It’s OK to be a Wee Heavy. Much has been made of the ills of smoking. Jinx thinks there’s nothing wrong with it. For years, he stood strong with his peat-smoked whiskey malt mash. He held his head high when others made fun of his wee heavy physique, becoming a mainstay in Magic Hat’s Night of the Living Dead Variety 12-Pak. People said he’d never attain an Original Gravity above 15.1 degrees Plato or an ABV above 6%. He proved them wrong. Take Magic Hat into the next alellenium. Vote Jinx.

Really poor excuse for a scotch ale, tastes more like a bock than scotch to me.

I was actually pleasently surprised, for a beer that comes from a variety pack, it held its own.

Unfortunately, I think this is the winner of the sampler of Magic Hats. I didn't expect much but I was hoping for something special. It wasn't there.

This starts off looking right in the glass. Maybe a little pale. The aroma is weak but inoffensive. The taste is an easy, starter scotch ale. Wee light on taste. There was a time when I would have preferred this, but I have a taste for these now, and they should have a lot more going on. That said, it is drinkable, and refreshing. It is much less tedious to drink that a typical scotch ale.

Overall, this is a well made brew, but not a great example of the style.

From the 12 fl. oz. bottle. Sampled on November 13, 2014.

Medium copper amber pour with a modest white head.

Malts are not as forward as one would expect in a Wee Heavy but they are there. Odd sort of musky quality to the scent. Even something akin to vanilla bean.

Medium body.

The taste has a lightly toasted and sweet malt note with a mild bitterness taking up the rear. Not as malty sweet as what I like in Scotch Ales but it is likable in it way.

This is an interesting beer, smells kind of nutty and malty... taste is like blue/gorgonzola cheese mix in hops, very interesting taste... that I kind of like. Not a beer you'd want all the time but definitely one worth speaking out once and awhile. If you like different tasting beers you should definetly give this beer a pour.

A: Pours a mahogany color with almost no head

S: Malty with a hint of smoke and nuttiness. Maybe a bit of fruitiness in there as well. A little on the weak side

T: Follows the nose, but stronger. Starts off with a hint of sweetness and a mellow smoke. Some fruity and nutty notes come in towards the end. Finishes with a light lingering smoke and a woody note

M: Medium bodied with moderate carbonation

O: Aside from a weak nose, this is a nice scotch ale with a pleasant amount of smoke. Never overwhelming or cloying, just enough to make it different. Glad they brought it back for this fall

A- 12oz bottle into a tumbler with a clear, deep amber body and a small, pinky high foamy cap. Head retention is decent as a small ring remains with a few small islands. Lacing is spotty with a few small sheets.

S- Malt drive pretty much all the way. Smokey peat comes out but not dominating the strong notes of deep caramel, toast, brown sugar and some dried red fruits from the yeast.

T- Smoke from the peat malts a bit more prominent here but a hint of chocolate opens up atop the caramel, nutty and toasted Brown malt notes. Dried red fruit, bread and some spiciness are apparent beyond the grains.

MF- Just about medium bodied with a slight oily and creamy texture. Carbonation is at a medium level and hits the palate smoothly. Smoke lingers on the taste buds in the finish with a slight bitterness.

The smoke seems to open up more and more as time goes by which is not a problem for me. I actually think the use of peat here is quite smart considering how it blends with the other malt flavors. Not for those who don't like smoke but I actually think it's one of Magic Hat's better brews in recent times.

From twelve ounce bottle in the Night of the Dead collection 2014.

Aroma is a bit fruity, malt. Pour is deep amber orange with thick white head. Head dissipates quickly, leaves a very spotty lacing. Taste is warm and mellow. Fig and datenut bread. Nice for a chilly evening.

I like this. Its good for a cold fall night. Lots of malty sweetness without being cloying. Pretty good for magic hat. Might make a better winter ale.

This one has the not-quite-clear, medium-full bodied red-brown-black I'd expect of the style. The head is a fluffy sort of tanned cap about half a finger tall that holds up, for the most part, and throws down some pretty good lacing.
This one showcases the peat without a heavy smokiness to go with it, though there's a touch inherent to the peat. There's a nice caramel sweetness as well, though a bit of dark fruits eases in as well. Something slightly too buttery in the middle does make me wonder about diacetyl, but it isn't so heavy as to ruin it. It finishes with a blend of sweetness and roast.
The body just does run into full territory, but it just skirts the edge there. It's crisp and creamy, carbonation staying even and the feel keeping to the sweeter end.

12 oz bottle. Pours dark red with long lasting, white head and nice lacing. Aroma is of caramel, cherries, hints of grassy hops and smoke. Body is medium and slightly crisp. Caramel, piney hops, smoked wood and ripe fruit fill the mouth. Finish is long and semi-dry. Not bad for Magic Hat.

Jinx brewed by Magic Hat brewing company with an ABV of 6.9%. This brew pours out a nice dark amber color with a nice white head. The smell is rich with sweetness and some grains. There is nothing bad about this brew so far. Now for the taste it is bold with caramel taste and some grains at the end. This brew has a nice balance to it. There is a lot going on in this brew. the taste is great and the color is nice. I have to say that Magic Hat Brewing Company did a nice job with this one. the mouth feel is nice for being 6.9% ABV. Overall I'm giving this brew a 4 out of 5. I would buy this brew again. This brew was great choice.

Jinx - Magic Hat Brewing Company. Poured from the bottle into a pint glass, Jinx has got a 2 finger thich off-white head, very decent lacing, and a clear, brown body.

Smells faintly like toasted caramel malts, and a teeny tiny dash of scotch. I mean minutely.

I taste the exact same notes as with the scent of this brew. Alcohol astringency is present once a full coating of the mouth is done.

Like I said, the scotch stinging is a quick appearance on the tongue before going down. A slight lingering element come with this brew.

Overall a nicely done 3.75 for Jinx - Magic Hat Brewing Company. If the bite were just slightly less "wee heavy" then I would drink this regularly. Came as part of the Night of the Living Dead sampler pack, so I doubt this brew will have a recurrence in my fridge.

A very unique scotch ale to say the least. Smokey and sweet malty and bold. Smells sweet like gummy bears, tastes like Scotch. Not to overpowering as with many scotch ales, right on the money. Pours a dark red amber with a thin head and minimal lacing. May be my new favorite Magic hat beer.

This was one of the worst beers I have ever had. It has a chemical after taste. I love all styles of beers. I can not understand the high ratings it's gotten on here.. I had to pour 8 oz out. I just couldn't drink it. I like all the other beers magic hats has. But Wow!!!!!!

Poured into a pint glass

Appearance: pours a clear copper with a good head

Aroma: toffee and caramel on the nose

Taste: not quite as sweet as I had expected. Mild caramel and toffee flavors, and just a tad smokey

Mouthful: medium bodied, not as heavy as expected.

Overall: a good solid brew, but I was expecting something closer to a scotch wee heavy.

Had a bottle of this back on 4-8-08. This beer was kind of a new style for me when I had just started trying beers. Not really know what a Scotch Ale was I proceeded to did out. The beer was rather nice shade of red with a really nice head that lasted for a little bit. The smell was a little roasted and sweet, I found it to be fairly inviting. The taste was sweet at first which faded into a nice bitter aftertaste. Overall I wish this beer hadn't been retired, I would like to try it again one day.

reviewed from notes, this one was serve in a pint glass during a magic hat tasting i had with my brother in law down at his apartment.

A - Poured a very nice ruby tinted brown with a good amount of clarity and some nice visible carbonation streaking up from the bottom of the glass to refill the smallish one finger high head of white foamy lace that had formed on top. Quick fade of this left behind just a thin film across th top and some decent side glass lacing.

S - The aroma was very thick and sweet with hint of candied sugars and caramel that were layered on top of a nice basw of malted grain and almost a nutiness that you could really start to pick up on as it warmed up a bit. There was a slight earthy and grassy note to it as well.

T - The flavor was very good actually and picture perfect example of a classic scottish ale. Started out with a decent touch of sweetness to it, being able to pick up the sugar on top of the roasted malts was a fairly easy task and this blended well into a nicely rounded sweet scottish ale. There was a very nice finish here being melded of deep earthy grains, with a good dose of caramel and grassy flavors and a nice overall bitersweet profile. I would honestly have to say not half bad at all.

M - Very smmoth and creamy this was a rather nice medium bodied ale that really stayed fairly consisitent throughout the entire session. Never bubbling over with carbonation it was just enought to keep it from getting stale or tasting like it was syrupy. Juts about the perfect conisitency.Only complaint would be that it was a little thin of the flavor.

D - Not a bad session ale at all. The flavors were strong enough to keep you intrested while never overwhelming or become too sweet to drink. Would not have been hard to throw down more then a fw of these in a sitting.

Reviewed from notes.

Poured into a snifter. The color is a moderately-dark brown color with a light head. The nose brings some dark fruits, roasted malt, light toffee, and some caramel. The taste has some dark fruits and also includes a bit of light candied toffee. Feel is nice and a bit heavy. Drinks well enough, but nothing to really pull me back for seconds.
