12 ounce bottle poured into a DFH snifter. What starts as a handsome tan head quickly shrinks into a wispy skim. Not much in the way of lacing, but the auburn highlights are attractive.

Subtle nose of cocoa, vanilla and roast. Thin and tangy with a watery finish, this sweetish porter misses the mark. I'm thinking the vanilla probably accentuates Ravell's shortcomings rather than hiding them. Ratcheting up the roast to create a better foil for the sweeter elements would do it a load of good.

Poured from the tap a deep dark brown with hints of ruby hue when in the light a thin light brown head that is gone quickly atop, light roasty notes along with wood and vanilla just a trace of chocolate wich became more pronounced on the palate. To me this beer was like drinking a liquid Three Muskateers bar chocolate and vanilla nuget-like flavors but not overly sweet at least at first, there was an underlying roastiness but it didnt hinder the sweeter flavors much. This became one of my wifes new favorite beers,me I liked it alot but it did become a tad sweet after a bit but what a great dessert brew this would be.

12oz brown bottle, fresh from the brewery.

Pours a an opaque black with brown and ruby hues. A very nice tan lace crowns the beer, sticking gently to the sides of the glass and retains its appeal well.

Faint aromas of cocoa and vanilla, hints of mineral.

Smooth, with an underlying raw bittiness. Tight carbonation, paired with a quick lived citric hop bite. Initial flavors are rather aggressive, but eventually let their grips loose and allow malt flavors of tobacco, unsweetened chocolate, mild burnt / smoky flavors, and watery coffee. Very little residual sweetness. Notes of aspirin or bicarbonate. Whispers of vanilla bean (hardly as distinct or bold as I'd like). Drying finish with grain husk sitting on the palate.

An okay American Porter, but the vanilla seems much more tame in this new wave of Ravell, extremely sublte, and there's no malt backbone to provide balance.

On tap at Redbones. Wow! This has a big vanilla flavour, not sickly sweet either just lots of vanilla. Vanilla up the nose and all over the palate. The Porter character was solid but let the vanilla have its way, I would have preferred to have this with dessert and not at the beginning of the event. I am sure it would have went awesome with the pecan pie.

Bomber bottle, with freshness dating. pours a nice molassas rich dark brown, with some ruby highlights. Tan head, which dissolved quickly and left some lacing. Nose is vanilla, chocolate and some chalkyness. Nice complex flavors going on here, obvious vanilla, more subtle chocolate, cocoa, banana and caramel. Coating and smooth mouthfeel. Roasted malt. this is a Porter IMHO. Tasty stuff. Probably a g ood one to try on newbies as its fairly sweet and flavorful. Easy quaffing.

On tap at the Plano Gingerman. The beer pours a very dark brown to black color with a tan head. The aroma has a ton of chocolate as well as some roasted malt and maybe a little bit of vanilla. The flavor is more of the same. The chocolate and roasted malt are complimented by a little bit of nuttyness and some coffee notes. Medium, creamy mouthfeel and medium carbonation.

served on tap at mammoser's tavern in hamburg, ny into a pint glass.

pours out pretty much black, some slight rubiness evident in the light. creamy light tan colored head with some decent head retention and some decent lacing.

some nice roasted malts, slight creamy vanilla. gets a little sweet as it warms.

again, some nicely roasted malts, slight creamy vanilla, definatly not that noticable however. a little dark fruits with a bitter cocoa finish. becomes sweet as it warms, almost a smartie like taste?

medium bodied, good carbonation for the style.

overall, pretty decent porter, vanilla is definatly in moderation.

Poured from a bottle I picked up in trade (thanks for the extras SMason!) into a Southern Tier tulip glass.

A: Looks to be jet black in the glass but when held up to the light I see that it's actually (uh - jet brown?) super dark brown with red highlights. There's a minimal head that dissipates quickly and energetic lacing throughout.

S: I'm getting some coffee, vanilla, malt, maybe some coco and oak too.

T: Thin and disappointing. The appearance and nose led me to believe this would be thicker and more complex. Still, there's some coffee up front and a tinge of vanilla in the finish, perhaps even some black cherry in the final sips as the brew made its way from slightly chilled to warm. In that sense it sounds complex I'm sure; however, it's too thin and the hints of character I'm describing are just that, hints.

M: Thin and disappointing.

O: A thin porter with a very nice appearance and an enjoyable nose.

I love porters, and I especially love this one, but I haven't been able to get my hands on it in a while. As someone else wrote, if you see it, buy it. Not sure why it's classified as a dark ale, since the brewery calls it a porter. The vanilla isn't overwhelming at all - just enough to provide a hint of flavor and a lot of character. The vanilla-chocolate smell rises up to your nose immediately as you watch the frothy light brown head percolate. Taste is of vanilla and chocolate, and mouthfeel is smooth and crisp, although just a bit watery. Very drinkable for a porter.

Pours a very dark opaque brown with a nice foamy compact head. Great retention and lacing all down the sides of the glass as I drink.

Smells wonderfully of coffee.

Tastes like a good porter should. Lots of cafe in the malt without it being washed out or thin. Assertive, but not trying to imitate a stout. I don't get a huge rush of vanilla but I do detect some highlights of it in there. Finishes very dry with a little twang of astringency.

Mouthfeel is dead on middle of the road porter. alittle slick, a little thick.

I could drink this routinely.

This is a very tasty treat. Nice and dark color. Foamy tannish head. The smell is a mixture of malt and chocolate. The taste mirrors the smell, with the chocolate taking the lead. The chocolate taste tends to mask all other flavor. If there was vanilla in this beverage I could not detect it. A smooth texture, but a bit watery. Overall a rather good brew. Certainly worthy of searching out. Enjoy.

Appears a deep dark chocolate hue with bright ruby highlights around the edges of my Allagash chalice. Big thicket of tan khaki head forming niecely and dwindling slowly with laced around the sides of my glass. Aroma has dark malts with a hint of dark cocoa creamed with a touch of vanilla flavored creamer this has a touch of coffee notes as well. Herbal hops peak through in the nose. I have to say what a nice sampler pack they put out, the great dark lager and nice wheat IPA, with this tasty dark beer. The #9 is the clunker of the bunch, but my wife usually drinks 'em down for me without any complaints. Flavor is almost dessert like, a nice semi roasty sweet stout with a creamy vanilla finish. You could almost dip chocolate chip cookies in this and be satisfied, herbal hops are taking a back seat to sweet vanilla and dark ccocoa bursts. Mouthfeel is medium to fuller bodied carbonation is full carrying each sip through the palate nothing cloying it just works well. Overall an enjoyable beer, way better than most recent Magic Hat samplers very good mix of beers, I love the Howl, like the Encore, and I'm pretty happy with Ravell a beer I haven't seen from the Magic Hat crew in quite a few years.

Pours a dark brown with a small tan head and leaves good lacing. The smell is very light with some coffee and dark fruit present. The taste is like the smell with coffee, chocolate, and dark fruit. The m/f is light and the flavors mix Ok. A decent beer,,but not one of the better American porters on the market.

A bowling ball black base and a frothy tand head, nice...

Smells of tootsie rolls and roasted malts come off the top, as well as a mapel syrup note. Sweet cocoa nibs and a caramel flavor escort the first sip. A little above average expected flavor, with some malt bitterness on the tail end. Seems like an AP in body too, smooth and creamy, like a velvet shake. Medium light with a stickiness to it.

Overall I think I have a winner from my MHBC mixer pack.
