poured from the bottle into a pint glass

A - Pours a medium gold with plenty of tiny bubbles streaming to a two finger, slightly off-white head. Head is gone halfway down the glass, leaves behind marginal lacing.

S - Familiar pilsner malt smell with unfamiliar agave. Interesting - certainly not bad.

T - Pilsner malt upfront. The body is standard pils with a hint of poppy seed flavors while agave plays an slight unusual, sour dance in the background. Malty finish that fades to a noble-hop aftertaste.

M - Between medium and light bodied with moderate carbonation.

Yes, this beer is two years old, but it doesn't seem any worse for the wear. Hell, it's been all over the country with me and I figured tonight was a good night to finally review it. Basically it seems like a pretty standard pilsner with a few oddities thrown in. A far cry from bad, but something a certainly don't regret not being in existence any more.

From BeerAdvocate Magazine Volume III, Issue II:

Nice! Magic Hat pulled out their supreme extremeness for this one. A Golden Ale with added poppy seeds and agave.

Good white froth to start off with, though it dissipates to a thin lacing. Clear and bright pale golden, a typical lighter color for the spring season. Fruity and nutty aroma with some mildly sweet maltiness in the back. Moderate-sized body is a little chewy and smooth. Nutty and bitter at first, maltiness comes in with a sweet biscuit flavor almost like homemade shortbread. The agave leaves an odd trace of sweetness, and the poppy keeps it nutty along with the malt. Finishes semisweet with a long linger of bitterness.

We really dig this beer--it's a trip, and something we'd love to come back to. Proof again that extreme beer is not just about high levels of alcohol and bitterness that ruins your taste buds. A slice of peaceful beer revolution in a bottle.

Hi. Still new to the review thing, but here goes...

Got this as part of a variety pack to drink during a get together on a pretty hot and humid weekend. I drank it while brewing a batch of beer on a 80 degree humid day and my kitchen was all steamy from the 5 gallons of potential yumminess at a rolling boil.

I had no idea what to expect. Because of the brewing, I didn't take the time to read other BA reviews. I wish I did take a minute however...

B: as in bottle... It took me a while even to figure out what the beer was. Magic Hat isn't afraid to get all abstract in their bottle art, not to mention the inspirational sayings on the bottle caps. By the way, much like fortune cookies, the sayings are much more fun if you say "in bed" at the end of them... :)

A: Semi cloudy. Looked very much like a wheat/hefe beer. Some light foam on the top that dissipated very slowly and helped bring the aroma up and out of the glass (tapered pilsner glass)

S: Think wheat/hefe meets Saison/Farmhouse. Some sourness, tree fruit is evident (apples, pear).

T: Hmmm. Odd is certainly an apt description. Think wheat ale meets Saison/Farmhouse ale meets sour style beer (Flemish). Like I said... odd. It took a few sips, but I liked it. It was fruity, kind of musty, and some spice in there as well. It really seemed to be a wheat/hefe style beer. This beer is definitely more complex than the inital appearance and smell leads on and was refreshing.

M: carbonation offered an initial 'bite' on the palate, but had some smoothness to it as it kind of foamed a little in the mouth. It wasn't thin, it coated my mouth, helping the flavor linger a bit.

D: I could easily drink a few of these, particularly on a hot steamy day and if I wasn't thinking of the typical definition of beer. This is an odd drink. My palate would likely get tired after 2 or so.

Appearance- This beer pours a very clear, golden color with a thin white head which disappates quickly.

Smell- Very odd smell. Pilsner malts are present, not much hoppiness that I can tell. A very weird spiciness is noticable which I guess is the agave.

Taste- Strong maltiness with an odd spiciness. The hops are more present in the taste than in the aroma. Interesting fruity sweetness accompanied by an odd vegetation taste.

Mouthfeel- Crisp, clean with a medium body.

Overall- Not a bad beer but an odd beer. The name is fitting. They know it's odd so I'll give it too them. At least they're having fun brewing different stuff.

A: Cloudy golden yellow. Almost no head and minimal lacing.

S: Spices and slight hop overtone. Cloves and ginger included in this complex scented beer.

T&M: Very good complex flavors that are not too sweet. Many spices that are mild enough not to be too overpowering. Light and crisp with slightly dry aftertaste. Very good.

Excellent beer and the best that I've had from Magic Hat. Originally tasted on tap at the Flying Saucer. Have not been able to find a 6-pack and was forced to buy a sampler pack in order to get 3 bottles. Magic Hat should consider continued bottling!

Pours gold with small off white head.

Smells of spice, banana, pineapple, and something that reminds me of cookie dough. A bit of grain smell as well.

Tastes interesting. Very subtle flavors of wheat, citrus, and an unfamiliar spice that i guess is the poppy seed. Slight agave flavor comes through with some metallic notes at the after taste.

Very thin bodied and carbonated. Easy to drink and a good flavorful refresher for summer.

Cheers to Cakanator for this extra! A slight and quickly fading dirty white head blankets this murky pale gold brew. Smells of sweet malts, grain, herb and pineapple with a few metallic notes sprinkled in. Big fruity and spicy notes hit the palate up front, followed by some very subtle citrusy hops, and blanketed by some lemon zest. Has a light to medium mouth-feel with brisk carbonation upon a quick shake. Great example of a fun summertime beer.

Pours a very effervescent gold. Lots of carbonation for the kiddies. Not much head to speak of.

Smells kinda bland. Some grains coming through. I'm getting some of the agave adding a strange, but welcome dimension.

The taste is pretty nice. There's a solid grain flavor coming through, the poppy seed is more evident in the flavor than it was in the nose. Agave kinda rounds it out. All of the flavors are pretty subtle though. Nothing out of control.

Super smooth as always.

This is super drinkable and refreshing. Not the most exciting beer on the planet, but pretty decent nonetheless.

I've had this a few times but this is the first time I'm reviewing it. Color is a pale yellow with very little head retention. Smell is of sweet citrus. Flavor is almost wine like in its sweetness, somewhat refreshing but a little overbearing. Overall pretty average.

Odd Notion pours a slightly hazy yellow color with a very small fizzy white head on top. The foam dissolves to a ring around the beer leaving no lace on the glass.

The aroma reminds me of a hefeweizen. Mainly citrus notes of orange and lemon, with perhaps a hint of yeast/bread mixed in. Each sip of this light to medium bodied beer is soft on the palate. Carbonation is light and effervescent with a firm snap on the tip of the tongue.

The taste is like a Belgian Wit. Orange and lemon citrus up front, blended with crisp pale malt and a hint of bubblegum. At the end mild grass hop bitterness finishes off the sip. Once gone the citrus flavor lingers on the palate.

This is an easy drinking beer with a nice flavor. It reminds me of a crystal wheat with some a touch of hefeweizen thrown in. A great beer for a summer day.

A- Clear, bright and golden color. With little head retention.

S- Smells like a fresh poppy bagel. Odd Notion has some green earthiness to it. With a small hint of citrus in the background.

T- Odd Notion has a hard upfront poppiness which is followed up by an Agave taste. The aftertaste has a malty and bitter hop taste.

M- Thinner medium body, with a good fitting carbonation.

D- A very different tasting beer, its flavors are make it hard to pound one right after another.

Grabbed both the new twelve packs the other day as I had realized that there were 5 of the 7 beers in there that I have not had, and that was good enough for me. Went on an epic magic hat tasting last night and went through them all. Served cold and poured into a pint glass, this one was consumed on 06/05/2009.

Golden straw in color with a big fizzy white head on top. Light peach look to it left me a bit concerned from the start. Then I reach in to get a whiff and there is almost nothing there. Light citrus maybe, hint of grain, but really rather light and dull, a bit dissapointing if I am being honest. Light flavor as well, light fruit, touch of spice, but really rather too light and overcarbonated leaves me lost and looking for much bigger flavors here. Goes down like water, but the taste is far too light to really be enjoyable.

Overall not terrible, but forgettable, I am not sure where they were going with this, but it missed the mark for me.

I read the poppy agave pilsner and was thinking the worst. But I have to admit, this was pretty good!

Pours out a clear golden color with a decent size head.

Smell was on the lighter side which consisted of citrus (probably the agave), light spices, and grassy hops. So far so good I guess.

Taste was that of a pilsner, but with some sweet twang going on. Very interesting. The poppy and agave give it a very interesting mixture. The hop profile with the poppy do give it a sharp taste, but it isn't overwhelming in any way. Quite decent!

Mouthfeel was light to medium with quite a bit of carbonation. Has a creamy texture also.

I have to give them credit, this is a good brew. Lots of interesting mixtures happening in this beer, but it's all in a good way. Give it a try.

Picked up last Saturday at trader Joe's in Cary. Kind of strange season for a spiced beer but I am a bit curious. Pours a light straw color with a foamy head that doesn't last long. The nose is grainy with slight notes of citrus and spice.

Strong crystal malt flavors backed with noble hops and a lot of yeast, reminiscent of a Belgian. A finishing dose of herbs adds some astringency and complexity. Not really my cup of tea here but instresting and consistent with the style as I understand it.

This is a unique beer, it kind of reminds me of a Belgian Wit. The appearance is yellow and almost completely clear. It poured nicely with about 1/4" of head and has moderate carbonation. The aroma is of malt, grain and alcohol. The taste is nice crisp, slightly malty and bears a hint of I believe coriander. There is also a slight sweetness in the taste. The after taste is of alcohol and also what I believe is coriander. This is a highly quaffiable beer that would go perfect on a hot day.
