Split with Goblinmunkey7

Consumed 12/11/13

Appearance: Medium orange with a ton of gold - mostly hazy, with some clarity around the edges - pours with a small, white head, keeps a few wisps of a cap, leaves a few spots of lacing

Smell: Very, very strange, but that was to be expected - big, ripe passion fruit aroma - light sourness in the background, but I'm not necessarily sure I would have picked up on it if I weren't looking for it - some citrus, with some orange and ruby red grapefruit - some pale malts in the back

Taste: Yes, it's weird - some mild sourness and some mild funk - funky weirdness that kind of reminds me of vegetable broth (reminiscent of some Berliner Weissbiers) - some citrus, with a touch of orange and a touch of grapefruit peel - kind of like an old IPA, but not oxidized - finishes pretty clean

Mouthfeel: Light body, nicely carbonated, pretty clean

Overall: Lacking in both Sour and Steven

I really like the idea of a hoppy sour (or at least a dry-hopped sour). This is mildly hoppy and mildly sour, with some yeasty weirdness and some vegetable broth. Interesting, I suppose.

Thanks to angrybabbon for sharing the bottle.

Appearance: Slightly hazed dark goldish orange. Head is bright-white and drops to a tiny collar in short order. Some decent lacing.

Smell: Fruity dank pine weed. Some juicy tropical fruit. A touch of mango and grapefruit. Pale malts add a touch of toasted sweetness. Slightly bready. Pith and gummi bears. Light, slightly earthy push of yeast on the back. Mellow overall.

Taste: Old pine needles and stale grapefruit rind. Pithy bitterness with some backing citric tartness. Mildly sour, but more like dirty old fruit, or past its prime orange juice. Mildly earthy with a hint of fruit running through the back. The weird fusion of peach and tropical peach/pineapple that I know as passion fruit. Lightly tart and moderately bitter. A touch opf pale bready malt. Carries that distinct Magic Hat yeast. Warming somehow mutes everything except a faint tart edge and mild spoiled fruit.

Mouthfeel: Mediumish body with a moderate carbonation. Clean and slightly crisp. A touch dry on the finish.

Overall: You do your name a disservice sir.

An almost there beer. The "sour" IPA is something special when done right (Le Terroir), but this just carries Magic Hat blandness. There's potential.

A sour IPA? I'll check it out. No information on the bottle about what gives it a pucker.

Pours a cloudy orange hue with a one-finger head. Could the cloudiness have anything to do with yeast?

Whoa! I like the aroma, which is similar to a fresh-squeezed grapefruit. I also detect a touch of mango.

The aroma carries over, highlighting a strong mango/grapefruit background that closes with a pucker toward the back of the throat. A wild IPA?

Lingering fresh, tart grapefruit, mango and dare I say, apricot flavors. When you get past those flavors, it sort of resembles a beefed up No.9 with the house yeast and all.

A noble experiment with flavors that clash toward the back. A marriage of a sour ale and IPA. Well worth a try for the price, though I wish they had used VT Pub's yeast profile instead.

Bomber to tulip

A: Pours a hazy opaque orange color. 2 finger head disappears quickly to a tiny ring around the glass.

S: Some citrus up front, followed by yeast. It reminds me of every VPB beers I've ever had.

T: There is a very slight tartness when it first hits your tongue. From there it is very mild. I don't really get any passion fruit which is mentioned on the label. It tastes like VPBs Dogbite Bitter ESB with an out of place tartness at the beginning. The flavors do not work well together.

M: Carbonation is lacking and it is a bit thin/watery.

O: I was hoping for something along the lines of Trinity's Red Swingline, another sour/funky IPA. Unfortunately that isn't the case. I know it is popular to hate on MH and VPB in Vermont beer circles, and I wanted to give them the benefit of the doubt. But this is neither an IPA nor a sour. It misses on all counts.
