Notes/Commercial Description:
A beer cloaked in secrecy. An ale whose mysterious and unusual palate will swirl across your tongue and ask more questions than it answers. A sort of dry, crisp, refreshing, not-quite pale ale. #9 is really impossible to describe because there's never been anything else quite like it.

Sample bottle sent by Magic Hat Brewery for review

Appearance: This beer pours a a golden amber with a nice white head. A little lacing is present.

Smell: Whoa! Amazing apricot aroma. Very powerful apricot presence.

Taste: Huge apricot sweetness with a mild hop bitterness. To me it's apricot sweet in a good way.

Mouthfeel: Medium body with medium carbonation.

Drinkability: This beer is perfect for summertime. Nice crisp beer with hints of apricots. This beer has potential here in New Orleans if sold properly. I have a feeling it'll mostly be marketed to the ladies.

Very pale ale look to it. Lots of apricot and sweet smells on this one. I have tasted a beer like this before. What was it...I can't place it. It wasn't Aprihop. much more flavour in that. Apricot and fruit on the palette and almost a syrup quality to it. I would not buy too many of these but its not bad.

Served on tap at some bar. Beer served in a shaker pint. After the thread today about #9 and 9# i thought it was fitting that I had never reviewed it and I was now at a bar with it on tap.

Beer is clear and pretty dark amber. Forms a minimal head that breaks and leaves no lacing on the glass. Beer is carbonated moderately. Looks OK.

Aroma is weak. Smells like copyright enforcement, with some graininess and a mild berry smell.

Beer is medium bodied to light in body, fruit is almost entirely in the aftertaste of the beer. Very little carbonation in the mouth. This is an OK beer for a pedestrian but I'm really unimpressed. There is this grainy bitterness to it. Overall its just OK.

pours a hazy sort of apricot-orange, which I guess is appropriate. The nearly white head is pretty small and rather fizzy, but lasts better than I expected and leaves some spots of lace.
Aroma is of apricots. It's not particularly strong, but I cannot get hop or malt here. it's pleasant enough, and I'm glad it's not overpowering or too sweet.
There is a sort of apricot nectar vibe to the whole beer - not just the flavor and aroma, but the sort of sticky sweet full-bodied juicy finish - it's not particularly clean. Carb is medium-low, bitterness is pretty low, not quite managing to balance the fruity sweetness. There is a very light pale malt flavor here that was invisible in the aroma. Overall not a terrible drink by a long shot, and I suppose it's somewhat refreshing on this hot day, but I think just plain apricot juice would do just as well. In short, instead of adding something to the beer, it becomes the beer.

Poured into a pint glass.

A: Thin head which has slight lacing. White nose with a light gold, orange body.

S: The aroma has a dry, fruity smell, which is not that overpowering.

T: The taste is fruity with a dry finish. good carbonation. the finish has a spice, maybe that of clove. Tastes of apricots.

M: A tart spice, opens to a nice mouthfeel for this beer. Nice lingering taste.

D: Not the type of fruit beer I am typically looking for, but very good. I would go back to this beer, but it was a bit thick and carbonated on the way down,

A beer haiku for you:

"Apricot? What the...
Pleasant surprise, however.
Willing to have more"

Not what I had expected: after the initial shock wore off, and I realized this wasn't quite a lambic, it was actually pleasant enough and more than drinkable on a hot Florida afternoon. Serve it cold!

Cheers!

Poured into a standard pint glass, from a large bottle (750 ml), served chilled from the fridge.

(A) Clear brew with a rusty, orange hue. The head was about a finger or so, solid white, which vanished pretty quickly.

(S) I get the hops right away, but there is also a fairly prominent sweetness (which I find odd at first, but is actually pleasant).

(T) The label wasn't misleading (not quite pale ale)....the hops are pretty mild and the sweetness in the smell is also prsent in the taste. It takes the edge off the normal hops bitterness. I also detect apricots in the finish (the dried variety).

(M) Normal...but based on the initial appearance, I was expecting it to be a bit thin, which is is.

(D) I like IPA's but they can be pretty bitter, so I usually only have one or two at a time. This version is more drinkable, if you are planning on downing a few at a BBQ, etc.

Overall, I liked this offering from Magic Hat. If I am craving a true IPA, then I would go elsewhere. But, #9 is a nice variation and it is worthy of my money.

Picked up a 6er at Central Market in Plano, TX. (My bottles say 5.1% ABV)

A - Golden, copper in color. Looks like apricot...

S - I would say malts up front follwed by more of a alcohol scent and zero hops. (I was expecting hops thinking this was a pale ale...stupid me)

T - Smooth refreshing, and just coming home from the gym I was thirsty but wait...Apricot at the end? NOOO! I had no clue this was a fruit beer. If there was no apricot, I would buy this beer again and again but that apricot ruined it for me.

M - Mouthfeel was decent, like I said refreshing. I was thirsty and it was smooth and had nice medium carbonation.

D - Pretty high. It would be extremely high if there was no fruit taste but it IS a fruit beer and my bad that I didn't read before I bought.

Overall, if you like the taste of apricot an are looking for a poundable fruit beer, this is the one for you. I personally am not a huge apricot fan especially in my beer.

Pours a straw golden golden with a rich foam head with nice lacing, head dissipated quickly. Overwhelming smell of soap with hints of apricots and citrus.

Taste was subtle hints of apricots and citrus, hidden under a blanket of malted, nearly unhoped beer. No hint of alcohol, but a nice tang hits the tongue. What this beer lacks in depth, it makes up for in drinkability. This is a great summertime beer.

12 oz bottle purchased at ABC Fine Wines & Spirits in Daytona Beach, FL. Freshness date of June 2010. Review from notes taken at the time of tasting.

A: pours a copper amber gold with a ring of foamy white head and threads of lacing on the pint glass.
S & T: perfume, candy, pale and crystal malts, apricot, moderate hop bite in the middle, hollow and metallic fruit sweetness, tartly malted finish.
M: malty, astringent, lightly spiced, dry and lingering fruit flavour.
D: a solid example of the genre. The "not quite pale ale" label should be dropped to encourage style-appropriate ratings. Pretty decent, quaffable fruit beer, but one is enough, and I probably won't buy again.

12 oz bottle. I'll always be thankful to Magic Hat because they were one of my "gateway" beers out of the land of BMC.

Pours a clear light copper with a decent white head. #9 is a good solid beer that has nice fruit tones with apricot being quite present throughout. I've also found this beer to have a slight hint of funk to it. Drinks easy on a summer day and makes for a good session beer.

A: Pours a clear golden/orange color. At first, a bubbly white head rises to a finger, but recedes to nothing in a second. No lace to speak of.
S: Artificial apricots, sugar, fake sweetener. Light pale malt and grain. The little hops that are present are very soapy and dishwater like.
T: Grainy pale malts. Prickly apricot that tastes like artificial flavoring. Very sweet, and kind of like perfume as well.
M/D: A light body and prickly carbonation. Not hard to drink for what it is. Though I am board, and want something else have way through.

There is a rough, prickly character throughout that is odd. Part carbonation, part apricot I guess. This seems very artificial, like fruit syrupy was added. I am not a fan. Not something I would recommend.

Appearance: Apricot in color, translucent, decent carbonation with slight, white head

Smell: smells very sweet and of apricot

Taste: Way too sweet for me. There is not enough "pale ale" flavor for me and this beer is full of apricot flavor.

Mouthfeel: average mouthfeel, fizzy due to carbonation, almost watery

Drinkability: Not very, it is far too sweet and doesn't deliver any other flavor than apricot.

I wouldn't recommend this beer to anyone. I feel it was a poor take on a flavored pale ale. If you're looking for a good apricot beer, go with the Aprihop by Dogfish Head.

22 oz bomber into a pint

A - Pours a light golden color. Showing a bit of haze, but I would say its proteins and not yeast. Head formation is solid, bright white, hangs around to about 2mm.

S - A strong, dry fruity nose. A fruit that I have difficulty nailing down. Certainly to the sour side, with orange, grapefruit notes present. No hopping detected.

T - Starts off with the same fruity sweetness detected on the nose. Dryness prevents it from being too cloying. Gets more balanced via some yeast spicing, more dry notes. Cloves come to mind. Hopping is not detected in flavors. Finishes with a light, somewhat bitter fruit note.

M - Moderate body - carbonation is stronger than the beer - slightly biting. Finishes mostly clean, just a bit of sugar left on the tongue.

D - Very easy drinking. ABV is quite sessionable. Certainly a summer beer, refreshing. Can be a bit filling at times.

i found this beer to be "different" it says not quite pale ale and wow were they right!!! I am a big fan of pale ales and the bartender recommended this one on thier pitch "not quite pale ale" so i tried it.
A- appearance was nice golden with a decent head ,about a finger and a half, it disappeared quickly though but has a nice lacing on the glass.
S-apricot on the nose some malt no bitter hues ,also smelled something i cant place, like a hint of perfume almost?
T- tasted all malt with the same perfume i smelled , i did not like the taste one bit!! I think it may have been the "not quite pale ale" slogan that did it, i was expecting a less bitter(and it was) lighter(and it was)than an i.p.a. but i think the taste got lost in albuquerque.
M-medium carb, medium to light body
D-didnt like the product so drinkability suffered!!!!

Appearance - Pours a golden clear color with about two fingers of head. Decent lacing is left on the glass with relatively quickly receding head.

Smell - Apricot, light hops, wheat, slight funk.

Taste - Similar to the nose though not as strong in apricot flavor as expected. Somewhat bland to be honest but seriously, not as bad as many people are making this out to be. Perhaps I'm just in a fruit beer mood?

Mouthfeel - Lighter bodied, medium carbonation.

Drinkability - I could put a few of these back in a sitting. Not overly sweet or overpowering in any way which to me makes this a decent session beer on a hot summer day while out on the patio. Have been wanting to try this for a while and is not as bad as the reviews make it out to be.

Poured from a 12 oz. bottle into a pilsner glass.

A: Pale, unimpressive yellow. High clarity, no head to speak of. Very little lacing.

S: Mm, it smells very nice. Fruit, apricot definitely among them, dominates the nose. Rather one-dimensional, but that one-dimension is very nice.

T: The obvious fruitiness is belied by a mild - not entirely pleasant - bitterness, and a light grain pervades the background. Vaguely watery and the aftertaste is briefly fruity, then empty.

M: Light, somewhat bitter, carbonated. Fruit initially coats the mouth, but fades quickly.

D: High. This tends to be a very accessible beer that appeals to a large audience, even if it doesn't to me.

Poured from the brown bottle into a clear pint glass. Best buy date of May, 2010 on the back label. Under the cap it says "Would you be interested in selling?"

A - Pours a cloudy orange/yellow color topped by a fluffy eggshell white head. Decent head retention and spotty lacing.

S - I can certainly smell the apricots in this...that's pretty much the dominant aroma, not much else going on in the nose.

T & M - The apricots are there to be sure, but it's balanced with light malt and just the tiniest bit of hop bitterness toward the end. Tastes almost "earthy" to me. Light bodied, and kind of has a coarse texture to it.

D - To be truthful, I think I was expecting something a little different when I bought this. It's neither a pale ale as it proclaims on the label, nor really a fruit beer in my opinion. Ok, maybe it's a fruit beer, but the apricot is just throwing me off. In its defense, it does seem to get better as it warms. Not bleh, but I won't probably buy it again in the future.

The bottle cap reads, "if Jerry were here, we'd buy him a beer".

This beer pours a golden orange-ish color with a thick white head that quickly disappears and leaves a light lacing. It has a yeasty but fruity smell. This is a beer that tastes good anytime but especially during the warmer months. It's more refreshing than filling. It goes down smooth, there's no bitterness only a fruity (almost apple like although it's actually apricot) flavor.

Magic Hat #9 was left at my house after a party. this seems to be the ubiquitous high school/college party girl drink for some reason.

#9 pours a very clear yellow with tons of bubbles, but only a very slight head that soon reduces to nothing.

smells are initially very fruity. a very sharp apricot taste rules. some slightly bready malt aromas linger.

the maltiness does come out a bit more in the taste, but unfortunately, it is drowned out by the overbearing fruit. some breadiness, doughiness is most apparent. the hop note is slight, yet sharply floral, and easily missed.

this brew delivers a blast of apricot with each sip along with a sick-sweetness that makes it hard to drink.

mouthfeel OK. well carbonated, and does a good job of scrubbing the tongue after each sip, leaving hints of bready malt(more apparent in the aftertaste than in the actual taste). ends slightly dry.

i had one or two of these the other night, after a few Torpedoes of course, and thought it didn't taste too bad. upon fresh review, i find this beer to be difficult unless you really like the apricot taste, or are a fan of fruit beers that are more fruit than beer.
