Beer added by: BeerVikingSailor on 07-17-2014

Wilhelm Scream is ripe with fall flavors of pumpkin, cinnamon, nutmeg and caramel malts. Medium-bodied and the color of orange setting suns, it finishes similar to the way we finish summer: with just a hint of bitterness.

Brown in color with just a trace of fingernail thin white head covering about a quarter of the top. Good clarity. Aroma of cinnamon, nutmeg, and pumpkin. The flavor is comprised of nutmeg, cinnamon, and pumpkin, but nutmeg is definitely the lead spice. The mouth is pretty busy with all of those spices pricking my tastebuds.

Orangey caramel colored with a low head that dissolves quickly to nothing. Aroma of faint malt and pumpkin spice. Flavors of bready malt, some low squashy vegetal flavors, not offputting, followed by nutmeg notes, and some subtle cinnamon. Nutmeg rises up frequently, and emerges again in the finish. Notes of vanilla linger, punctuated with a slight peppery bite. Would like a bit more cinnamon and a bit less nutmeg, but overall a decent pumpkin beer.

Deep copper hue thin cream colored head forms and leaves behind speckled lacing. Aroma a bit of pumpkin flesh, and cinnamon, allspice, and nutmeg. Flavor has earthy spice notes, pumpkin fruit, caramelized malts to combine a decent mix of flavors even if it's a bit too spice heavy for me. Mouthfeel is medium bodied even flowing carbonation, lingering spices add a perfume like dryness that doesn't settle well with me. Overall middle of the road for the style, I'm tired of pumpkin ale and it's mid September.

2014 bottle (12 oz) with negligible sediment served in a nonic glass.

Body is deep orange-amber and clear. The short-lived head is beige with a slight orange tint.

Aroma: spiced bread

Flavor: also vry spicy but marginally below what I would consider over-spiced. Cinnamon, nutmeg and (?) ginger. Surprisingly nice finish.

Feel: lively medium-high carbonation with a near medium body.

O: a somewhat spicy but above average pumpkin beer.

[Appearance: 3.0] This one is a burnt orange with some red and brown hues mingling in the body. The head is small, neither especially tight nor loose, a tan layer of spritz somehow staying together, though not particularly well. Left on the walls of the glass is a collection of tiny spots of lacing.
[Aroma: 3.75] The emphasis in this beer is lots of spicing, though it's not overdone. It's not sweet, and there's a touch of tang to a solid note of pumpkin flesh.
[Flavor: 3.5] Tang flashes in front in the taste, with a bit of flesh before the heavy spicing comes in. It's more of an allspice than anything. It finishes with an earthy and musty bitterness.
[Mouthfeel: 3.75] The medium body is creamy up front, bubbly with a bit of spritz on the tongue but without taking too much from the body. Overall, it's fairly dry with some bitterness lingering.

12 oz bottle poured into a pint glass

Appearance: Pours a beautiful, cloudy, orange/mahogany color with an eighth of a finger of white-colored head that quickly dissolved away into a thin lacing of foam that partially covered the top of the beer.

Aroma: Some nice aromas of bready, toasted malt, imparting notes of freshly baked bread and pretzels. I also get some nice aromas of pumpkin pie spices, such as cinnamon, all-spice, nutmeg, clove, and ginger as well as some brown sugar.

Taste: Pretty good! Lots of bready, toasted malt up front, followed by strong flavors of brown sugar-like sweetness, and the afore-mentioned pumpkin pie spices, such as cinnamon, all-spice, nutmeg, clove, and ginger.

Mouthfeel: Medium-bodied and very smooth, as there is no carbonation what-so-ever. With an ABV of 5.4%, there is no alcohol on the palate.

Overall: This is a good, solid, pumpkin beer. Malty, and slightly sweet, mixed well with pumpkin and pumpkin pie-like spices. Definitely worth a drink.

Poured from a twelve ounce bottle into a snifter.

A- Thick, pillow-like head, three fingers high. Amber and brown body with robust carbonation. 4.25

S- Lots of allspice, pumpkin, sweet malt with some milk chocolate. 3.5

T- Pretty similar to the nose, allspice, pumpkin, notes of vanilla and chocolate, and a slight vegetal, squash-like flavor. 3.5

M- A bit thin in the body, but it's got a sweet, creamy quality. The finish is a tad bitter, but mostly the sweetness lingers. 3.5

It's entirely drinkable and enjoyable, but could use more body. The chocolate on the nose is nowhere on the palate and that's a bummer. 3.5

Found this newly released Pumpkin ale July 30 at local Giant Eagle store, also in their weekly circular at $8.99 / sixer

My first new pumpkin beer of the 2014 season, poured from chilled bottle into NB tulip

A: Nice pour, brownish red color, small head and minimal lacing on glass

S: OK, nothing spectacular, hints of vanilla and subtle spice, pretty light

T: Decent overall, a pretty typical pumpkin ale to the style, drinkable - nothing out of the ordinary to me

M: Fairly light, carbonation also light, not bad, but could be a bit thicker

O: A fairly solid new brew, drinkable enough and affordable...I have never been much of a Magic Hat fan, and this new pumpkin ale is not going to convert me either

Wilhelm Scream Pumpkin Ale Brewed by Magic Hat Brewing Company with an ABV of 5.4% This brew pours out a nice dark amber color with a nice white head. The look is almost brown but not quite. The smell is sweet with pumpkin and some grains. Nothing bad about this brew so far. Now for the taste it is rich with flavor. This brew has a bold flavor of pumpkin and spices. The mouthfeel is nice and crisp There is nothing over powering in this brew. Wilhelm Scream has a nice balance to it. Magic hat did a nice job with this one. I would but this brew again. Overall I'm giving this brew a 4 out of 5.

Pours a deep orange clear color with ok head and lacing. Very light aroma of pumpkin spice. Taste is pretty decent, slightly watery, with flavors of pumpkin and pumpkin pie spice. Pretty mild beer, feels slick going down and well balanced. Was expecting a little more oomph from the Magic Hat guys.

12oz bottle to pint glass

A- pours a clear deep-amber color with a ruby hue, foamy and creamy off-white head that reduces to a thin film on top, with a little bit of lace left behind

S- sweet malty base aroma gives notes of fresh pie crust and brown sugar, classic pumpkin pie spice aroma of cinnamon, nutmeg & clove with an emphasis on nutmeg

T- flavor isn't as complex as the aroma, vegetal raw pumpkin flavor, followed by cinnamon & cola flavors, no perceived sweetness at all, finishes dry with artificial cinnamon

M- light-medium body with moderate carbonation leads to a foamy mouthfeel that feels a bit to watery/thin, eventually leading to a foamy, crisp & light finish

O- if the taste followed the aroma, we would have a winner. Unfortunately it's quite bland with nothing really meshing

Poured from a brown 12 oz. bottle. Has a pretty amber color with a 1/2 inch head. Smell is mild, pumpkin, light spices. Taste is pumpkin, malts, cinnamon, easy drinking and refreshing, a bit mild on flavor. Feels medium bodied in the mouth and overall is a pretty good beer, but there are many better versions of this style.

Pours out a dark amber with a thinnish head. Smells of light spice and toasty malts. Tastes like an average amber ale with spices and maybe a touch of pumpkin? Finishes sweet. Mouthfeel is a bit slick and dull in carbonation. This is OK, but not one of the better ones.

From the 12 fl. oz. bottle. Sampled on August 31, 2014.

Nice looking pour I will say that. Orange to deep amber color and a long lasting head.

Yeah, I get some pumpkin spice on the nose and a whole lot of sweet malts.

Light t medium body.

But the taste much more bland than the aroma suggests. Some pumpkin in there maybe. Odd bitterness at the finish. I have had better. I cannot help but to wonder if Magic Hat was drawn kicking and "screaming" into brewing a pumpkin brew.

Pours a clear amber color with an off-white head that leaves little bits of lacing.

Smells of cinnamon and nutmeg along with some brown sugar.

Tastes of the typical pumpkin pie spices with a light amount of sweetness. Spices lead off with cinnamon, nutmeg, and allspice along with a touch of vanilla. A bit of brown sugar and pumpkin sweetness comes next. Not particularly sweet overall. Finishes with a bit of spice.

Mouthfeel is medium-light with a slightly crisp amount of carbonation.

Overall, this is solid, but could use more malt sweetness.

P- Wegmans in mechanicsburg, pA

A- reddish brown crystal clear color with a half finger head that has a decent lacing on the pint. more like a waistband lacing.

S- allspice, nutmeg and cinnamon come through in the nose with some nutty malts

F- salty pumpkin malts with cinnamon and nutmeg

M- light bodied with a refreshing taste but the malts dominate a tad much

O- not bad I have had much better...an average pumpkin beer

A - Orange-brown. Hazy. Short white, quickly dissipating head.
S - Sweet pumpkin and malt. A goodly dose of pumpkin spices.
T - Obviously pumpkin and spice are prominent. Malt seems a bit darker and less sweet here than some others in category.

Magic Hat Wilhelm Scream has a thin-to-medium, off-white head, a mostly clear, somewhat bubbly, reddish-brown appearance, and no lacing left behind. The aroma is of cinnamon, nutmeg, and other spices, with a pumpkin background. Taste is of all of those elements, but they come across very low key. No bitterness is detected. Mouthfeel is medium, and Magic Hat Wilhelm Scream finishes wet and a bit bland.

A: The beer is crystal clear amber red in color and has a light amount of visible carbonation. It poured with a quarter finger high off white head that quickly died down, leaving only a thin collar around the edge of the glass and delicate lacing on the surface.
S: Light to moderate aromas of pumpkins and pumpkin spices are present in the nose.
T: The taste is similar to the smell, except that the spices are more prominent—allspice and cinnamon seem to stand out in particular. No sweetness is perceptible.
M: It feels light- to medium-bodied on the palate and has a moderate amount of carbonation.
O: I found this to be an enjoyable pumpkin ale as it wasn't overly sweet and had some nice flavors of pumpkin and pumpkin pie spices.

pumpkin spices are mild, and overall this tastes watered down

Photo of AtrumAnimus
4.25/5  rDev +22.1%

this one pours a nice hazy umber color with a shallow, rich off-white head that settles quick and leaves little to no lacing down the glass.

The nose definitely has a hint of sweet roasted pumpkin to it like a pumpkin pie, some cloves and allspice are there as well with a sweet malt bed and a peppery hop tinge.

The taste is sharp and bitter with the sweetness of the malt and fruit coming on in the finish leaving a pleasant after taste and some sweetness on lips. The bitter start is very satisfying and falls off nicely and then the bitter resurfaces on the palate later.

The moutfeel is more watery than I expected and might account for the lack of a thick head.

Overall this one is quite drinkable. Not my favorite Magic Hat offering but still very good. I highly recommend it.
