Pours a light copper with a thick off-white head that retains nicely. The aroma has big citrus and piney hops upfront, along with some vanilla and caramel, toast and a touch of alcohol. The flavor has bright citrus and pine notes initially, along with some caramel and toasted bread, vanilla, tropical fruits and a slight alcohol presence. The mouthfeel is medium and drinkability is excellent for a DIPA. Overall a very nice offering from magic hat, too bad it's a one-off.

A new release now on tap at Cole's here in Buffalo, poured a clear light bronze with a nicely formed sticky white head. This Imperial IPA is aged in oak and it shows thru in the nose and palate vanilla-like oak intertwined with citrus and lightly toasted malt in the nose. The oaky flavors are even more prevelant flavor wise starting out with a whiskey a vanilla flavor combo melding into big tangerine, citrus hop character that lingers well into the finish. The alcohol is very well hidden the beer glides down easy with no burn to speak of.A cool new release from the hippies in Burlington not over the top hop wise but plenty enough to go around and the oak gives it an interesting dimension.

So, Magic Hat can do some things right. This was in the Night of the Living Dead variety pack. It was a cloudy orange/amber with a thick head and some decent lacing. A floral aroma, as well as some grapefruit. Very bitter up front, which smooths out after a while. Some grapefruit. Maybe a touch too bitter. Still, a nice, assertive beer. I'm enjoying my third one as I write this.

12 oz brown bottle with a freshness date on the back label. Under the cap it reads "Get Boxed at the Philthy Ox".

A- Expected great head retention from the hops, clear pale golden amber color.

S- Very fruity, mild solvent alcohol, citric hops(grapefruit) and a dash of buttery yeast character in the nose. Typical aroma of the super IPA ... not bad at all.

T&M- Big harsh herbal hop, undertones of grapefruit and pine are within. Medium bodied and a slick semi-crisp mouth feel. Aspirin? An other wave of harsh herbal flavor, some maltiness, the trade mark Magic Hat yeast funk, and a hint of nutty yeast.

D- Clearly the use of Columbus hops surpassed my taste threshold, caustic to my taste buds. I'm a veteran with this hop ... its high-alpha garbage just like Amarillo. Its like cheap paprika ... just because you like it does not mean you can use as much as you want. Leave this one as an experiment please.

Night of the Living Dead Variety Pack

Cap: And no Oompa-Loompas

Pours a crystal clear apricot color with a faint and fading off-white head.

Aroma is full and rich and hoppy - mostly pine with some notes of flower and orange peel.

Full and creamy mouthfeel leads to a very piney hoppy burst of flavor all at once. Finishes very dry and crisp. No malt base to speak of. Flavor turns from pine to citrus and then heads right to bitter orange peel, leaving an acrid flavor in the back of the throat, almost medicinal. ABV makes itself known with a slight burning sensation around the back of the tongue and cheeks.

If you like piney hops, you may like this beer. I prefer more complexity from malts mixing in, and would like some diversity in the hop profile. And less burning rubber. Seems to me to just be HiPA with rubbing alcohol added. I'm going to the MH web site now to vote it down.

Got this one in the Magic Hat Summer Variety Show pack as the "mystery beer."
Pours a nice shade of orange with a bit of head clinging to the glass. Smelled lovely, hoppy, with a bit of oak perhaps (there's something there beyond the hops, and I'm going with oak). Strong hoppy flavor with more of the oakiness. It's strong in the alcohol content, which with the oak is reminiscent of almost a bourbon flavor. My only complaint is that the hops tended to linger a bit on the roof of my mouth, but that's not too much of a complaint now, is it?

AP: Golden Amber color, lively, created a rather thick and frothy cream colored head that measured two fingers high, leaving some sticky but spotty lacing behind.

Nose: Spicey>Herbal hop dominated.

Taste: A VERY tart and bitter hop hit at first (cringe!) then it gets spicey and floral with a mild herbal effect. Finishes with a bitter and earthy hop bomb. Bitter is the key word here.

MF:Medium body, feels rather substantial and thick with a strangely smooth effect.

DA: A very unbalanced bitter-hop dominated brew (even for a DIPA) The bottles I have was just the right amount.

Gotta love Magic Hat's mystery beers...even if they're not all that, it's fun. Got this in their Night Of The Living Dead variety 12-pack, and along with Jinx, #375 was the highlight of the four offered (others were the always enjoyable Circus Boy and the weak #9).

Pours a big fluffy head that lasts. Color is a golden/copper with zillions of bubbles marching in formation. A great looking beer that leaves great lace splotches.

Pretty much all hops in the nose, but not too intense. Perhaps a little one-sided, but definitely an enjoyable and assertive aroma.

Big piney hops hit the tongue immediately. This instantly impresses as a big, robust, juicy double IPA. Good kick to it, with enough malty heft to help balance the pretty insane bitterness. The finish is akin to sucking on an orange or grapefruit peel. Puckery, sour, bitter. Perhaps the aftertaste is a little much. I found it way more infuriating the first bottle, but a day later I had this second bottle and it didn't seem as crazy. Still, it detracts from the flavor itself, so I dropped the taste rating from 4.5 to 4.

Mouthfeel is full and creamy, just the way a double IPA oughta be.

Fresh, sticky hops in abundance. The best Magic Hat offering I've had so far.

Had this at Clark's Ale House cask ale fest, and it was the clear winner. Very juicy hops taste-must be a variety of hops and very fresh. I took only two samples to leave some for others. C-hop aroma, and orangey colour with detergent like head. Satisfying mouthfeel.

Nice to see Magic Hat include a DIPA in a sampler, its too bad it wasn't a little better. I'm not sure I'd even classify it as a DIPA, it could pass for a ballsy IPA. The beer looks nice with a light amber boby and some lacing. Smells of piney grapefruit, not great but somewhat promising. The tast just doesnt deliver quite enough. Alcohol is evident and the bitterness is harsh. The hops have an odd fruity quality to them, like there was an english yeast (ringwood-esque) strain used. It's not bad, but I wouldn't get it again.

Pours a hazy golden orange with a foamy white head. Smell is dominated by hops, with some fruit notes mixed in. Not overpower, but inviting. The taste is fruit/sweet upfront followed by a huge hop bouquet. The aftertaste stays consistent and has a small hop bite. The bitterness is not over powering and is balanced well with the flavor. The mouthfeel is a medium light body with good carbonation and good flavor. This one is a good IPA, strong in flavor but balanced well for the beer. I would recommend this one to all IPA fans. Enjoy.

Out of a living dead sampler 12 pack.
This is a big strong beer, with a not so subtle 7.5 abv. As a beer to have more than a few at a time, this may not be the best choice, but as a nice change from the others offered in the sampler 12, this is a great choice, perfect for an autumn afternoon.

Amazing head retention, copper color, lacing, big abv...classic double IPA

12 oz. bottle. Drink by Jan., so hopefully 2007. A hazy orange/amber colr, with a lot of carbonation. Thick white fluffy head has great retention, and leaves some good patches of sticky lace as it disappears. Citrusy, floral, earthy, and herbal hop aroma. Malt character is pale for a DIPA. Finishes with earthy, spicy and herbal hops, with a touch of citrus. Almost seems a bit musty. Some fruit comes through as it warms, such as apricot and banana. Seems more like an IPA. Seems to lack the big malt and hop character. Medium body, and still a decent brew.

12oz. bottle into Imperial pint glass

A: Amber with a big, sticky white head.

S: Mostly hops here, with vague malt. Hop aroma reminiscent of grapefruit.

T/M: Toasted malt with a strong hop bitterness in the finish. Hops reminiscent of grapefruit again. Nice body.

D: Too highly hopped and highly alcoholic to session.

Appears a transparent orange toned amber with a small, velvet, white head. The head never really fades out. Plenty of lacing is left around the glass.
Smell is of a bubble gum-like sugar, light wheat, sweet, & citrusy hops.
Taste is of earthy, mild citrus, fruity, with light caramel, and corn syrup.
Mouthfeel is of yeasty, earthy, and sligtly spiced hops.
Overall, it's just not too complex and it comes accross as being a bit dull.

Poured nice dark amber, slightly slick hops are big on the nose. Some notes of malt, but not much. Huge punch of overly bitter hops at first, then a lipsmacking bitter aftertaste with not much flavor- expected green hop flavors, mabe some citrus from the aromas but none to be had- just straight-up bitterness on the loose wreaking havoc. Finished slick, almost sticky on the tongue. While i like my hop bombs, i like some flavor too which was absent here.

This beer is a real roller coaster. At firststip it is extremely bitter with from what i could tell is tons of cascade hops rushing to your pallet. However right after the sip there was almost no taste at all. TIs good to see Magic hat jump into the double IPA ring however i think this does need a little tweaking if they do bring it back. Definetly worth a try however.

Many thanks to phnphilly for giving me this beer out of his raffle winning. This is an odd one. As a DIPA I have big expectations for it. Coming from Magic Hat I have no idea what to expect. Their beers are all over the map. It is certainly not bad but it is not the as smooth and flavorful as I hope from a DIPA. Despite the harsh scratchiness I found many enjoyable attributes. Here's the breakdown:
Served in my snifter.

Appearance: Pours a deep golden orange color with small head and moderate lacing.

Smell: The aroma is dominated by orange peels. There is also a hint of vanilla and a strong alcohol presence alongside other fruits that warm the nose. A bit thin and too much alcohol but very decent.

Taste: The scratchy nut characteristic in this beer reminds of the harsh Hedonism from Legacy. The flavor is lacking a malt backbone. It is piney hop water with yeast and vanilla nut character added in as well. The acidic aftertaste is interesting but not quite pleasant.

Mouthfeel: a light chalky feel this gets an "~eh" from me.

Drinkability: It's not that I wouldn't drink this beer. It is not offensive it is simply not anything special in it's league IMO. I really prefer the HiPA and would rather a few of those.

Hope this is helpful.
Cheers!

12 oz. bottle from night of the living dead variety 12 pack.
Awsome orange color , looked great in the glass. head fades fast.
nice hop nose. I kept thinking that this could have been damn good if the ale underlying the hops had more punch, instead of an average, drinkable session ale that somebody dumped a barrel full of hops into.still, not bad.

Pours a very clear, bright amber (as in the resinous jewel substance -- just like that) with a quickly dissipating head. Very piney aroma, with a bit of citrus, but it mostly comes across like a cleaning agent of some sort. Acrid bitterness to start off with. This morphs into a different kind of acrid bitterness. I'm not sure how else to describe it. The finish is like pine soap. Mouthfeel is fine, but with taste like I just described, who cares? This is a failure of a beer -- the acidity is not attenuated by malts, the aroma hops seem to be a poor choice, and the resulting brew is some how both too sweet and too bitter. Blegh.

Poured from a 12oz. bottle into an imperial pint glass.

A: The beer is a cloudy gold color, with a thin but foamy white head that fades slowly and leaves a thick lace on the glass.

S: The aroma is very hoppy with hints of caramel and citrus.

T: Very well-balanced combination of hops, citrus sweetness and caramelized malt. Each of the flavors are strong but are harmoniously blended. There’s a big hops bite as you swallow and a sweet after-taste that follows. The hops become a little bit more dominant as the beer warms.

M: Very crisp & smooth, medium carbonation, medium body, mostly clean finish but there’s a slight stickiness.

D: Quite tasty, easy-to-drink, not-too-filling, a good beer to drink a lot of, so it would be nice to see Magic Hat make this one a year-round beer or at least a seasonal.

Thanks lpayette for this one too... first magic hat review (weird)

Appearance: Hazy orange amber with a quarter finger of white head. Looks like it has heavy carbonation, but that and the head leave quickly.

Smell: Sweet fruits... like the standard grapefruit mix with an excellent malt base. There's some very nice bready notes too, but they aren't as sickly sweet as in some other magic hat brews.

Taste: The hops overpower the malts in an odd fruitish way and bring out the bready characteristics a little too much. It's ok, and doesn't taste bad, but isn't as amazing as many dipa's running around.

Mouthfeel: Great carbonation and consistency, but the bitterness is profound and unbalanced with the taste.

Drinkability: Doesn't quite hit the spot, and not a first choice when going for a nice dipa.

Cloudy golden color with small head, but decent head. Just expected more from a double IPA.

Smell is a strong grassy/floral/citrus hops. Some malt.

Taste is strong fruity hops. Grapefruit. The consistency is a bit oily in the mouth, a bit sticky. Very hoppy. The hops gradually add a spiciness on the aftertaste.

Interesting.

From their mix pack (can't remember what that's called) Pours golden/light brown in color. Smell is a bit weak. Taste is pretty nice, bitter citrusy with a malt background, different from other pale ales I've tried. Overall it's pretty good, but I can't get really excited about it. I really can't nail what it is but I know I've had better.
