Dream Machine, an India Pale Lager or IPL, is a melding of varied visions of an India Pale Ale and an Amber Lager. Once poured, its light copper color delights the eyes and a citrusy hop aroma flows through the nose. Upon first sip, a smooth hop bitterness reveals itself – fresh, bold and slightly spicy – before subtle hints of mild maltiness appear. A big hop bite and a crisp, clean lager finish combine for a beautifully balanced beer. Take Dream Machine for a spin and let your reverie begin.

Hazy and moderately dark Amber in color, with an off-white head, the beer has a spicy hop nose, with some orange peel notes. The taste is balanced with a notable bitterness that jumps in at the mid-taste. Medium in body and some enjoyable mealtimes in the finish. Enjoyable beer. (282 characters)

Pours a clear deep golden yellow color with white head. Light pine, some citrus, a bit of cereal grains, and a hint of spice on the nose; follows onto the palate. Light bodied, good carbonation. Finishes with cereal grain and spice notes. (238 characters)

The pour was a nice Amber color with a white head. You could smell the hops off the pour that had a nice earthy aroma. The taste was smooth with a nice bitter hop bite on the back end. This beer made me wonder about hybrid styles! I like the idea of having two styles combined for some nice characteristics. This definitely had all the traits of a lager with the hop presence of an IPA. Very interesting beer! (415 characters)

12oz brown bottle, sample from the brewery.

Thin lacing on top of a pale amber brew, smells of grapefruit and melon rind with some graininess. Smooth and crisp but the body lends some slickness to the palate. Lots of hop character though this drinks more like an IPA than a lager, hoppiness doesn't fully mesh with the maltiness. Seems a bit disjointed. Not a bad sip bit could be cleaned up a bit for a lager. (411 characters)

First time trying this style, so let's give it a whirl. Popping the top this IPL smells earthy hoppy and fresh. Pours to a light orange with a minimal head that stands well. On the taste this brew is definitely more than a lager but stays with the style as the bitterness is not real pronounced but rides in the background. Good solid mouthfeel, nice thick consistency. Taste is consistent throughout with a bitter twang in the finish that is quite bitter. Not sure about this style, I think I prefer either a Lager or an IPA instead. (540 characters)

Big pile of foam in the Peroni Lager glass. Amber color. Very studly in appearance. Flowery aroma.

Rather bitter and herbal. This seems to go down pretty easily, but I think it would compare unfavorably with the the IPLs I've had from Golden Road, Garage Brewing, and Pyramid. Unpleasant aftertaste of over-steeped green tea.

I don't think Magic Hat is going to win any new friends with this. I'm still waiting for a beer I like from them, which is unfortunate since they seem to be filling the bottom cooler shelves here in San Diego as well as in Washington. From the 22 oz bottle purchased at Liticker's Liquor in San Diego. (630 characters)

Poured from bottle. Pale gold and clear with fairly good lacing. Aroma is light and fresh, florals and some lemon citrus, also a fairly nice crisp maltiness. Taste starts with some bready malts and light floral hops, crisp lager yeast, and a fairly subdued hoppiness, gets a bit tired near the finish, some stale skunky notes. Mouthfeel is light, lots of carbonation, and overall its some and easily sessionable. A decent IPL that gets a fairly boring quickly but works decently as a session option. Hops are mostly floral, with a bit of a fruity edge, and are decently robust. (577 characters)

I haven't had much from Magic Hat, but the other brews I had were more enjoyable than this one. I did not care for this. In my opinion, there is nothing that really jumped out at me with this beer; it was borderline bland. (224 characters)

Pours a hazy deep gold/pale amber producing 2 fingers of foamy, shortlived, white head that recedes to a thick island cap leaving sheets, webs & streaks of lace. Aroma is mostly grapefruit, pineapple & hints of pine in terms of hops; pound cake and little caramel malt in a background of pilsner yeast. Taste is bready, lemon zest, resinous pine, tropical fruit, lager yeast & a little honey up front through mid-sip, finishes with a prominent grapefruit note becoming drier & more bitter with a rapidly diminishing bitter, but noticeably astringent, aftertaste. Mouthfeel is medium bodied with low moderate carbonation, silky & slightly creamy with a tongue coating bitterness that becomes an astringency on the back of the tongue & palate. Not really an IPA as it is made with lager rather than ale yeast. An interesting mixture of hops & yeast as are most of these IPLs. (875 characters)

1/19...pours copper gold, high white foam, over an inch and lasting. Pleasant hoppy nose, toffee, malty. Light citrus. Clean, crisp taste, honey, floral, quick fade before the bitter closes. Good carbonation buzz. Very good. (224 characters)

12 oz poured into a pint glass

Appearance: Pours a pretty, golden copper color with orange highlights and a finger and a half of white-colored head that slowly dissolved away into a not-thin and not-thick lacing of foam that completely covered the top of the beer.

Aroma: Very nice aromas of piney, citrusy hops and bready, biscuit toasted malt, as well as some caramel, black pepper, a touch of coriander and clover.

Taste: Wow, really nice beer. Lots of piney, floral, citrusy hops up front, followed immediately by some caramel-like sweetness and finished with a lot of bready, toasted malt and a touch of brown sugar-like sweetness. Tasty.

Mouthfeel: Medium-bodied, creamy and slightly effervescent. With an ABV of 5.7%, there is no alcohol on the palate.

Overall: Wow, what a really nice beer. I wasn’t sure what to expect, never having tasted an IPL, but this is really nice. There’s a good balance between the hops and the malt. Recommended. (968 characters)

L: A nice orange tinge, thick head at least three fingers and a good lace.

S: Citrusy, and light.

T: It was ok. A litter ligher than I had hoped. Not much bite at all.

F: Sharp on the front, but gets a little flat towards the back.

O: Not my favorite, but I could drink it if it was available. (301 characters)

Not hoppy Enuff for an ipl, little bit of a metallic taste, but could be the draft equipment at this place, I would give it another shot at a different place, maybe the brewery (176 characters)

Nice amber bordering copper color with a thin head with short retention.
Delicious hoppy aroma with predominant bold notes of pine resin and grapefruit. Intense, this is likely fresh.
Hoppy flavor with notes of tobacco, lemon, pine, some grapefruit, a bit of toasted malts and grains, mild earth, Lager yeast, perfume, grass and spices. Dry and bitter aftertaste.
Light body with appropriate carbonation.
Nice IPL, clear hoppy taste. Well-crafted Lager for hopheads. Having this fresh, in my opinion this is definitely under rated. I would rather have this to almost all standard Lagers. (588 characters)

A: The beer is clear orange amber in color and has a light amount of visible carbonation. It poured with a finger high off white head that died down, leaving a thin film of bubbles covering the surface and a collar around the edge of the glass.
S: Light to moderate aromas of biscuit and cracker malts are present in the nose along with notes of earthly yeast.
T: Much like the smell, the taste is dominated by malty flavors of biscuits and crackers. There are notes of earthly yeast and a light amount of bitterness.
M: It feels a bit shy of being medium-bodied on the palate and is a little smooth with a moderate amount of carbonation. There are bits of dryness towards the finish.
O: The "IPL" name on this beer is very deceiving as it tastes nothing like an American or English IPA – it seems to be more like an English Pale Ale. Whatever style it falls into, I found it to be both drinkable and well-crafted.

I like Dream Machine, but I don't love it. It's bitter enough to want to cook with rather than drink, and as a beer for cooking, it's quite good. I've used it in the crock pot with chicken a half dozen times and it really adds something to it. (243 characters)

This beer is ok.....it doesn't stack up to the Magic Hat. The beer is lighter in body with good carbonation. The color is a hazy orangeish yellow with a creamy white head that is leaving a lace. The taste is more bitter than anything. Glad to have tried it but wouldn't go back to the well for this one. (308 characters)

12 ounce bottle into lager glass, no bottle dating. Pours slightly hazy golden orange color with a 1 finger dense and rocky off white head with good retention, that reduces to a small cap that lingers. Nice spotty soapy lacing clings down the glass, with a moderate amount of streaming carbonation retaining the head. Aromas of lemon zest, orange peel, pine, honey, cracker, biscuit, herbal, floral, grass, light pepper, and herbal/grassy earthiness. Nice and pleasant aromas with good balance of citrus/pine hops and moderate bready malt notes; with solid strength. Taste of lemon zest, orange peel, pine, honey, cracker, biscuit, herbal, floral, grass, and herbal/grassy earthiness. Fair amount of pine/grassy bitterness on the finish; with lingering notes of lemon zest, orange peel, pine, honey, cracker, biscuit, and herbal/grassy earthiness on the finish for a good bit. Nice balance and robustness of citrus/pine hops and bready malt flavors; with a good malt/bitterness balance and zero cloying flavors after the finish. Nice clean lager flavor with minimal yeast esters present. Medium carbonation and body; with a smooth and fairly crisp/sticky mouthfeel that is good. Alcohol is well hidden with minimal warming present after the finish. Overall this is a very solid IPL style. Good robustness and balance of citrus/pine hops and bready malt flavors; and very smooth and crisp to drink. A nicely enjoyable offering. (1,426 characters)

Taking the pieces and parts of lager and rearranging their proportions to more resemble India pale ale gives Dream Machine a unique flavor, feel and set of aromas that lead with hops and trail with pilsner malt.

As the lager pours golden-straw, its head builds to greet the rim of the glass, much like any well-sculpted lager would. But one whiff brings out a sharp spiciness laced with verbena herb, pepper and fragrant grass. Its initial taste is cracker-dry and quick with light bread and grain sweetness.

As the bready and sweet malt trails across the middle, it paves the way for noble German hops- Its floral taste gives slim honeysuckle and fresh-pulled tobacco with fruit that develops into a grassy overlay. Fresh-cut grass, sassafras and a stemmy, peppery bite moves in to round out the bulk of taste.

Its quick finish keeps the body medium-light but lingers with the gripping and undeniable leafy astringency of the hop cone. Its chlorophyll linger onward along with bitter resins and waining tobacco herb. (1,020 characters)

Tried one of these from a 12 oz bottle the other day.

In the glass, it's a dark amber, with lots of visible effervescence, and minimal head.

The nose was very faint, offering little more than some soft piney hops, so I didn't know what to expect. The taste wasn't too strong, following through on the pine, and offering a soft, citrusy finish, kind of like marmalade.

Carbonation and mouthfeel were both what I'd call medium--pleasant, but not overbearing.

Overall, i enjoyed it, though it's not necessarily something I'd pick up again. It's well-balanced, but doesn't really offer much I'd seek out--drinkable and enjoyable, in an interesting style, but not something I'll be keeping an eye out for. (706 characters)

I think I like this more than most do. It is pretty tame overall, but it still is an enjoyable drink. Slightly increased and spicy hopping compared to a typical lager of style. Not a totally crisp lager, but still holding a crisp enough feel and cleanness to qualify well enough. Lager smooth. Soft hop aroma. Darker than one would think for a lighter lager and also a little bigger too (at 5.7%). Big full head caps it attractively. There is a slight yeast flavor that comes through adding some complexity and is not too distracting.
Magic Hat keeps their tradition with me of solid, easy drinking beers, none of which is outstanding and few that suck. (660 characters)

Pours a dark amber almost brown with a cream colored head that fizzes away pretty quickly. The smell is full of floral notes but there is a little bit of caramel from the malt. The taste is hop forward in the beginning and then mellows out to a refreshing finish with a sweet aftertaste. The mouthfeel was nice as well. A bit average on all fronts but a nice beer none the less. (378 characters)
