Poured from a 12oz. bottle into a US tumbler pint glass.

A: The beer is a deep black color with a thin off-white head that fades quickly and leaves a thin lace on the glass.

S: The aroma is of chocolate, coffee, smoky malts and a little bit of hops.

T: The flavors of chocolate, espresso, and roasted malt are what dominate the taste. There’s a little bit of hops in there. The after-taste is chocolaty and faintly sweet. It tastes remarkably similar to their Batch #373, hmmm?

M: Crisp and very smooth, medium body, medium carbonation, finish is slightly sticky.

D: Very tasty, goes down very easily, only slightly filling, I’ve gotten the feeling that the “mystery beer” offerings from Magic Hat have been attempts to experiment with different in hopes that they get a beer that will get over well enough for them to produce on a regular basis. I’ve had several beers from Magic Hat and my 3 favorites have been Batch #375, Batch #373 and now Batch #376, everything else has been mediocre at best.

Pours with a frothy, initially two-finger thick, light brown tan colored head that sits atop a beer that is simply black; though it shows a brilliantly clear, chocolate brown hue as I pour it into my glass. The aroma has a nice leading roasted malt character that actually has a touch of nuttiness to it. Aromatic notes reminiscent of lightly sweetened black coffee join a certain burnt grain husk character and even a bit of chalkiness. A touch of chocolate and the rich dark grain sweet maltiness add some roundness to the more dominant roasted notes. This definitely has a crisp burnt grain character that I would expect from a proper Schwarzbier.

The beer has a dry, burnt acidity to it up front, but this quickly moves to a soft dark malt sweetness, which ultimately is the more dominant note. The finish has a touch of drying character to it; this is mainly a combination of hop bitterness and a roasted, burnt acidity and bitterness. This has a fullness to it in the palate that is certainly contributed by the malt sweetness here. The malt sweetness is so well balanced by the roasted character that the beer is almost not sweet, yet definitely has a perception of malt sugars.

This beer is quite the nice tipple for this chilly night; not too thick (so it is quite quaffable), but it has enough meat to it to be chewy and engaging enough on this chilly night. I could certainly quaff a couple pints of this brew, before I know it my glass is empty. This is definitely my sort of Schwarzbier; chewy with lots of roast malt character.

Nice two-finger beige head which lasts throughout the tasting. Leaves a nice ring of lace on the glass after every sip. The beer is just shy of black, very bright light can shine through.

Thin smelling dark malts: attractive and subtle

Taste is similar to a light porter with a moderately high level of hops. Or, if you wish, a souped brown ale. Thin in body, but the flavor makes up for this. Strong black patent and chocolate malt flavors that well-counterbalanced by a high hop bitter spice.

I really enjoy this beer. Those who prefer heavy beers will be disappointed with this one. Still, this is a big flavored beer that is very refreshing.

On-tap at the Blue Tusk... God Bless the Blue Tusk.

The first guy told me it was a porter, that didnt taste right. The next guy told me is was a black beer - right on. Its a little different than the few black beers I've had. The taste was a smooth, nutty chocolate, almost like a chocolately nut brown. I've never really had a beer quite like this before, so I recommend trying it. Amazing it aint, but I could drink a lot if I was in the mood.

This was a 12oz bottle in the Ship of Fools variety pack. It was a dark brown color with a small coffee-colored head. It had a chocolate, dark fruit aroma. The taste didn't live up to the aroma. It was rather bland, some cherry, a little bread. I felt it to be a little too sweet, and not a beer I'd want a lot of.

Pours a clear brown color with a decent white foamy head.

Aromas are dusty, caramel like, and of sweet cereal grains.

Taste is sweet up front, and with an overall creamy character from the malts. Carbonation is noted on the mouthfeel, and the finish is crisp and a bit smokey.

Mouthfeel is pretty good. Carbonation is about right, and quite lively.

Drinkability is very good. This is an easy drinking, enjoyable, and tasty Schwarzbier.

Thanks for the bottle Metallitone1!

Under the cap: "Buff Your Inner Glow"

Super-ultra dark brown shot through with ruby and caramel when held up to the light. Head is light brown and fluffy. That nice head dies down pretty quickly.

Aroma is nutty and toasty, with light hints of chocolate and a fairly generous smokiness.

Flavor is abundant smokiness, though not at all overbearing. Some dark fruits, tootsie roll and espresso notes show up way in the background. The finish brings an abrupt bitterness...the smoky, toasty flavor is nice and riding on your tongue, then WHAM-O, it's stopped in its tracks. Plus the mouthfeel is pretty thin, bordering on watery.

It's not all that different from their Jinx beer, but not as good as that. Kinda boring beer, but nothing undrinkable or awful either.

Magic Hat- Batch 376

Appearance- Dark ruby/ black with a small weak head.
Smell- Nice smokey malt with a roasted coffee/ cocoa and hop tinge.
Taste- Vanilla caramel with a light roasted coffee and cream flavor. Light but nice and tasty.
Mouthfeel- Watery, light. Not as big and chewy as I'd like it to be.

Overall- A nice easy session beer. My wife's favorite from all the samples we had before and after the tour.

On the "Rave" or "Grave"
I'll go with "Rave"

Review is from the February 2007 issue of Beeradvocate Magazine.

Part of the Mystery Beer series, with hopes of being brewed again. Dubbed a Black Lager. Underside of the cap reads "Tag! You're it." Great, we're it again.

Two shades from pitch-black, pours out with a healthy tan froth that has no problem sticking around. Smells of dark chocolate and freshly ground espresso beans, with a very clean nose. Very crisp and smooth, in a medium body. Clean, malty palate. Mild, dark malt character throughout; suggestions of mild roasted coffee, faint milk chocolate, light charcoal and burnt sugar. Peppery, herbal, hop flavor in the back--with a marked bitterness that shows balance--couples with some of the burnt malt fl avors and cleans house towards the semi-dry finish.

Spot-on for style, and more proof that dark beers can be just as drinkable as anything else out there. Who knew that this brewery, which primarily pumps out ales, can brew good lagers as well. An obvious pairing is with chocolate, but this one went really well with grilled chicken slathered with mole sauce.

"Hocus Pocus...I Can't Focus"

Dark brown - clear mahogany when held up to the light - the head is thin and creamy. Clean blackened roasty malt aroma. Malty flavor with a hint of roasted coffee beans - less burnt than it smells. Clean with a modest residual sweetness. Smooth, medium, and drying in the finish.

Pretty charred in its roasted maltiness. Nothing wrong with this take on a schwarzbier.

This was the "mystery beer" in the Feast of Fools 12 pack. The bottle says 3/4 pint of ale, but the beer itself tastes more like a porter. Pours a dark color, no red highlights and no light gets through the glass. The head is tan, very small and requires a vigorous pour to keep one up. Lacing is moderate. Didn't notice much with the aroma. The taste was pretty good, I would be comparing it to other porters more than the few Schwarzbiers I have tried. Taste was smoky, malts predominate but with a nice crisp finish. This beer goes down very smooth. Mouthfeel was rich enough, certainly nothing thin or watery. No unpleasant aftertastes. Drinkability is good. Would go nice with cheese or as a slow sipping session beer.

Dispensed from a 12oz bottle into a pint glass. Pours a not quite opaque black. Hints of dark purple are visible through light at the bottom of the glass. A nice, tan head forms with nice retention as well.

Aroma is a burnt chocolate and coffee. Some fruity hops are also present in the nose.

This is just a nice beer overall. The taste is very much like a porter. Some burnt toast and coffee are there. Nice and bready as well. A very drinkable beer. Purchased this in a mix 12 pack. Definitely worth a shot.

Dark brown in color, good clarity, with a scant, off white head. The head dies out very quickly, leaving only a thin collar clinging to the glass. No lacing. Pleasant and inoffensive toffee malt aroma. Noticable butter and vague plum esters. Not the cleanest, and more like a mellow porter or dark brown ale than a schwarzbier. Still pretty nice, though. The flavor starts off with sweet toffee, and more toffee. Very soft and mellow on the palate, with gentler carbonation and a fairly light body. Nice and smooth, which makes for good drinkability. Not a whole lot going on with the flavor, just simplistic toffee roastiness with a touch of plum fruit and a lightly hopped, herbal finish. Some buttery notes, but they stay within reason. Bittersweet finish and aftertaste, coffee notes lingering on the tastebuds for a while. I always make an effort to try to Magic Hat "batches", and I've found myself buying the mix packs, pawning off the #9 and Circus Boy to guests, just to try the batch beers. They've been really good recently, but I feel like this one falls a little short of the bar they've set with the Big Red, porter and double IPA. I can appreciate the effort to be adventurous, though.

Magic Hat Batch 376
Best before February notched on the back label
Served in a 20 oz tulip pint glass

Pours a jet black with a tan colored head on top that provides a fluffy character. Interesting patterns of sticky lacings cling to the glassware.

The nose is rather dull. Some whiffs of chocolate and faint hops in the background.

Heavly roasted and burnt malts provide the backbone of this beer. Flavors of french roast coffee and milk chocolate provide the foundation with a mini hop snap on the finish. Hints of caramel or molasses mixed in as well.

12 oz. bottle, best by February. It pours into the pilsner almost totally black (plum when held to light) with 2 fingers of light brown, slowly receding head and fairly active carbonation. It smells of dark malts, mainly roasty/chocolatey with hints of blackberry, and the flavor follows closely, adding burnt/smoked malts. The body is light to medium with tingly carbonation and it leaves a medium finish. Overall a good take on a schwarzbier and I say they could go ahead and make this a year-round brew.

Dark chestnut body topped by an ecru head. Head fades fairly quickly. Aroma has a hint of sweet malt, but nothing else. Really clean, though. Flavor has a hint of solvent up front and in the finish. Some slightly burnt, roasted notes also come through. Also a decent bit of bitterness in there too. Mouthfeel is a bit thin, and the carbonation is aggressive. Drinkability is OK. Never know what you're going to get from Magic Hat. This one was a disappointment.

Dark indeed but light still makes its way in especially around the edges. Clear blackened garnet color with a wet, cream colored head. Nose is full of charred blackened malt and a touch of smokey meat roastiness, meat seasoning, and mild chocolate sweetness. Taste has a similar charred smokey roastiness with soft mellow sweetness and is steadily flavorful. Mouthfeel is slick and smooth with a little gritty dry texture, and body is moderate. Drinkability isn't bad. A slight bitter tingle remains on the tongue in the finish.

Not bad + worth a try. I'd get in a mix pack again perhaps.

Pours dark brown coming out of the bottle, black in the glass, with only a collar of light brown lace. Some banana smells sit atop some maple vanilla and roasted malt notes. On the palate, there's a bitter bite of roasted malt and hops first off, an oily-slick mouthfeel and active carbonation through the finish. This beer is well done. The flavors mesh together well, it's well-balanced and true to style.

376 pours a nice dark red black, with a creamy head. There is a dark burnt aroma I've never smelled in another dark beer, maybe its just kind of isolated without too much roastiness. The burnt flavor is less apparent in the flavor, but still there. Not too bad, but with no Ravell or Heart of Darkness, I feel like magic hat is lacking.
