Purchased as part of the Winter "Feast of Fools" twelve pack. This was the "Mystery Beer" out of the bunch. Pours a rich, deep red -- not fooling around with the color. Also a little more head than I am accustomed to getting from a MH pour. Fine, tiny carbonation. Nice malty aroma and taste--a red with some decent backbone. Good balance with the taste, too. Just enough malty sweetness, but mixed in with some roasted grains, I'm betting, which provide some more "earthy" slightly coffeeish-caramel ("burnt" sugar) taste. Easy drinking...MH feels like they are doing something a little different with their beers as of late. Something about the grain bill, maybe? More roasted tastes and feels like there might be a new yeast or two in the family. Or maybe this is just my (over)active imagination? Either may, this mystery beer is one of their better concoctions. Enjoy.

On draft at Eli Cannon's Magic Hat tasting 10/27/05.
Dark chestnut colored with a frothy beige head. Aroma is light, consisting mainly of sweet malt. Mouthfeel is smooth and full, leading to well-balanced flavors of rich malts and caramel, not overly sweet, slight nuances of toffee and cocoa, and a fine carbonation tingle in the finish. I'm not picking up the typical ringwood contributions to MH flavor here. Enjoyable beer, I'd be happy to see this one as part of the regular rotation.
Also great to meet a Magic Hat rep who's informed and excited about the product, and happy to meet people and talk about the company and the beers.
