Poured into a nonic a deep burnt orange with a large fluffy slight off white head that held pretty well, downhill from there.Aromas of caramel and some char,a off soapy aroma comes into play as well.Flavors start big and caramelly sweet with some underlying toastiness and then a real funky finish that has some soapiness and sourness that shouldnt be there.Sorta unpleasant on the palate,to me a clunker of a beer from Magic Hat.

Hex Magic Hat Brewing Company Amber/Red ale 5.4% alcohol. I was a the market and was in the mood for a malty craft beer and well I found exactly what I was looking for in this sixer.

A- A vigorous pour produces a one inch off white head that ligers for most of the beer. Leaves a decent patchy rings of lacing on the pint glass.

S- Sweet malts and mild floral hops upfront with musky carmel and brown sugar in the backbone.

T-M- Rich bites of caramel and toffee upfront followed by sweet sugary malts that are balance by a light hop charactor of citrus and grass.
Mouthfeel is smooth and mildly carbonated. Slick feel on the tongue.

Overall this is a drinker that goes down easy and goes with almost any occation. An excellent offering from Magic Hat... cheers!!

Review from BeerAdvocate Magazine Issue #44 (Sep 2010):

Quick to foam with a dismal lace, the dried orange peel color shows some clarity. Vague hits of caramel, smoke, spicy rye and herbal hop in the nose. Creamy medium body yields a modest smoothness. Malty, with a big flash of caramel sweetness to start. Hop bitterness and a hint of rye go for balance as a thin layer of smokiness covers the palate. Semisweet, ending with herbal hop, remnants of smoke and a touch of biscuity grain. Magic Hat is up to their old tricks by concocting this creation.

I thought this was a pretty good beer.
It was an amber color with a very thin tan head.
Caramel aroma, sweet bread.
It had a caramel taste with a whiff of smoke late.
Crisp mouthfeel.
This beer evoked memories of a crisp New England fall day, the leaves have changed, and woodstoves are burning.

A - Nice deep copper/amber with two fingers of tan head. head has pretty good retention and leaves some nice lacing.

S - Sweet malts, a bit of caramel and a small amount of spice in the nose.

T - Taste has a bit of a bite, both from some spice and relatively high carbonation. Sweet caramel malts come through midway through the taste. Finish is actually rather bitter.

M - Medium mouthfeel that is by turns a bit sticky sweet, and quite dry and bitter. Finishes dry.

O - Pretty good taste, and one of the better Magic Hat beers I've had, but still well below a number of other Oktoberfests. The bitter element is not particularly welcome.

I'll preface this by saying I'm a stickler for Oktoberfest lagers, and American brewers that produce lackluster ales masquerading as "O-fest" beers really annoys me.

That said, I was on my way to a party recently and stopped at a store without much selection. Decided to pick up a 6-er of this.

Got some of that roast in the nose, like more of a fall seasonal.

Tasted some faint roast, some faint berries mixed in, along with some caramel. Finishes a bit funky, weird hop taste lingers. Interesting, it got better as it warmed up. More of the roast came through and finished more sweet than bitter.

All in all, a decent beer. Not my fave, but not the worst either. Interesting enough to have a few.

Presentation: It was poured from brown 12oz bottle into a mug. The label has a best by date and lists the ABV at 5.4%.

Appearance: The body has a beautiful orange amber color with good clarity and some carbonation. The head on top is a creamy off white color about two fingers tall and has good retention. 2/3 the way down the glass and a thin cap is still holding on. There is not much in the way of lacing as the head just slides right down the glass.

Smell: The aroma has an odd astringent sour hop note with sweet caramel, candy like maltiness.

Taste/Palate: Its medium body sports a sweet caramel candy and toffee like character with some bready and lightly toasted notes in the background. This is balanced by a somewhat sour leafy/grassy bitterness from the hops. As this is Amber Ale and not a true Oktoberfest Lager the finish is slow and light hop bitterness lingers. The carbonation is well balanced and active keeping the texture lively and light.

Notes: Overall this beer quite drinkable and captures the spirit of fall and Oktoberfest.

12 ounce bottle, Best enjoyed by dating etched onto the neck of the bottle. Pours red tinged medium amber. Minor off white head, leaving some scattered blobs of lace here and there. Malted up nose. Pleasant enough offering. More maltyness on the tongue and following through to the finish. Smooth and clearly sessionable. Notes of vanilla, honey, medium amber malts. Nothing special, but an easy drinking, malty and reasonably decent fall type of brew.

Thanks to bu11zeye for sharing this bottle.

The beer pours a light amber color with a white head. The aroma is strong toffee with not too much else. The flavor is toffee, earth and dirt. Medium mouthfeel and medium carbonation. Like a lot of beer from Magic Hat, the beer is average across the board.

12oz bottle poured into a put glass.

Pours a fairly red amber color with a small whit head. Lots of creamy lacing. Nose is malty, smoky and rich.

Taste I very sweet with a smokey finish. Its it a light hop bite but not much. It's closer to a rauchbier than a Märzen though which is a bit of a dissapointment.

Hex opens with a malty, yeasty nose that resembles fresh baguettes, mixed with brown sugars, berries, and touches of grapefruit from the hops. The mix is light, but well-balanced, tending more toward the malt and sugar aromas, and enticing.

On the tongue, the beer opens with malt flavors, especially biscuit and toast grains, with small touches of rice. Some berries, apples, and oranges drift lazily in the background, lightly tinging the flavor profile with sugars. Hops are mostly noticeable as a light buzzing on the tongue and soft palate, with just a shade of citrus zest. Subsequent sips reveal lesser fruit flavors, and more lemon/lime citrus notes, the sweeter sugars not quite keeping up with the hops. The aftertaste is mainly grains, with hints of sugar and grapefruit, and fades slowly. Mouthfeel is medium-light, and carbonation is medium.

Overall, this is a good beer, but not much separates it from many of its peers. The flavors are balanced and nuanced, even if a bit more sugar would help them stand out, or at least provide a bit of excitement.

12oz bottle pulled from my fridge poured into a standard pint glass. once again, the bottle claims theres a freshness date on the neck, but i cant find it.

pours a light orange amber color, a touch hazy. one finger of off white head that faded to a ring rather quickly. no real lace to speak of. this could go for either an oktoberfest or an amber ale, or even a pale ale.

not a huge aroma. sweet caramel malts, some what reminiscient of an oktoberfest in the way of sweet munich malts. a little smokiness as well.

amber ale, sweet caramel malts, nise dose of citrus hops, oktoberfest, sweet munich malts, a touch grainy, almost a little lager like, and a touch of smoke on the back end. not a bad taste, but nothing mind blowing. kind of a hybrid beer style.

medium bodied. crisp carbonation. hops are noticable just a little on the palate after the sip.

a pretty drinkable beer, a nice alternative to a marzen for the season. i like magic hats whole take on this beer, but not something i would go out of my way to seek out again. if i somehow come across it again, ill drink it, but i prolly wont buy it again.

Reddish orangey amber with an off-white head that settles quickly. Low aroma of caramel and toffee sweetness. Unbalanced and non-complex flavors of sweet caramel and toffee, notes of biscuit and ripe fruit, not enough offsetting bitterness to keep this from being one-dimensional. The smoked malt must be false advertising. Another disappointment from what was once one of my favorite breweries. Send this one to the grave and bring back Jinx, Heart of Darkness, Humble Patience, Ravell, and the experimental smoked porter and scotch ale.
