. A bunch of macros along with Red Hook, Brooklyns and SNPA, nothing out of the ordinary. Bottle list had a few interesting ones(compared to the rest) such as Rogue Dead Guy and Victory HopDevil.

The Irish bartender knew nothing about beer. My Hacker-Pschorr hefe was too cold as expected. They need to keep the Buds icy cold. This place has potential. It just seems out of place on restaurant row but because of the location it may stay geared towards the psuedo-micros. I didn't try the food. I'm not sure if they'll rotate the beers but it's worth a stop. If there's nothing of interest you have Collins Bar right around the corner.
