Artooemomo has nailed this one. It is the first Scotch Ale for me so I can't compare but this is a great beer. I wish I found it sooner, like when it was cold out. Whole Foods had in n sale for $4 and it had a good rating so out of curiosity I bought it. Good buy for sure. The extreme finish is on the low side but so what, just take another drink.

Appearance- Pours up a fair amount of head which basically has no retention at all. The head is a light beige while the body is a chestnut brown with hints of maroon which glows mostly maroon when held up to the light. No lacing is left behind.

Nose- I get caramel, toffee, vanilla, and the slightest whiff of oak when I smell from the bottle. The glass gives off some roasted notes that are a little thin and some weak smoke notes. Swirling it around causes caramel, brown sugar, and molasses to move to the surface. Fairly nice aroma but it is a little subtle. There is a mild alcohol presence as well.

Taste- Caramel, brown sugar, and molasses are the first notes that I get along with a mild and warming alcohol presence. Notes of coconut and raisins. Some butterscotch. Faint roasted notes but nothing that contributes in real bitterness except the vanilla and oak which hang around the edges. The flavor profile is complex but a little muted. This is mostly a positive (especially for me, as I don't tend to enjoy unchecked heavy malt bills). The balance is amazing and seems to develop from the type of restraint you typically find in English brewing. This is a very enjoyable beer which appears as if it would be tasty with age or fresh.

Mouthfeel- Medium bodied with almost no carbonation. Because of the nature of the style, this isn't a big negative but even a little carbonation would give it more structure.

Drinkability- The sublime nature of the flavor profile makes this a potentially dangerous beer. While heat is noticeable at first taste, it begins to mellow and fade into the soft contours of the other flavor notes. At around 8 bucks a bottle, this beer is definitely worth the money.

Overall- This is a definite must try. This may be my favorite Scotch ale though I haven't had that many. This is a definite repurchase and I will be buying Silver City's base for this beer in the future.

draft at uber awhile back, entered from notes

a: served in a snifter, the beer is a clear, reddish amber in color with an off-white head that shows good coverage to start but soon falls back

s: big malty nose with brown sugar, toffee, and nuances of peat smoke layered with vanilla and oak, dark fruits - black fig and raisin

m: body medium-full with a lower level of carbonation, creamy and smooth

t: closely follows the lead of the nose with a rich, malty body of black dried fruits, dark sugar, toffee, and a hint of peat, complimented with smooth vanilla, a quick touch of roast

o: been years since I had the standard scotch, so no comparisons, but the oak does well here by me, a tasty scotch ale with a good barrel character

650 mL bottle poured into a snifter.

Appearance - Sedimenty reddish brown with a decent khaki head. Wispy retention.

Smell - Oak is pretty strong. Vanilla comes through. Cola aromas. Diacetyl. Caramel. Maybe closer to toffee.

Taste - Much more cola like flavors. Diacetyl is there up front. Woody bite in Te back with some sulfuric smoke. The finish is an odd mix of wood and smoke.

Mouthfeel - Medium bodied. Medium carbonation. Big scotch ale, but I didn't really notice.

Overall - It's all over the place with its flavors. The wood is only interesting on the nose. The smoke hinders it in the aftertaste.

Poured from 22oz bomber into a pint glass. This bottle is labeled as being 9.2% ABV, rather than the above-noted 9.7%.

Appearance: rich amber-brown hue with a light haze and effervescence. Head poured a finger of frothy tan foam which subsided quickly; par for the style. Overall a good looking beer!

Smell: rich, warm malt aroma with a bready quality almost reminiscent of banana bread. There's also definitely a woodiness present here, which is more of a tannic dryness sitting atop the rest of the aroma. It's an interesting effect; overall, not bad.

Taste: big, rich malt flavor with a lot more woodiness than the aroma. There's definitely a dry, tannic quality mixing in with the sweet malt, and I think it works less successfully than in the aroma. The malt is very sweet and bready, and has some biscuity quality I don't love. Decent, but not wonderful.

Mouthfeel: big body with a nice, well-integrated carbonation and a silky smooth creaminess. Good stuff.

Overall: this beer is OK, but I don't like it as much as the non-woody Silver City Fat Scotch ale. Something about the character of the malt just doesn't ring my bell.

Review from 9/2010 notes. Poured into a Caracole small snifter. Pours a dark red amber with little carbonation, just a thin line of foam around the glass edge. Caramel malt and faint oak aroma. Caramel malt and oak, mild dark fruits and esters. Finish is somewhat dry with a an abrupt light bitterness. What flavors are there are pleasant, but seem subdued. ABV covered well by the flavors though. Pleasant, but not outstanding.
