Poors golden, with little head, just a bit darker then the average macro. A real clean smell with a little bit of hops. Taste is also rather clean, mostly of light malt and a good hop finish. This is about the best drinking pilsner i have tasted, not that i have tasted to many from the craft brew world. I would like to see Magic Hat keep this one around

Review is from the February 2007 issue of Beeradvocate Magazine.

Yet another Mystery Beer from Magic Hat, delivered via one of their variety 12-packs. The label sports an odd and somewhat less-than-flattering picture of owner Alan Newman taking a nap. Underside of the cap reads, "The Unreal is the Real deal."

The yellow-golden brew shows a tinge of haze; great head retention; the lace has no problem sticking to the glass. Smooth, moderate body. Lemony citric and light floral and herbal aromas, with a doughy malt nose. A tad nutty in the middle, with some pear-like fruitiness. Soft, oily, lemon hop twang adds a lot to the beer's refreshing quality. Lots of soft hop flavor. Finishes dry, with a full but delicate floral aftertaste.

What an amazing session beer. One of the tastiest offerings from the Mystery Beer series yet, it paired well with roast beef and Boursin cheese on a baguette. Naps or no naps, Alan, brew more of this beer.

From my limited notes.

Pours a golden yellow color with little head.

Smell is mostly grain, slight sweetness, not much going on.

Taste is more hoppy than I imagined, but has a very raw taste to it for a pilsener, clean finish, rather plain for a Magic Hat brew.

This poured with a great bone-white head with decent retention. The color was a very pale yellow. The nose had a light sweetness. Mouthfeel was very light. I experienced a slight lemon taste on the tongue. The finish had that same light lemon flavor. Too light for this kid.

Let me preface this by saying that on various occasions (i.e staining my deck) I liked this beer a lot more. It is hot in PA (80+) this week so I decided to drink this beer.

A - Darker yellow, verging on the top end of orange
S- Piney, with a lighter watered - down hops aroma
T - Pretty much the same as the smell. Crisper hops profile, but not very bitter, more flavoring. Not as good as Sunshine Pils from Troegs, but pretty good.
M - Fairly thin mouthfeel, crisper summery feel
D - As I said before, depending on what I was doing, I could drink seeral of these, but just sitting and drinking, one would definitely be enough.

out of the joe's garage 12 pack, the only beer i really liked was the HiPA. under the cap for this 60 winks read "better luck next time" haha go figure.

A- very bright hazy almost mt. dew yellow with rising bubbles. pure white active bubbly head settles quickly to next to nothing with minimal lace.

S- very macro. apple, raw malt, race, grass clippings, corn, maybe some pear and citrus...maybe.

T- sweet and slightly tart like if you mixed budweiser with a fruity white wine. odd. slight hop presence up front fades quickly. grainy, grassy, and awkwardly out of balance. bland, anheuser bush type aftertaste. i suspect it was possibly beechwood aged (joke-joke).

MF- like a thin syrup, i'd like more carbonation in a pilsner.

D- kinda refreshing, but i don't really wanna finish this glass. when it's gone i'm gonna have magic hat's HiPA. straight 2 tha grave, folks.

Part of a variety pack - the "Mystery Beer":

Pours straw yellow with a thin head that soon becomes a thin patch.

The smell is of sweet grain - something about it not far from an average macro brew.

The taste is of sweet grain with some vague fruitiness. Rather bland with an abrupt finish.

It's light-bodied with a fizzy feel. Slightly soapy aftertaste is there, but fleeting, like the taste as a whole.

It's a step or so above an average macro - bland. I would expect more from a craft brewery. It is listed here as a pilsener, though it says ale on the label. Maybe it's supposed to be a blonde ale. Whatever the case it is bland and forgettable. It says "A rave or the grave?" Bury it. There's a man sleeping on the label? Is it out of boredom? Probably.

appearance - Clear straw color, and a nice white head that fades out.

smell - Hint of hops in the smell.

taste - Clean, fresh taste, with some hop taste, but not overwellming.

mouthfeel - Light body.

drinkability - Not a bad beer, kinda on the side of a light lager.

This is a great, thirst-quenching beer. I love the name and the artwork on the bottle! The beer is a standard yellow. Smell is hoppy and creamy. Actually, this reminds me of a cream ale. The taste is a very clean, low-hopped beer. The mouthfeel is wet and bubbly. Drinkability is great...mow on!

Pours a hazy looking light golden colour wit ha mid sized frothy head that dissolves quickly but leaves more residue on the glass than expected. This one basically looks like a hazy Heineken.

The aroma is light, a bit sweet and a bit hoppy, with grassy notes and some floral notes coming through. Very grainy indeed but pretty good in the end.

The flavour is low-key hoppy, with the grass and floral notes coming through again. There's a bit more noticeable malt here and a bit less sweetness than is present in the nose. Also picked up a slight metallic taste at the finish of some sips. Weird, but not out of place and I can't pick up on what it really is (it's not metallic per se but that's the best way I can describe it). Mouthfeel is light bodied and crisp.

Overall this one isn't bad but is certainly nothing memorable. I'm not a big pilsener guy so I don't know how quickly I'd seek this one out again. It's got it's good points but is run of the mill overall. Worth a try.

It pours quietly and captures very little head which disappears within a minute or so. Very fine bubbles are lively throughout, the color a yellow gold, quite thin. The aroma seems to jump out at first opening the bottle but isn't so strong after pouring. A sour apple, almost of vinegar. A mouthful is pleasant enough, mild but tangy at the tip of the tongue. Feels a bit more watery at the finish. The back of the mouth catches some hoppiness and I sense some grape qualities but it is subtle. Generally this is not the beer to drink if you want to sink your teeth into something. It's dominant quality seems to be that it is mild and watery, closer to some mass produced lager. Not something I would have expected from MH but probably fills a need from some market segment. Not my cup of ale, but drinkable enough for a try.

One of the offerings in the "Joe's Garage" mixed 12 pack.

Pours a semi-cloudy golden yellow. Very thin white head quickly fades to a ring. Lacing is nonexistent.

The smell is of grainy corn. It's a bit husky as well, with some light hops in the background.

Flavor is, again, a bit husky with a pale malt backbone. Some hop bitterness is noticed, but not a lot of hop flavor. Not overly impressed by the taste.

Slightly dry, but crisp, mouthfeel. Aftertaste is a little grainy. This isn't a bad beer to maybe hand to some BMC drinkers, but I wouldn't buy it if I wanted a good pilsener.

Magic Hat 60 Winks Ale
12 oz brown bottle
Freshness date is notched for July
Served in a 20 oz tulip pint glass

Pours a hazy bronze yellow with a decent head on top leaving random trails of sticky lace.

The nose is fairly weak with a whiff of canned corn and a hint of hops in the background.

Sugary sweet flavors with a strong grainy kick. Hints of grass, vegetables and herbs with a distinct hop presence (German Noble Hops?).

Ehhh...not bad, but nothing worth checking out either. I was hoping for more. Stick with the real deal German Pilsners.

"Down at Joe's Garage we didn't have no dope or LSD, but a couple of quarts of beer would fix it so the intonation would not offend your ear" - Zappa "Joe's Garage" I just got all of the Zappa albums downloaded on one file so I figured it was time to listen to some Joe's Garage with this variety pack. Appears lightly hazed pale golden tone with a large white egg shell hued head leaves behind minimal sparse lacing as it dwindles at a moderate pace. Aormatics some light sweetness cereal in nautre with some light herbal hops the two row light toasted malts here give off some grainy cooked veggie notes as well with a hint of corn syrup in there. Flavor evenly dispersed light sweetness with a decent amount of hop bitterness seem to blend on my palate all at once although this brew is lacking in flavor overall that grassy herbal hop bite stays with you kinda surprsing but it doesn't blend so well most German pils I love the aftertaste this one however I want to cleanse the ol' palate. Mouthfeel is lighter bodied not watery in any way ample carbonation tickles the back of the throat really stays with you after each sip. Drinkability, a decent crack at a German pils but give me some Troeg's Sunshine or Prima over this stuff any day of the week, a beer the masses might enjoy over and over again.
