Beer added by: WesWes on 01-20-2010

This beer is retired; no longer brewed.

This unique surprise cross-pollinates the classic American wheat beer with an American Pale Ale. What grows next is a fruitfully unfiltered union with a delightful hop aroma, a pleasant citrus hop flavor, and a beautifully balanced finish that leaves other ales hoppy green with springtime envy.

Nothing special, yeast & citrus all over the place, but lack of focus seems to be an issue here. Pours a yellow unfiltered look with lots of cloudiness. Little to no head, leaving some residue as it drinks. Citrus pop in the smell, same with the taste. Wheat is in there as well. It might be better when it's warmer outside and either on a boat or the beach, maybe even a cook out, but I wouldn't seek this beer out.

Review from BeerAdvocate Magazine Issue #38 (Mar 2010):

Part of their continuation of experimental beers, this version is a hybrid of the American Pale Ale and Wheat Ale ... could be one-in-the same for many beer drinkers. Pale in color but hazy; good head retention with obvious help from the wheat. Clean, minty herbal hops in the nose, nuttiness from the malt and yeast underneath. The shell of a Pale Ale is there with the crispness, hoppiness and drinkability. Slight lemon flavor from the hops. The wheat side of it all actually enhances the crispness. Hoppiness plays it safe with just enough bitterness to be in balance, though the yeast flavor seems to get in the way. Ale
Bready with a nice bite of wheat malt in the drying finish, with more of the yeastiness wanting to play.

A bit too safe and leans toward more of the typical pale, refreshing, spring seasonal-style beer. We'd hate to say that Magic Hat is losing its touch, but this beer could have used a heavier hand of hops to separate itself from the rest.

12 ouce bottle, consume before date notched onto the side of the label. Pours clouded, dull medium apricot, off white head, leaving just a thin collar, tiny bubble film and moderate lace. Moderate lemon and minor earthyness in the nose. More lemon on the nose and respectable amount of resiny hops midway and through the finish. Dry finish. Nice job. Decent APWA. Would work as a sessioner, nice warm weather brew and with all kinds of food, salads, spicy food, BBQ etc.

Thanks to swalden28 for sharing this bottle.

The beer pours a clear yellow color with a white head. The aroma is wheat with some lemon and other citrus fruit. The flavor is wheat along with some spicy hops and lemony citrus. Medium mouthfeel and medium carbonation. Pretty bland overall.

Appearance is pale golden apricot hued with a bright white frothing head, that rises well above the rim of my glass. Speckled scattered lacing adds to this clouded beauties eye candy. Aroma has earthy herbal mint and a mild citrus blend of hops, it's 35 IBUs so don't expect a Gumballhead or Hop Sun. A nice sharp wheat beer sensation as well, brings out a bit of mango with the citrus peel accents. Flavor has a trademark Magic Hat yeast character that brings chalky, doughy flavors to the forefront. The hops are pretty much interwoven with this, a bit of citrus and other tropical fruit but mainly the experience is dampered by the large amounts of unpleasant dry chalky yeast. Mouthfeel is medium to light bodied with drying finish, tart and bitter citrus rinds are left behind between sips. Drinkability overall isn't as drinkable as I was hoping for. I wish more alpha acids citrus, pine, earthiness would have came through with a bit more bittering hop flavors.

I poured this beer from a bottle into a pint glass. It had a two finger fluffy white head with lots of lacing. The beer is a yellow/ orange color and is cloudy. The head never went completely away their was still a little foam covering the beer. It smells of yeast, wheat, and citrus/lemon. The tastse is of wheat, malt, citus, and hops. The front end is dry and sour. The back end leaves a slightly bitter hop aftertaste. The beer is crisp, refreshing and would be a good session beer.

Underside of the cap reads: "Help me...I'm trapped in the brewery."

Since it's an unfiltered wheat ale, I poured, swirled and poured again. Got a real nice looking beer in my glass, sporting a two-finger fluffy white cloud on top and a liquid the color of pineapple juice but extremely cloudy. Nice.

Aroma is more subdued than hoped, although the banana and bubblegum are lovely. There's a delicate flowery essence further back. A vegetable-like thing threatens to take over the good stuff, but never gets too serious.

Flavor of banana and bubblegum on the tongue, as the nose suggests; and some grapefruit too. Would work if marketed as "Banana-Grapefruit-Bubblegum Ale" (talk about an odd notion). But it's fairly subdued, and there are some grassy elements here and lightly spicy herbal/floral characteristics. That sweet bubblegum/banana/grapefruit flavor keeps riding through in the finish.

Texturally it's hard to match the slick, fluffy, completely wonderful texture that many of the great German wheat beers offer, but still, it's fine, with tickling carbonation and a nice airy buoyancy.

My first bottle, yesterday, was pretty ho-hum; with a fresher palate today and a lighter mood (and better weather) this totally hit the spot in a most undeniable way. And makes a needed change of pace from the barleywines, imperial stouts and double IPAs I've been hitting lately. Nice one, Magic Hat, I still believe in you...even if the continued inclusion of #9 in every single damn mixed pack is a serious letdown.

Poured into a pint glass.

A: Thin off the nose with a hazy deep golden body.

S: Weak off the nose. a pale wheat aroma with hints of spice and orange.

T: Mild carbonation with a bold spice and light hefe taste on the finish.

M: Complex layers of spice, short on the lingering taste, but very refreshing.

D: A bold taste that calls back for more and a light easy drinking beer. This wheat is something to comeback for. Good addition to the odd notion series.

This is supposed to be a wheat IPA. I guess I can see the inspiration but this isn't hoppy enough. It's just a modern American wheat beer with some hops to it. The malt provides and sweet and dry wheat cracker taste while spicy hops gently kick in as the beer finishes.

Poured from bottle into a pint glass. Golden straw colored and hazy in appearance. Almost no head formed. Smells a little fruity or sweet. Some wheat in the taste, but also malt and a good amount of bitter hops in the end with a dry finish. Mouthfeel is medium. Easy to drink.

Pours a slightly hazy honey straw color with a smallish white head that settles into a light ring. The aroma is sweet with a zest of lemon, solid wheat malt, cereal like. The taste has a light yeasty spice which is cut by the wheat malt, light lemon and a grassy bitter hop. It has a sweet cereal grain like flavor as well. The feel is fairly light with fizzy carbonation, good balance between sweet and bitter. Nice flavors for a rather blah style. I appreciate the hops in the end as it adds some character to the brew, as well as that light spice that kicks off the flavor.

A great refresher. This to me really gets at the center of the style. A cloudy straw gold with a sizable fluffy head and a nice bit of lace. Smell is almost like a cross between Hefe and a Kolsh. Really nice bits of wheat malt and lemony hoppiness. Some grassy notes and a faint bit of banana. Taste is more of the same with a superb wheat malt biscuit and dry, crisp hop finish. A bit of tart apples and grapes in the middle flesh out the malt with a fruitiness to the body. Light notes of vanilla wafers linger in the back of my mouth with a very light grapefruit. Feel is light and crisply carbonated. Super drinkable. This is one to stockpile for the summer

12 oz. bottle poured into standard pint glass.

Quite cloudy light amber with a black streak. Touch of white foam.

Malty effervescence. Hints of fruit.

Taste opens up with the hop - feels wrapped around a light malt base. Bitterness lingers a bit longer than I'd ask for. Light fruitiness, some bready notes.

Good drinkability & taste, but with a hop that feels oddly out of place.

A - Not as translucent as most unfiltered beers. Has a lot more carbonation action going on with minimal head. The color is orange in body with some burnt, darker feature.

S - Fully bodied wheat with dryness complemented along with citrus.

T - Nice balance of wheat and orange. Some bitterness in the aftertaste, but it works well.

M - A bit thinner and more mobile in action. Full of body though.

D/Notes - Decent wheat beer from Magic Hat. Could use a few tweaks. Enjoyable for the most part. Worth a try.

Appearance - The pour was rather non eventful. A bright golden yellow, with great clarity. Nice three inch high head of white foam, fizzled out after just a few moments and then finally left behind nothing, no side glass lace to speak of either. Good carbonation bubbling up throughout the session.

Smell - The aroma was extremely light. Some floral hops, hints of lemon, and grass, and a touch of wheat were about all you were picking up. Had nice bright profile though.

Taste - The flavor was much more of the same, with a very bright, and appropriate for summer taste. There was a decent hint of orange rind and lemon in the back, with a nice rounded wheat flavor, nothing shocking or extraordinary here though.

Mouthfeel - The feel was very light and highly carbonated. Crisp, and clean with little in the way of aftertaste. Nice beverage for a hot day,

Drinkability - This ties in here as well, as it was just very light, with low abv and just that slightest bit of citrus to make it pop. It could have easily been something that you have multiples of for sure.

Overall not a bad summer beer, however I would have to pass on trying it again. Just not really up my alley as far as flavor. Nothing wrong with it though and as far as blond ales, not half bad.

Pours a hazy, dark straw color with very little head. Aroma is faint; mostly wheat malt with some hop fruitiness reminiscent of mixed berries and tropical fruit. Taste is refreshing - dry tropical fruit character quickly followed by a healthy dose of hop bitterness and moderate carbonic bite. Simcoe hop character is noticable, but stays in the background. Overall, the flavors compete a bit more than they meld, and the beer isn't as balanced as it could be, but it's certainly very drinkable and interesting.

Poured from a 12oz bottle into a US tumbler pint glass.

A: The beer is a cloudy light gold color, with a thin white head that fades very quickly and leaves a thin lace on the glass.

S: The aroma is of wheat, light malts, citrus and a little bit of hops.

T: The taste starts out with bready flavors of wheat and a light but hearty malt character. Then some mildly sweet flavors of citrus and honey come in. The hops presence is mild but complementary and provides some balance. The after-taste is slightly bready and slightly sweet.

M: Crisp and a little smooth, light-to-medium body, medium-to-high carbonation, finish is slightly sticky.

D: A little tasty, goes down easily, not too filling, mild kick, decent representation of style, this beer is poundable because it's light and has some flavor to it, but there are several other beers in the style that I would choose first.

I purchased a Magic Hat Spring Break sampler pack after rejoicing their long overdue arrival into Florida. After thoroughly enjoying #9 I was delighted to give Odd Notion '10 a try. Poured a cloudy, murky yellowish butterscotch color with many tiny bubbles cascading to the surface. Initial whiff envoked wheat, clove, and a little spice. I took a sip and let it swirl around. Yeast esters were dancing around with a hint of graininess and musty hops. Very refreshing. Welcome to the southeast Magic Hat, it's about time!

Odd Notion? You've got that right...

G – Aventinus .3

A – Cloudy yellow-orange, a basic wheaty beer with a weak head but ok lace.

S – A split decision: on the good side, a Champagne quality and a nice sour impression, and on the bad side there is a slight chalky funk riding a Bohemian malt, but very little olfactory overall. Though this beer tastes nothing like it, I am reminded of the good-bad duality of flavor of Cigar City Maduro Oat.

T – Acrid and chalky is my first impression. Succeeding quaffs have revealed a more tasty set of elements, but still this beer is a bit strange and possibly without reasonable direction. I detect rich German-ish pale malt, a punch of citric-alcohol flavor, Champagne dryness, slight sour tinges and a bitter hoppiness in the finish that is quite nice. Again, a split decision: I had some disdain for the first half and some admiration for the second half. I guess this means that this pale beer warms well; an unusual trait in my experience.

M – Good mouthfeel, sharp carbonation; the feel enhances the flavor.

D – Not exotic enough for the initiated, not tame enough for the average set.

Pours a straw color, barely unfiltered like it says it is, almost no head but nice carbonation.
Smells of esters, and it for some reason is not the most appealing smell.
Tastes like a blonde lager, and is not a bad beer at all, but sure does not compare to bombshell blonde.
Nice beer overall.

Thanks to LargeSarge for a bottle of this.

A-Hazy light golden yellow with a thin white head that fades quickly and leaves spotty lace.

S-Light zip of spicy hops, lemon zest and biscuity wheat, malts. Nothing overwhelming but pleasant nonetheless.

T-Again light but a nice zing of spicy lemon zest hop character lies on top on a biscuit wheat malt body. Minor notes of clove and white pepper in the background.

M-Medium-light body, sharp and crisp with good lingering spiciness and a building dry finish.

D-A nice collection of flavours. Overall a tasty brew that goes down easy. Just enough going on to keep things interesting throughout. A decent brew I wouldn't turn down if I had the opportunity for another.

C. Cloudy
H. Dark Yellow
N. Sweet Notes; not from hops or malt, nose mainly from the yeast. Hints of lemon and anti-bacterial soap....very fresh

Alright, I was very excited about trying this beer, mainly because Magic Hat does change the recipe every year and every season. This year for spring we are blessed with an un-filtered ale. It is very interesting beer. Unlike most unfiltered offerings from other breweries I feel that this beer is a bit more complicated. It dances on your tongue and has a hint of sour notes right off the bat. Who would figure that this beer settles down nicely on the palette unlike that sour little brat in the movie theatre that makes noise throughout the entire movie. I will always recommend picking up the seasonal sampler from Magic Hat just to try the Odd Notions, but this Spring offering even more so! Enjoy this one while it is available!

The beer pours a hazy pale gold color with a thick frothy white head that slowly fades to lacing. The aroma is decent. It has a light and refreshing pale and wheat malt scent along with some lemony zest and touch of citrus hops. The taste is good. It has a nice hop bitterness that works well with the pale and wheat malt bill. It is goes down easy and finishes light with some lemony zest . The mouthfeel is great! It is a medium bodied beer with good carbonation. This is supposed to be a wheat/pale ale hybrid beer. It's pretty damn drinkable and actually has good hop character. It's unfiltered, giving it a traditional wheat ale feel.

A soft cloudy golden yellow with a crisp white head. A small amount of sediment sifting at the bottom of the bottle. Smells like a good wheat beer yet slightly mellow. The taste is much the same but there is an odd hop bite that reminds me of metal or dirt. Feels nice, medium bodied and a little oily. Not a bad beer but not the best.
Cheers.
