Had on tap at the Brewery

A-Black, not much carbonation present. A white-ish head.

S-Lots of roasted malt, some coffee.

T-Starts with the roasted malt, coffee flavors come in as well. Not much bitterness is present.

M-Light for a porter and not much carbonation.

O-A solid porter, could have used a little more carbonation but a solid beer none the less.

L: Pours a deep brown/black color with a short and light tan colored head that leaves little lacing as it fades.
S: Smells of sweet roasted malts, some faint hops, a hint of chocolate and caramel as well.
T: Tastes of the sweet chocolate and caramel up front and then a more bitter roasty finish.
M: Very smooth, warming, and the right amount of carbonation.
D: Very drinkable porter as the bomber was finished in no time. Really good mix of the flavors in this beer and well worth a try.

I have tried this beer several different times 'on cask' as Brown's 'Whiskey Porter'. It is a rotational offering of their regular porter that is aged in a whiskey barrel. I was in heaven the first time I took a sip. It is very dark brown, almost black in appearance. A tannish head sits atop this brew, and it is extremely creamy as a result of the stout faucet it is dispensed through. The whiskey aroma dominates the senses as it is brought closer for a sip. The first taste is most noticibly met with the whiskey essence from the barrel. This is followed by a presence of smokey and roasted grain flavors. The finish is very palatable due to it's modest alcohol content and balanced hop bitterness and aroma.

If you like whiskey and dark beer, this beer will definately please. I have had only one bad experience, where it was served to me with no head and a very low level of carbonation. This has to be attributed to the temperamental quality of cask beers. Other than this, this beer has been consistantly exceptional and is worthy of high marks.

The beer pours a deep dark black color with a thick frothy tan head that slowly fades to lacing. The aroma is decent. It has a dry, earthy black and roasted malt scent. The taste is good. It has a smooth black and chocolate malt flavor that goes down easy and finishes earthy and roasted with some residual sweetness. It has a strong robust taste; very nice. The mouthfeel is fine. It is a full bodied beer with adequate carbonation. This is a good porter. It has a solid malt bill that creates a well balanced, complex flavor.

Was able to give this brew a try when it was on cask. It is their normal porter but they transfer it to Whiskey barrels and allow it to condition. The brew looked to be black in color but that could have been from the lighting in the building, with a smallish tan head that actually had pretty good retention and left some lacing. The aroma was very appealing, nice roasted malt scent mixed with a slight sweet and whiskey smell. The brew itself is very smooth/creamy, almost velvety. It has a very robust roasted taste with a slight hint of smoke and finishes slightly dry. If a brew can be rich with flavors I feel that this one is. This is a brew that I could settle on for an entire night and next time I go will be the first one I ask for.

My one dark beer during this visit to Brown’s in downtown Troy, this brew is a dark chocolatey brown with a decent dark tan cover that clings to the glass like a blanket. The aroma offers a deep chocolate malt with a pleasant herbal hop. Very nice. The flavor comes on with a somewhat less aggressive chocolate biscuit. The body is notably lighter than the aroma suggested, medium-light with a glassy feel that includes a fair tingly carbonation. The herbal hop remains and makes for an interesting marriage with the chocolate bread ideas present here. Not a bad flavor but I would enjoy this so much more with a little more chewiness. The carbonation and light body seem to quickly carry away the flavor and leaves it a bit watered down. But still, the basic flavors do linger enough to make this enjoyable, I just wish it lived up to the nose hit. I might say that there’s a little charcoal edge but it’s subtle. The flavor seems to revive a little as you go but I think this would benefit from less sharp watery notes and more mellow chocolatey ones. Not bad at all.

A - Served a deep dark black color with some brown hues around the edges. There is a finger of off-white head atop that fades down to a super thin ring leaving behind a bit of lace.

S - Aroma is full of roasted and lightly burnt sweet caramel malt. There is some chocolate and coffee as well in the background.

T - Starts off with brunt sweet caramel malt with lots of roasted flavors mixing in. There is also a bit of chocolate in the background. Through the middle some more burnt flavor comes through with a bit of hop flavor. The finish adds a bit of coffee flavor with a touch of bitterness that lingers nicely.

M - Medium bodied with moderate-low carbonation. Feels smooth and just a touch creamy. There is some nice lingering roasted and burnt flavors that create a touch of dryness.

D - Very drinkable. Tastes really well balanced with a lot of roasted and burnt flavors that are really tasty. Very nice coffee and chocolate flavors mixed in.
