I absolutely love love love this place, it has the greatest atmosphere during the summer in their backyard terrace. The trees are overgrown into the seating area and it creates a very nice ambiance. The beer selection is very nice, with a good variety of local initiatives. Prices are reasonable. However, I do not recommend the food, I was very disappointed with my sausage selection, as it was a full 10 pounds of bread, with a small endowed sausage in the middle...they should do better!

Excellent and broad (over 30 drafts) selection from local breweries, with fairly regular changes. A while back, there was an emphasis on IPAs (that's a good thing). You can get a 6-beer sampler if you can't make up your mind. The food is so-so... got a fairly raw burger once. Service varies, with the occasional grumpy-artist-hipster, but is not too bad.

I went to this place after reviewing it on BA and thought this would be a great place to go on my beercation in Montreal. If you are staying in Montreal its a few blocks away from the subway station. If me and my girl did it in the snow and 10 degree weather, then its worth the trip.

There is a small sign outside so try to look for it closely. When you first walk in there are tables and a bar is towards the back. There is another small room to the right that has a few more tables in it. I sat at the bar to look at the chalkboard. This place had 32 beers on tap and 1 cask beer. The list was overwhelming because I did not reconize any beers on the list, which is great.

The bartender was polite and very talkative. He gave us great recomdations for beer and even told us about all of the other great bars in the area. The service was top notch and the beers where equally excellent. They seem to really care about the beer and serve very few macros from the area.

The place was lively and had a young energetic feel but was not crazy. I wish I had more time to spend there.

I suggest anybody going to Montreal for some great beer try this place out.

Vices et Versa is the best beer bar(it's not a brewpub) in Montreal - period. It features 30+ draught beers from Quebec craft breweries that are unknown to most Americans or even to Canadians from other provinces. They aren't distributed outside Quebec but are as good as any I've had in North America. How often does one get to explore a beer list containing 33 unfamiliar craft beers?

The interior is appealing with exposed brick walls and a really nice terrasse in back during good weather. The place is mellow, relaxed, and doesn't feel like a typical bar. It's location is a good way from downtown and a little north of the Mile End area, but can be easily reached by the frequent St. Laurent bus. This keeps it free from tourists.

They only serve light snacks but there are plenty of restaurants nearby(it's on the edge of Montreal's little Italy). I've been here many times and have always found the staff friendly and helpful with no hint of the snobbiness a previous review referred to.

I highly recommend making the effort to get to Vices et Versa and spending a lengthy session. It can easily be combined with a trip to Dieu du Ciel and I often come here when I tire of the large crowds that flock to that brewpub.

A totally ass kicking beer bar! An 'amazing' selection of outstanding LOCAL breweries in various styles! I came to Montreal on business and was looking for a good local beer experience. This place totally knocked my sox off! With a chalkboard of 33 local Quebec beers that's updated daily, and a simple but high quality food menu, you couldn't ask for a better place to spend your after work hours! If you're a beer lover who lives in the greater Montreal area and haven't been here before.... you're definitely missing out on a GREAT experience!

This was the first stop on a pub crawl through some of the brew pubs in Montreal back in November. For some reason it was smaller than I was expecting - and less trendy - which was good.

It feels very much like a neighborhood pub. Its cozy and there was a real mix of people from younger to older all enjoying a quiet pint and conversation.

The beer selection was outstanding. 30 some micros up on a big chalkboard. Samplers are available and come labelled so you know what's what.

Service was good. Polite and quick. None of us tried the food. After the crawl was over we all agreed that it was our favorite spot (DDC included). Highly recommended.

Stopped in while in town for Mondial. My second time here, and as a visitor to Montreal I love this place. It's in more of a residential neighborhood, and not in Montreal's 'tourist zone.' Just a short walk from the Beaubien Metro stop. FYI - they don't open until 3pm.

The atmosphere feels like a pub to me (not the cafe feel the Montreal native observed), including the wooden bar, tin ceiling, huge chalkboards listing beers, and the tree-covered beer garden/patio in the back.

During our two trips here, my wife and I have ordered many different beers without issue, so quality is good. Service has always been helpful, despite the fact that we don't speak French.

Selection was awesome for a visitor to Quebec, with 33 Quebec beers up when we were there. Great variety of styles as well.

Food is only OK. It tasted good but selection was limited: small pita bread pizzas, sausages, cheese samplers.

Like any brewpub (okay not really a brewpub but close) I really wanted to visit this place. As soon as I stepped inside, something felt weird. It looks like a great place to grab coffee but didn't really have that pub/beer place feel to it. No matter, I took a seat at the bar and ordered.

Lots of beer here, I'm pretty sure all from Quebec but for some reason tasting them on tap wasn't so much better than bottled. The food was of good quality but not delicious and a little expensive.
Staff is generally knowledgeable and knows/can suggest most of the beers on their 30+taps. That's always a good thing.
They are quite anal and annoying about their ''no tabs'' thing though I did manage to get one going on one occasion.

Only visited this one twice but stayed for about 4 hours on both occasions. After my first visit, my girlfriend who enjoyed it a bit more than me asked if I'd be returning to which I answered: ''I have very little desire to do so but maybe one day''.
A couple months later I got invited for a business meeting and realized I did not want to return a third time. On the second trip I tasted some of the worst beers I've ever had (especially their house APA). So selection is hard for me to rate: Big selection with a considerable amount of bad products.

So..
-Looks very good and has a terrace out back but has a weird coffee shop vibe.
-Good quality food and beer but no real effort in preparing it.
-Staff knows beer but is not the friendliest and kind of snobby.
-I found it more expensive than other brewpubs in the city.
-They played Canadiens hockey games during playoffs (good thing)

I think this place is great for Quebec beer and other people (and other reviewers) seem to really like this place so I won't say don't try it but I'd rather just buy bottles from the featured breweries and try them at home and go to any other of Montreal's great brewpubs for great beer on tap.

Also... both times I left and went go to Dieu du Ciel which is real close... just sayin'

Awesome bar on the edges of Little Italy. Arrived right at opening, and ran into the owner of Hopfenstark, Frederick delivering his kegs. Despite being exhausted he took the time to talk beer - really wish we could've took him up on his invite to the brewery. Next time. Really wish we had places like this at home. A must visit.

Hopfenstark LouLou Porter
TM Weizen Bock
Hopfenstark Post Colonial IPA
Hopfenstark Ostalgia Blonde
Brassiere ? Blanche Gingembre
TM Sticke Alt - one of the most unappealing beer I've had in a long time.

a real treat to go into a place not being from the area and seeing 33 taps with nothing you've ever had on them. most were really fantastic and extremely local. almost every from quebec breweries or brewpubs. the service was quite nice. samples were pricey but they didn't want you having something you didn't like. i told them i was from out of the area and didn't know where to begin and they started pouring sips without question. the sampler was 11 buck i believe... 6 five oz glasses. a tad pricey like i said but it seems to be the consensus for the better beer bars around montreal. there was a back patio with tons of sitting and a nice cool night so that was a must. if you don't know anything about the montreal or quebec beer culture this is a great place to start. the website is quite helpful too.

i highly recommend anything by hopfenstark.

oh... also... don't come here for bottles. they had 4 i think. so that was a minus.

the pretzels were expensive to say the least but they came with a good djion mustard.
