Notes/Commercial Description:
This beer is retired; no longer brewed.

It’s OK to be a Wee Heavy Much has been made of the ills of smoking. Jinx thinks there’s nothing wrong with it. For years, he stood strong with his peat-smoked whiskey malt mash. He held his head high when others made fun of his wee heavy physique, becoming a mainstay in Magic Hat’s Night of the Living Dead Variety 12-Pak. People said he’d never attain an Original Gravity above 15.1 degrees Plato or an ABV above 6%. He proved them wrong. Take Magic Hat into the next alellenium. Vote Jinx.

Beer review from BA Mag Oct 2007.

We always look forward to any of the Magic Hat seasonals. Jinx is within the Scotch Ale realm with a bit of peat-smoked whiskey malt in the mash. Always check under the cap for your fortune: "Seek First ... Ask Questions Later" was under our cap.

Hazed rusty brown color with a huge pillowing head that does not go quickly. Hint of alcohol and faint smoke from the first whiff of the nose. After a few more swirls of the glass, mild dark fruit, unsweetened chocolate and a buttery yeast come forth. A creamy smoothness from the heavens shows a nearly full body and slides across the mouth. The palate is plunged right into a malty rich fête with an abundant sweetness that wraps around undertones of chocolate, toasted grain and vague smoke. Unassertive hop bitterness with only a flicker of flavor. Thin buttery flavor, soft fruitiness and a chalky yeast carry the back end to the taste buds with a semi-sweet finish.

A bit of old school craft beer here, packed with flavor yet not overkill. Without a doubt a choice pick for the fall season though we would not be against Magic Hat brewing it year round.

Under the cap it says “Have a 9 on 9/9”.

Appearance: Multi-sized bubbles within the thick and creamy looking head, cling to the glass just fine. Dusty brass hue show bright through the glass.

Smell: Fruity, rustic and a tad buttery with a cookie like maltiness, a ghost like smokiness creeps from the back as well.

Taste: Layered sweetness of different malts and the yeast create a buttery, cake-like and fruity complexity. Hops are certainly there and well round at that, bitterness is at a perfect level and the flavour meld well with the malt drawing earthy herbal tones. Toned down esters appear toward the end with a light warmth from the alcohol. Thinly lined smoke flavour add a tenfold of depth as you don’t really know when it starts or if it even ends.

Mouthfeel: The smoothness is laid down quite well as it blankets the mouth its creaminess. Nearly full bodied with a moderate amount of carbonation.

Drinkability & Notes: This is one of those sip and savour brews as the complex flavours do not deter the palate from being overwhelmed yet the after taste is never-ending. Pot roast with sweet potatoes and roasted root veggies is a perfect match for this brew.

Presentation: 12oz brown. Some funky art-deco design with a blinking thing, that stares at you. "an Ale inspired by the doctrines of medieval chemists.", is proclaimed with a freshness date scored, but no valuable info of about the beer.

Appearance: Amber with a touch of haze. Nice, creamy white head with various sized bubbles.

Smell: Rich sweetness, herbal and floral aromas with a creamy smell ... almost smoke like.

Taste: First, we have to cut to the spice. It warms, with a profile akin to some Belgian Ales and their peppery characters. We have no idea what spice(s) they use, but they are used with a mastery that leaves you in deep thought. Belgian yeast? Rye malts? Who knows? After you stop thinking of the spice, an underlying sweetness fills the mouth with an alcoholic bite, mild smoke and lemony hop flavours. The aftertaste is full of dextrins and the mouth is left almost puckering with slight dryness and faded hop leaf flavour.

Notes: One of the most interesting ales brewed in New England if not in the US.
