Notes & Commercial Description:
Beer added by: BeerAdvocate on 06-09-1998

A beer cloaked in secrecy. An ale whose mysterious and unusual palate will swirl across your tongue and ask more questions than it answers. A sort of dry, crisp, refreshing, not-quite pale ale. #9 is really impossible to describe because there's never been anything else quite like it.

Consumed 1/12/12

Appearance: Golden orange, small white head, leaves a surprising amount of lacing

Smell: Perhaps the best thing about this beer - fresh, juicy apricots - a base of sweet, pale malts underneath - fruity and sweet - not a lot of depth, but good for a fruit beer

Taste: Sweet, syrupy apricots - a little too sweet for my taste - definitely apricots, but some peaches/nectarines, too - some light citric bitterness - pale, grainy malts

Mouthfeel: Medium bodied, somewhat sticky, an adequate amount of carbonation, but I would like this crisper

Overall: For what it is, it's good

Magic Hat #9 was one of the first craft beers I ever had, so I guess I have a soft spot for it. I can't say I appreciate it as much as it did about 5 years ago, but it's worth a try. Any fruit beer that isn't a complete disaster should get bonus points.

Review from notes.

A: Pours clear orange/amber color with a foamy white head that fades quickly, leaving behind little bits of thin lacing.

S: Can smell the apricot right away and a little bit of sugar. A little bit of grainy malt.

T: The fruit flavor comes forward again, and masks any sort of malt or hop flavors.

M: Light to medium bodied with moderate carbonation. Crisp and easy drinking.

O: I remember when this was a go to beer, years ago. Now, it just doesn't excite me. I can see why people who "don't like beer" gravitate towards it though.

Pint glass pour. Looks nice. The head subsided pretty fast, but it boasted with promise. Nice clear honey glow to it. Some lacing occurring.

Dried apricot, citrusy hop, a little sugary. Confection sugar, gummi candy, maybe corn syrup...

Peach and apricot. Ripe. Minty. The hop that complemented the nose is much more reserved. The bitterness levels are weaker. Plays out like a soda. The pale malt is minor, also. A little wheaty, with some strange preservative flavor. Sweet and candied.

Fizzy and swishy mouthfeel. A bit too sweet and thin. Burpy bubble double cola--sorry, got carried away there for a second.

Hadn't had one in 2+ years. Not a regrettable decision, but there's a reason why I've steered clear.

Free beer tonight.

A - Straight from the bottle, gave it a 4 for benefit of the doubt.

S - A bit of fruity/floral hoppiness playing around some moderate apricot/peachy scent and some grainyness.

T - Lighter pale malt backbone with a top layer of apricoty fruit flavor. Taste is sweeter and somewhat artifical but short of cloying or off-putting for me. A short wave of mild hop bitterness leads into a sweeter, wet finish with traces of apricot lingering.

MF - Has a refreshing crispness attribute. Fairly light-bodied. Thin in character which makes it drinkable. Carbonation is lively but not overdone. I did not get the dry finish in this one at all.

O - This is perhaps a bit above average for fruit beer category. Mostly one-dimensional. The apricot flavor is sweet but not too much. I would not go out of my way for this, and it's not really worthy of being a flagship beer, but it's decent. I can see it working better on hot days for sure.
