This beer is retired; no longer brewed.

Wacko is the liquid song of summer: Crisp like the morning, cool like the evening and quenching all day long. Pop the top and set your summer loose. Wacko is a delicious summer beer with a big malty aroma, a subdued hop bite and a clean, slightly sweet finish.

Appearance: Clear pale orange in color, with a small, dense white head, which retains well. Finely-beaded lacing adorns the glass walls. The carbonation is modest and slow-rising.

Aroma: Malty, sweet aroma, with some sweet fruity notes.

Taste: Opens with solid malt flavors, sweet, almost artificial fruit notes appear, somewhat reminiscent of breakfast cereal of long-ago childhood. A bit of late bitterness clears out the fruit flavors.

Mouth feel: Fairly soft, with a slight sting of carbonation.

Drinkability/notes: Its OK. Nothing really moves me, maybe because its not summer, or perhaps because endless summer slacking just doesn't resonate right now. But, its alright.

Presentation: Packaged in a standard twelve-ounce brown glass long neck bottle, served in a New Belgium Brewing chalice.

I can't even fathom the still make this beer. There have been many amazing things added to beer, blueberries, grapefruit, etc, but beets.. Beets are a punishment and create a really horrible beer. It's not secret that I am not a fan of Magic Hat but this one takes the cake, it was seriously the worst beer I have ever experienced.

A: Reddish gold with a thin short-lived white head that leaves no lacing behind.
S: Fruity beet & spicy aromas.
T: Light body with beet sugar flavors and slight grass presence.
M: Light bodied, refreshing and sweet.
O: Not overly impressive but somewhat decent fruit beer. I would not go out of my way to drink this one again.

I don't know what to say. My notes on this are a little rough, but I'll try to turn them down. I just thought the taste of beets was there, and it just wasn't a good thing. I looks cool as a result, but I just don't think it works, unless maybe you're Dwight Schrute. Hard to get past.

Poured from a 12 oz bottle into a hand glass.

A: Amber hue. Pours a 1 finger, foamy, white head. Settles slowly, but not completely. Very nice beer ring lacing.

S: Heavy wheaty nose with a little strawberry and raspberry.

T: Light washed out malty tone, accentuated with indistinct fruit flavors.

M: A little soapy on the palate, and just feels perpetually flat.

D: Session.

Atmosphere is pretty solid. Nice head, and some really nice lacing. Nose is a wheat with a little fruit. Flavor is washed out malt, with indistinct fruit compliments. Overall, this is an okay quaff.

This smells like a bitter root to me. The flavor profile is...well...boring. With all that crap they are using in this beer, I was expecting at least a bit more punch. Alas, there is not much to this except faint, drab hints of who-cares-what-it-is. Nice label. Boring beer.

12oz bottle served in a standard shaker pint.

pours a slightly cloudy pink grapefruit/amber tone while yielding a very short lived, spritzy 3/4" head; no lacing. some points for originality with the color (i guess) but overall not the most appealing presentation. not much doing in the nose. grainy, some muted malt characters.

flavor isn't an abject failure. unfortunately that's about the nicest thing i can say about it. grainy, vaguely malty, and bitter. just not very tasty. borderline drainpour; i could choke it down, but what's the point of that? thin, light mouthfeel with average carbonation.

overall this isn't one i'm appreciating... definitely not something i'll be looking to try again.

dont be too hard on this one, its a clever summer brew. pours a hazy pink color from beet juice added, with a short white head without much retention. smells like a wheat beer, plenty of yeasty spice going on and a very light body. flavor of the beets does not really come through, its more of a visual thing, but this is a refreshing beer with nice flavor imparted by the yeast. sort of sweet for just a second at the end, before fading out slowly with a touch of bitter hops. feel is fine, very very light. a good summer session with intense carbonation. overall i like it, not my first choice, but a very drinkable seasonal that is perhaps being treated a bit too harshly here on BA...

Tried this one because the beet juice thing intrigued me. My wife swears by juicing beets for health.
Appearance is interesting with rose/amber hue, and pink tinged foamy head. The aroma is weak vegetables and cranberries and not much else. Taste is disappointing also with soapy tones and thin malt: no hop presence evident. Mouthfeel is thin and uninteresting. Overall not something I would buy again, but I do give them credit for trying something outside the safety zone.

pint glass. best by june 30. consumed in september.

a - pours a light, rosy pink color with a thin cap of light pink head. some lacing present. looks like soda.

s - wheat, spice, beets.

t - sort of grainy and fruity. lightly bitter with a dry finish. not really sure what they are trying to do here.

m - really thin with enough co2 to feel prickly on the tongue.

o -ok, so it's past it's best by date, i didn't look until after i drank it. that being said, this is a f-ing strange beer. not awful, but feels more like a wine cooler with less sugar. not recommended.

Poured from a 12 ounce bottle into a pint glass.

Hazy coppery body. Thin white head. The smell is clean and unsubstantial. Just very bland, hardly smells like beer. Taste of caramel malts becomes stronger as the beer warms. Reminds me of an Oktoberfest.

I wouldn't suggest this beer.

This was part of a mixed 12pack I purchased. Best by date of Aug 31. Poured from a 12oz bottle into a pint glass. Beer is kind of orange amber in color with a nice sized white head on top. The head is a bit thin in substance but has some stability and sustainability.

Aroma was a bit lacking. Bready, caramel, and yeast. Not much else going on. Seems like most Magic Hat beers smell the same anyway so I am not really surprised. Must be the house yeast they use.

Flavor was really not impressive. Dry, straw-like and lager-like. Slight caramel. No body and highly carbonated. Kind of like drinking dirty soda water. Very light bodied and not very good. Sweet and tastes really cheap. I would certainly avoid this again. The really high carbonation kills this one. Yuck!

Poured from a 12 ounce bottle into a beer mug.

Appearance: Beer is a deep orange color with strong ruby tendencies. In the right (or wrong) light, it nearly looks like red pop. Head is a medium-dark ecru color which fizzes down to a thin film on the surface very quickly. Around the edges, there's a touch more thickness to the head, though. Just for the novelty of the color, and the decent head retention in spite of the beer and glass being warm, I've gotta rate this pretty high.

Smell: Cran-raspberry wheat beer. Lots of red fruit, with a gentle sourness which is evenly matched with a mellow sweetness and acceptable bitterness. Past that, a light malt character (pretty yeasty) and a touch of grassiness. I like it! Mixed well.

Taste/Mouthfeel: Well, it's very fizzy, as the imploding head would suggest. Through all the carbonation, it's difficult to taste much of anything. There's a strong wheat vibe to it, but only a smattering of fruit flavor. Moderate fresh-cut-grass, a very subdued sweet'n'sour berry flavor. Aftertaste is pretty wet...all in all, not bad, might be a good summer session beer. As it is, it's fall...all in all, not so great.

Overall: So so. Not bad, but I wouldn't recommend it.

I don't try to many beers that I pour out. But this one I did. Awful. Did not even taste like any beer I have ever tasted. And this in itself is not enough to turn me off. But this beer was ill-conceived and poorly executed.

Pours a clear light brown with rose highlights. Small rose colored head. Little to no aroma. The taste was like a watered-down raspberry tea. Blech! Flat and watery.

I don't know if this beer was just old or what, but I had been leery of Magic Hat in the past. I have not found one beer brewed there to my liking. Sorry, guys. Keep trying.

Appearance: Poured into pint glass. Weird pink hue that reminded me of pickled beets. I was afraid to spill in on my clothes for fear of a stain that would not come out. The head was this but stayed until the end with little lacing.

Smell: Has a wierd sweet smell without much malt or hops.

Taste: A little sweet and slightly sour taste with a little hop bite on the back side.

Mouthfeel: Extremely thin with just little viscosity.

Overall I would buy this beer again on an extremely hot summer day. It is refreshing but in an odd way.

I allowed my love of a bargain to overtake my love of beer on this one as I picked up an assorted 12 pack of Magic Hat "Summer Scene". That is the reason why I am staring at what is essentially a purple colored beer. But given the fact that the beer is called Wacko, I have nobody to blame but myself. The smell is what one might encounter at an overpriced candy store in some touristy area, an artificial yet enjoyable sugary fruitiness, much like taffy. The sugary fruitiness continued into the taste, but was joined with an earthy maltiness. The mouthfeel had very much a fluffy dessert feel to it. Despite my initial hesitation, once I let go of my preconceptions/pretentions, I actually quite enjoyed this beer. There is a solid base to this beer beneath its initial appearance. I could seriously consider sessioning this sometime.

Straight from the bottle, Wacko smells of grains, grains, and more grains: freshly-thrashed wheat, French baguette, biscuits. A decent layer of fruits simmers below, bringing orange and berry aromas. Just at the edges, a thin rind of grapefruit speaks of hops. In all, the nose is balanced and enticing, even if not necessarily impressive or novel.

On the tongue, the beer begins with a shot of orange, banana, and berry fruits, which are quickly joined by the grain flavors noted in the nose, resulting in a lovely fruit-and-grain combo that is somewhat reminiscent of a good cold cereal with fresh fruit slices. The grains can become slightly overpowering, giving the beer a taste not unlike sucking on fresh-pulled stalks of hay. Hints of nut bring an interesting twist. Hops are virtually nonexistent. The aftertaste is a continuation of the grain flavors (lacking most of the fruits), and fades with relative quickness. Mouthfeel is medium-light, and carbonation is medium-high.

Overall, this is decent fare, having many good flavors and characteristics, but lacks something to set it apart from the field, and begs for a shot of brown sugar and at least a light hop kick. Good beach fare, then, but not something to take to a beer tasting.

Orange beer with pinkish highlights and a steady amount of visible carbonation. The head is a light pinkish hue as well, with good retention. Barley on the nose with a somewhat strange aroma behind it, I'm guessing some sort of vegetable. Beets maybe? Not necessarily pleasant, but at least different. Almost adjunct lager-esque.

The aroma translates almost exactly to the taste. Adjunct lager-like corn malt taste with an interesting vegetable flavor. I'm guessing beets again, but I'm not quite certain. Some hops add a touch of bitterness, but it lingers throughout the taste and finish, leading to a dry finish and aftertaste. The aftertaste is somewhat odd as well, with that vegetable taste lingering. Its refreshing for sure, but I can think of a lot of refreshing beers that I like the taste of better. Great bottle cap though of course: "Banana costumes, by nature, are funny." Made me chuckle.

My buddy Vinny brought a couple cases of this over for our post-bike ride drink. Wasn't looking for anything special...just looking for some low cost beer. At $13 per case, this hit the important points. This was reviewed from one of the leftovers.

Reddish copper in color, the beer pours with very little head, and it produced no lacing at all. The aroma and flavor are both somewhat off-feeling, with a tart twang and that malty/adjuncty character that reminds me of cheap kegs in college. Getting past that, there is a touch of caramel. Some sweet vegetal notes come through, but really, it just doesn't work all that well. Vegetal hops are a no-no. I feel the same about beets in my beer. I'm not Dwight Schrute. Off flavors in the finish. Not diggin this, though it is much better straight from the bottle.

A: Poured into tall glass. Pink hued cloudy amber. White large cell structure foam. Rather large head. Very minimal lacing even though the head stuck around awhile.

S: Odd, watermelon like sweet and sour smell

T: Same slightly sweet, slightly sour taste as in the smell. Some hop bite on the back side.

M: Mostly thin but a tiny bit of jellyfish like viscosity.

Overall I don't think I would buy this beer again. It's really not terrible, just odd. Hard to pinpoint exact overall flavor impression.

Enjoyed this 12oz bottle out of a large snifter glass.

A: A very light amber almost pink brew. When they said it beet colored they weren’t joking. Has a white, one-finger head that quickly dissipates into a wispy lace. No trail down the glass.

S: Has a sweet malty aroma. Hints of fruit in the background. Sort of a neutral smell – not really good or bad just sort of there.

T: Similar to the smell the flavor is sweet and malty most likely due to the beet sugar. A little bit tart and tangy.

M: Medium body and carbonation

O: Well – I think the color and the label were the best things about this beer. I was not overly impressed although I do give Magic Hat credit for trying something different. But different is not always good.

12oz. bottle poured into a standard pint glass

The beer pours lightly and produces a white sudsy head with little weight. It dissipates quickly and leaves no lacings inside the glass.

The reddish beet color is there for sure, but it also looks like a standard amber at the right light and angle. The smell is sweet and tart and very much like a cranberry lambic or a cherry beer. I'm not impressed.

The taste is light and malty with the same annoying tang that's in the smell. No trace of hops. Bad aftertaste. Not enjoyable and hard to get down. High level of carbonation. This is a terrible beer.

A - The head is extremely light and quick lived, similar to a soda. The body is attractive with it's reddish accent.

S - The aroma is malty and slightly fruity.

T - The flavors are not very camptivating. It has a some malt and a mere hint of spice.

M - Moderate amount of abbrassiveness. Going down it has a bit of difficulty. Not very smooth or refreshing for a summer seasonal brew.

~ I wouldn't recommend this brew to my friends. There are better summer brews available.

A: Shocked by the color. I didnt know in advance it was beat colored. Red with orange tint with a two finger light pink head.

S: Very bready and earthy. Wheat and a little malt.

T: Starts bready, nutty, earthy and wheat. The sweetness doesn't last long before the touch of bitterness aftertaste sets in.

M: Light bodied. Medium to high carbonation.

Overall: Not a fan. Dont know if its a C beer but its not something I would want to try again. The color throws me off. I always appreciate the creativity and therefore I wasnt too hard on this one.

Well, for a beer calling itself Wacko, this thing certainly doesn’t disappoint. Right up front you notice the color. It’s got a weird sort of reddish pink tinge to it. The head comes up quickly, but goes away just as fast, leaving nothing behind in terms of lacing. Beyond the pinkish hue this beer is a reddish amber, but it’s certainly off-kilter.

Aroma is unpleasant. Smells a bit like rotten fruit. Following the rotten fruit aroma is a smell not unlike that of dish detergent. There’s an earthy undertone that isn’t bad, and somewhere the malt aroma is trying to scratch its way to the surface.

The initial impression of the beer is sweet – almost overly so – and then there’s the beet finish. In the middle there’s a nice single malt note, but it doesn’t really get a chance to shine with the finish coming up strong. Depending on your love of beets, you’ll either like or hate this beer. I happen to like beets, and even with that knowledge I still find this one a challenge from a taste perspective. The more that I taste, it the more it becomes sweet and somewhat unbearable.

Mouthfeel is thin and crisp, with a light amount of carbonation. As a summer seasonal, it works, because it’s light and refreshing. Not much else is noticeable or stands out. The lack of carbonation hurts this one quite a bit, as the beets and malt sweetness combine to make this a cloying mess.

Fact: If I were Dwight Schrute, there’s no doubt that I would love this beer. Fact: I am not Dwight Schrute. Because of this I find myself somewhat at odds with this beer. I don’t really know what to make of it. The aroma is downright disgusting. The taste is strange, with hops and malt hinting at the start but beets taking over. The lack of carbonation hurts what would otherwise be an interesting, albeit Wacko, diversion.
