a- bottle poured into a tasting glass, thin layer of lace, large bubbles, slight haze to it.

s- oktoberfesty, sweet caramel malt, some biscuit, slight hop hint, lots of bread.

t- pretty much echos the nose, sweet breads, not too complex here.

m- medium, prickly.

d- good, goes down easy, would drink this again, this would be good to cook with as well.

A- Light amber with a fairly large white cap. The head is nice and creamy and has good retention. A nice coat of thick lace.

S- Nutty, brown-ale malt hints come off first. Smells Autumn-ly. Definitely some toasty caramel malt in there. Some earthy hop notes. Strength fades.

T- Dark slightly medicinal fruit notes. Some floral, earthy hops. A good amount of bready malts. A fair amount of nutty, grainy malt and spice hints (coriander) remind me of Fall. Some buttery hints.

MF- Light, slightly creamy body with moderate carbonation. Very slight bitterness and warmth.

DB- I would say this is just an average Fall ale. Decent flavors all around in a refreshing beer. Pretty much what I would expect in a Magic hat Autumn seasonal.

a night of inulgence i decided to go out and just drink the crap out of my fridge, i grabbed this one after running around the yard with the kids for an hour. served cold and poured into a pint glass, consumed on 10/08/2010.

the pour was decent at best, a orange color with a minimal head that faded quickly and left no lacing in its wake what so ever. really not impressed here.

aroma is bready malts that seem to be past their prime. a mix of wet cardboard and muted grains and hops. just not going where i want it to in anyway at all. thin feel leads to a palate that just seems to struggle to find itself the entire time. just not sure what is going on here but it is average at best. earthy and thin finish struggles to find direction and leaves you wanting more.

overall a pass. no where near the best i have had from the brewery or the style.

Magic Hat Hex is a very clear amber beer with gold and copper tones. The thin, dense khaki head leaves very nice lacing on the glass. It has a very malty aroma, with notes of melanoids and grass. It's just about medium bodied and pretty silky. It has a dusty finish. This is pretty straightforward. Did these guys really make a lager? It has a lot of Bock qualities. It's bready and pretzely and almost hints at rye. There's just enough bitterness to keep it drinkable. It's not really my thing, but this is really solid for Magic Hat.

poured in pint glass. "Best by" date was nearly 2 months in the future, and purchased from Total Wine at beginning of Fall seasonal season, so should be fresh but ...

A - reddish amber with minimal head that disappears quickly despite long-lasting carbonation bubbling. Very slight cloudiness.

S - off odor; something makes me think of soap. Malty & yeasty. (2nd sample much better and lacking yeasty aroma).

T - malty & funky; short-lived bitter aftertaste fades to clean finish. (2nd sample less funky but retains a little of the unpleasant bitter metallic flavor).

M - OK

D - given the odor and taste, no way for this brew to be highly drinkable. The worst Magic Hat I've had.

Edited with tasting of a 2011 bottle sampled on 9/2011. I averaged the ratings across the two tastings given that the second sample, although much better, had traces of the faults noted on sample 1.

Poured into Pils glass from 12oz bottle with freshness date.

A- Light amber/caramel color. Head disappeared so fast I hardly got a chance to see it. Even after a few sips almost no lace remains on the glass.

S- Strong hints of fruit, with apple coming most prominently to mind. A hoppy (?) sharpness contrasts with the overwhelming sweetness, though I didn't find this observation to translate much in the area of taste.

T- Sweet fruity notes slide quickly to a more robust, malty body with a pleasing touch of toffee. More hops certainly wouldn't have hurt.

M- More carbonation than I'd prefer. Kind of zaps the taste buds a little...

D- Overall a nice, full-bodied fall beer that I'd definitely pick up again. Very drinkable in my humble opinion.

Pours an orange amber color with thin cap of soapy head, diminishing quickly. Scent is rather weak and contains a musty sweet malt scent with some notes of watery fruit. Taste is mild as well, not until it warms can you pick up some raost qualities along with the off tasting, musty sweet malt. Watery fruit background. Medium bodied with the ample malt, but too much carbonation thins it out and makes it dry. A beer that really does nothing for me... not good enough to drink more than one, not bad enough not to finnish that one.

A- A clear orange liquid with some amber hues. The head is thin and splotchy.

S- Apples, brown sugar, vanilla and a touch of smoke.

T- Smoke, sweet caramel, vanilla, and apples. Very unique and enjoyable. This oddly reminds me of a light quad.

M- A light amount of carbonation with some lasting sweetness.

D- Very flavorful and drinkable. Much better than I expected. All of the flavors compliment each other nicely.

about average amber ale appearance, a tad lighter than a traditional octoberfest giving a film of eggshell colored head that leaves a little lacing.

that buttery magic hat flavor comes out in the aroma, with a touch of caramel. thats about it.

a bit less buttery in the flavor, with more toffee and caramel. the slightly smoky finish does not work as well as I think it would in a traditional marzen lager style seasonal. a touch metallic and phenolic with plenty of diacetyl. kind of a balancing act of off flavors they tried to pull off, here. That being said, it ends up being rather smooth flavored, when not picked apart critically.

watery light body, but with a weird caramel stickiness that doesnt show up until after the swallow and leaves some sweetness sticking to the sides of the mouth and back of the tongue.

drinks average. I can see it being enjoyed by "the masses" which is what magic hat seems to be trying to do these days. I don't enjoy it much, and I may not finish the bottle.

12oz bottle into a pint glass

Magic Hat Hex is just an average looking beer. It has a copper color with red and orange streaks.  A small ring of head is unimpressive, and next to no lace is left on the glass as I work my way through.

The smell caught me off guard. This beer is fruity as all get out. Some brown sugar and slight sweet caramel from the malt represent, but they're blanketed by peach and white grape scents. This all adds up to a weird and somewhat disconcerting experience, especially when the style of beer has nothing to do with fruitiness.  Just an odd bird, maybe this should be an odd notion beer and not a full release.

Thankfully, the fruit is gone from the taste. The palate comes across more as  toasted malt mild earthy hops. The only odd flavor is a touch of bubblegum. The beer is  still strange but is tasting like an Autumn spin on the amber now, and I think I'm finally starting to see the connection Magic Hat is going for.

Hex has a clean finish with residual medium bitterness. The carb is a touch light and the body is a touch thin.  But the mouthfeel isn't bad, just nothing out of the ordinary. Overall, I'm not a fan of this beer, but it isn't horrible. In my humble opinion, this is a  poor attempt at something new and was really unnecessary - the traditional Amber and Oktoberfest styles have a wide range of beers that push the envelope without weird flavors and scents. And don't get me started on the miseducation that comes with Magic Hat labeling this an Oktober beer.

Pours dark orange with white head resting on top. Aroma of citrus, light fruit, and kiwi. Flavors of light fruit and citrus constant with some pears that pass through as well. A spritzy drink with a light body that is very sessionable. This is not a typical autumn ale but is still worth a try.

Had a bottle with a slice of pizza at Liberty St Tavern. I read the label and mistakenly thought this was an Oktoberfest, but I guess you might call it an Oktoberfest ale. It's not too far from the style, but the caramel character and hops are both bigger that your typical O-fest. The malts were a bit dull, though I did enjoy the spicy floral hops kick at the end. Not a bad pizza beer, but nothing special. Good for a session I suppose.

Poured from 12oz glass.

A- Pours a coppery amberish color. Two finger eggshell white head shows lower retention. Light streaky lacing on the sides of the glass.

S- The aroma is weak...pretty weak to say the least. Some bready caramel malts combine with a floral hops. There is a light metallic hint to this one as well.

T- The caramel malts come into play from the front of the beer. A light metallic hint comes in the middle with a toasted malt as well. There are hops in the ending of the beer that show a light bittering that helps balance the beer as much as it can.

M- Medium light mouthfeel. Carbonation is good for the style. Light malts and metallic hints left on the palate. Bittering hops and toasted malts left in the aftertaste. The beer itself is a little underbalanced but metallic hints killed most flavor profile. No real drying on the palate from alcohol.

D- This beer to me was a train wreck. The ABV on this seems to be on par for most brewery Oktoberfest beers. I wouldn't want to drink this one again unless I can get no metallic flavors. Magic Hat seems to be killing off any business they want from me.

A light creamy 1/2 finger head fades semi quickly over a semi clear toasty orange amber color.

The nose brings some sweet malts, a little syrupy aroma, some light toasty and red malts, and slight malt extract syrupy aroma. Also some light spices, a hint of nutmeg like aroma.

The taste is very bleh! More syrupy extract flavors, some malt extract, syrupy flavors. There are some malts, a little toasty malt and red malts. Also more of the spices, nutmeg and some other weird spices that don't really seem to belong. It finishes with more of the spices and syrupy flavors lingering, dries a bit on teh finish. It also gets a bitter and very slight metallic flavor on the finish.

The mouth is medium bodied with decent carbonation.

The drinkability is not the greatest. It has a low abv and nothing really bad, but the sticky syrupy flavors and spices that linger make it a little iffy.

Hey Magic Hat, you got me into craft beer, and I always have a place in my heart for you. I also loved the little quips under the caps, and even had a keg of Fat Angel at my wedding. When did your whole thing become about the gimmics and lost beer? All your best beers are killed for shit like this. Even the return of Blind Faith it was not nearly as good as it used to be. TWhat happened to you guys?! Please take a step back and look at yourselves and remember when it was about the beer.

Appearance: Copper in color, two finger foamy head

Smell: I got a carmel, apple smell initially and then after agitation tomato... I had to have a friend get a whiff for confirmation and indeed he did smell tomato.

Taste: Again carmel malts and apple sweetness upfront and then kind of caught off guard by hops I didn't think this beer had much balance they came through a little to much in the taste not all that bitter they just seemed out of place. the malt was pretty "meh" you could tell there was something there but nothing really stood out. an odd roasty taste.

Mouthfeel: The higher side of Medium carbonation (a bit to much for my liking but not unbearable.)

Drinkability: Had it not been for the carbonation I would have been able to drink six but fiz just really isn't for me personally

A - Dark, rich copper color, clear. Large head that reminded me of fluffy meringue. Lacing was nice, leaving circles based on the previous beer level. Label was interesting, a party of nefarious witches and goblins. Somebody's legs lay dead or passed out. Hidden symbols also appear woven into the background. Cap had the message, "Just say 9."

S - Not that strong, maybe a bit of cardamom.

T - Malty up front, but quickly overtaken by the hops. The beer didn't feel like it was balanced correctly.

M - I didn't like the bitterness from the hops at the end, which lingered for too long.

D - Ehhh, average.

Got a bomber for $2.99 at the brewery on Friday. Label says to consult the best by date stamped on the neck but there ain't nothin there, oops. Served cold in a standard
pint glass.

This mostly clear orange-copper brew throws up a very dense and creamy head with an odd neon yellow hue. Smell and taste are similar to describe. Fairly sweet with a little malt thickness behind it, some fruity aspects to the sweetness with mellow mulled spice. Odd and hard to describe in the ways unique to Magic Hat. Feel is kinda thin but a hoppy resin gives it some feel and the carbo is kept creamy by some hidden viscosity. Finishes with some light malty citrus. Easy to drink and begets pondering.

A: Pours a reddish gold color with slight head that fades quickly.

S: Sweet malt aroma dominates with a noticeable sweet apple aroma.

Poured from a 12oz bottle into a Magic Hat HEX pint glass

Appearance: Pours a medium amber in color, generous size head builds and sticks around for a bit. Head retention was subpar on this one, and the lacing was very thin. Still a great looking beer.

Smell: Nice aromas come out here, I get a great hop presence which isn't huge but discloses some nice floral notes, malt spice is evident here, I also get a nice roasted/smoke aroma as well which is inviting.

Taste: Big caramel malt flavors up front here, really buttery and soft, blended through with a slight residual hoppiness, some tiny citrus notes blend nicely to the malt profile. Towards the finish I get a little bit of that smokey flavor I got in the aroma, which adds a nice little zip to this offering. Also got a bit of diacetyl here but it wasn't too bad, the hop profile keeps it in check with some bitterness cutting through any buttery/thick flavors that were evident.

Mouthfeel: Good carbonation here, body is generous and sits well on the tongue without getting wet. Hop's add a nice bittering effect here which is a nice surprise.

Drinkability: Overall, HEX is no Jinx as far as Magic Hat seasonals go, but it is a good replacement to Roxy Rolle's that offers some good characteristic's for a fall beer. The hop profile is the standout here, really melding nicely against the big smokey and toasted flavors infused in the malt. Sessionable at 5.4% ABV, couldn't really drink more then 3 in a sitting since the malt tends to get big bodied after a few, but overall a nice go-to fall seasonal from Magic Hat.

A - Carbonated crystal copper body with a huge head full of large bubbles and the color of eggshells. As the head recedes it offers a humocky top.

S - Nice combination of slightly sweet malt and an edge of leafy hops.

T - Solid malt base of thin bread and sweet quick roasted malts. The finish offers a nice very mild hoppy bitterness. This is a very flavorful Oktoberfest style brew. One of the best flavor combination I've had in this style.

M - The feel is dry but not too dry. I think the feel in this brew may have been an accident. There's allot of carbonation making for a coarse texture, which seems to be contradictory compared to most other dry feeling beers I've had.

~ Overall this is a very good, drinkable, sessionable, likable brew. You should certainly pick up a six pack for yourself.

look: 4 | smell: 3.5 | taste: 4 | feel: 4 | overall: 4.5

Presentation: It was poured from brown 12oz bottle into a mug. The label has a best by date and lists the ABV at 5.4%.

Appearance: The body has a beautiful orange amber color with good clarity and some carbonation. The head on top is a creamy off white color about two fingers tall and has good retention. 2/3 the way down the glass and a thin cap is still holding on. There is not much in the way of lacing as the head just slides right down the glass.

Smell: The aroma has an odd astringent sour hop note with sweet caramel, candy like maltiness.

Taste/Palate: Its medium body sports a sweet caramel candy and toffee like character with some bready and lightly toasted notes in the background. This is balanced by a somewhat sour leafy/grassy bitterness from the hops. As this is Amber Ale and not a true Oktoberfest Lager the finish is slow and light hop bitterness lingers. The carbonation is well balanced and active keeping the texture lively and light.

Notes: Overall this beer quite drinkable and captures the spirit of fall and Oktoberfest.

A - Poured a nice dark amber with an inch of fluffy white head. Looks pretty decent.

S - You get a nice whiff of amber malt with a slight roasty character, some caramel, and some mild hop tones.

T - Very enjoyable actually. You get some sweet caramel followed by some slight nutty amber and finishes dry with some hop flavor. Very good overall.

M - Light to medium bodied. Drinkable,

D - Overall I enjoyed this more than the Roxy Rolles which for some reason I was comparing it to since I thought they were both Oktoberfest's. I may just pick up the Variety case since all beers are overall enjoyable. Great beer.
