Notes & Commercial Description:
Beer added by: BeerAdvocate on 06-09-1998

A beer cloaked in secrecy. An ale whose mysterious and unusual palate will swirl across your tongue and ask more questions than it answers. A sort of dry, crisp, refreshing, not-quite pale ale. #9 is really impossible to describe because there's never been anything else quite like it.

12 ounce bottle poured into a shaker pint. Slightly hazy orange body with a rather short-lived head. No lacing.

Smells of apricot preserves on fresh buttered toast. The nose is the highlight; the apricot flavor leans toward the overly sweet and slightly artificial. Thankfully toasted malts and tangy wheat provide some balance to the sweetness. A touch of hop bitterness is followed by a disappointing limp finish. Now I see what all the fuss is about, I guess, but this is a pretty pedestrian beer I'm not likely to revisit.

12 oz bottle from Trader’s Joe. Pours deep golden with a long lasting white head and some lacing. Aroma is of hay, bready malt, some sour notes. Body is medium, slightly crisp. Light hops, bready and caramel malt fill the mouth. Finish is medium and dry. Not very flavorful but easy drinking brew.

#9 is always the first and last beer that I order as soon as I enter a bar or pub. The taste and aroma is leagues above any one else. And there is no hang-over feeling if I have had one too many. And usually I always have a morning head ache after a night of drinking draft beer. So I definitely appreciate Magic Hat for allowing the moment of clarity to get out of a one night situation! Slainte everyone!
