This bar quickly became one of my favorite places to go in West Chester this past year. A nice restaurant by day, this place is a little dark, with most of the floor taken up by tables. There are usually bands here at night, and I've actually been rather impressed with their quality. It definitely can get a little crowded with college students in here though, but I have been here plenty of times where it was comfortable. As far as quality goes, I haven't had any problems at all, even with some of the rarer big bottles. The turnover must be a lot higher than I would have expected given the crowd. Service is one area they could improve on a little. It seems that there are never enough bartenders working, so it can be a rather long wait to actually get an order in. I have not had any issues with the people working there however. Selection is really good here. A lot of hard to find beers, like a good lineup of Rogue big bottles, Arrogant Bastard, locals like Victory, and a few good ones on tap too. Not a huge selection, but rather ecclectic. I settled at "reasonable" for value, but it was tough. The usual beers are a little on the high side, but not too bad. The specials are usually real bargins, and worth going later at night for. The food was expensive enough to make me not order it, but it did look good. Spence is well worth a visit or 4.

Spense Cafe I had always wanted to visit, since I have several friends who live in WC boro I frequently spend time in the town.
Inside the restaurant, the decor is trying to be "fine dining".... seems a bit dated, but the nice paintings on the wall by a local artist redeem things. We were one of two parties in the whole restaurant on a Tuesday night, it surprised me how quiet it was.
The taps amd bottle selection were a mixed bag. Definitely better than a macro bar or a chain restaurant, but you won't find anything like Bear Republic, Founders, or Bells here. Their one "feature" tap was a great choice however, Victory Braumeister pils. Two pints really hit the spot and went with the food too. My friend who is used to drinking macros and 40's also loved it!
The service was great, as previously mentioned the restaurant was almost empty. The food was good but I could only afford to get appetizers, as the entrees were in the 20's and 30's price range! I had a bowl of the creamy crab bisque, which was very tasty. Then I ordered a lobster cheese fondue that came with pita wedges. Also very good. My friend ordered scallops with a thai sauce that he enjoyed but said he's had better.
Maybe when I have some more money in the bank I will return to try their entrees, maybe next fall when the Braumeister pils is back. Overall Spense Cafe is not a beer bar worth seeking out. Its an expensive restaurant with a few good beer choices , and strangely not a lot of diners or drinkers at the bar.

This is hands down the best beer bar in West Chester proper, i.e. the borough. Obviously Iron Hill has something on it because its a brewery, but Spence serves a wide variety of beers and Iron Hill brews are actually kind of hit or miss.
Really great space. Right downtown West Chester. Very attractive
building. The dining room is split into two halves with the bar on one end of one half. They have some pretty good bands that play there and the place can really get quite crowded and very smokey. Nice dark red walls and very cool atmosphere all around. While there food isn't the absolute best I've ever had, its certainly exceptional for any place that's being listed on this site. Many good fish dishes.
Their beer selection isn't overwhelming, but it will certainly do. they have 6-8 taps. Yeungling, Sam Adams, a couple macros, and Victory or other regional micros, e.g. Flying fish or Stoudts. Last time I was there they actually had Rogue Dead Guy on. About 30-40 bottles including several Victory, Stoudts, all the Chimays minus the Tripel, and some other Belgian/American brewed Belgians. I also saw Arrogant Bastard, DFH 60 min, 90 min, and at least 6 different Rogue bombers.
The service can be a bit slow, especially on a busy friday or saturday with a band, and things can be a bit pricey but still...
My favorite bar in West Chester. And easily the best beer selection in town.
