Pours a clear chestnut brown with a decent offwhite head, and modest lacing. Smells lightly smoky but with some definite malt backing. The smoke scent is more akin to Talisker than say the smoke of schlenkerla rauchbiers. Actually a bit subdued. Upfront theirs a stab of light sweetness at which the smokiness immediately kicks in. It's omnipresent throughout, without being overbearing. Intertwined with the smoke is a tremendous earthy herbal aspect. It's all supported by breadlike, slightly grainy malts. Yeast component is there, largely mixed into earthyness. Bitterness actually achieves a rather perfect balance. Some light fruit esters fight their way through the smoke in the long finish. Mouthfeel is medium with medium carbonation. Drinkability is good.
Overall a pretty complex beer. Best i've had yet from Magic hat, though i've only had 4.
