12 oz poured into DFH glass

A - light brown and hazy with little head.

S - Metallic. Reminded me of cheap pale lagers my dad used to drink.

T - Dry malty at first with an earthy green bitterness after.

M - Light and highly carbonated.

D - It was alright, but not something I would buy a six pack of.

The beer pours an orangish/amber color with a thick frothy off-white head that slowly fades to lacing. The aroma is decent. It has a nice pale and Munich malt scent along with a dry, fruity yeast aroma. It has a sweet, malty aroma. The taste is decent as well. It has a rich, Munich malt sweetness that goes down smooth with a dry lager yeast finish. There is a touch of yeast esters in the flavor. It also has a light nuttiness as well. The mouthfeel is fine. It is a medium/full bodied beer with adequate carbonation. This is a smooth, easy drinking beer with decent malt character; a fine seasonal.

Amber red pour with reddish cream head. Not much retention. Light cascades of lace.

Strong malt nose with slightly fruit twist. Weak cherries and maybe some strawberry.

Tastes like a fruit octoberfest. Strawberry more than cherry, though. Tastes raw and unfinished. Maybe rhubarb?

Feel is slightly thick and syrup. Cough medicine?

Not a very good beer.

Pours a hazy amber to copper color with an off white head. In the aroma, a small earthiness. In the taste, a sweet maltiness and a hint of earth. A smooth and medium to small bodied mouthfeel, with a clean, sweet earth in the aftertaste. A bit sweet and small earth, nothing too exciting.

Noted on the bottle as "ourtoberfest," Magic Hat's effort at a unique take on the Oktoberfest/Marzen style falls far short. Caramel color with vague orchard fruit aroma. Insufficient malt with a hint of overripe apple. An odd note to the hops finishes up off kilter.

12oz bottle

A-Pours a brownish copper color with an off-white head that reduces into a thin ring of lace around the glass.

S- The aroma is sweet toasted malts, a touch of dark fruits and caramel.

T- The taste like the aroma is a nice malty octoberfest base. There is some toasted malts and caramel with just a hint of hops in the finish.

M- The mouhfeel is medium bodied with a good amount of carbonation.

D- Overall, this is a pretty solid octoberfest beer. Not something that will knock your socks off, but a pretty good beer for the style. Worth a try.

A - Amber and copper body with a low head.

S - Served really cold but it was crisp and had some hops in the nose.

T - Surprising for an Octoberfest/Marzen, much cleaner and less vegetable flavor than I typically experience from the style. There was definitely some hop flavor and bitterness involved.

M/D - Medium body was appropriately matched to the flavor. Easy to drink at a reasonable ABV so something I could session for sure.

12oz bottle served in a glass beer mug.

L - slightly hazed amber color with an beige head that thinned to a ring and didn't leave more than a speck or two of lacing.
S - pale malt and and underlying earthiness.
T - some sweetness upfront but then that earthy yeasty taste hits with a light sourness although it does finish with a sticky sweet aftertaste.
F - medium bodied with good carbonation.
D - I would drink it again if offered but I wouldn't spend money on it.

Very clear amber colored ale with a nice tan head that leaves ust a little sticky lacing as it fades.

Very nice caramel malt aroma, with a nice touch of hop spice. This is all about the malt though, bready and rich. Some deep mysterious fruit aroma is the overall effect, maybe sweet cherries. Taste is very bready and sweet. Not much if any of the hop spice, and very little in the fruity esters department, but just a nip of the cherries in the finish. This is a nice clean finishing ale, maybe closest to an actual Märzen style I have had.

Medium in body, nice smooth mouthfeel, only mildly carbonated. Great fall session beer IMO.

A: poured from a bottle with minimal head and no lacing. Looks like a very deep yellow urine to a light copper color. Not looking good for this one already.
S: I can't say anything more than this beer smells like a Bud, Miller or Coors.
T: Not good for either an amber or Oktoberfest like the label says. Bittersweet indiscernible flavor that seems to get better the further down I go in the glass.
M: very thin with high carbonation.
D: not something I want more than one of. I'll give one more a try but I may be pawning these off on some of my friends.

Overall: Not worth the space it took up in my cooler to bring it back to Biloxi.

EDIT: tried it again tonight and this beer without a doubt is terrible. I don't know if I'll give these away or if I will simply sink pour the other four because I don't know if I'd wish this beer upon my worst enemy. Dos Equis Amber is more enjoyable to drink.

12oz bottle poured into a put glass.

Pours a fairly red amber color with a small whit head. Lots of creamy lacing. Nose is malty, smoky and rich.

Taste I very sweet with a smokey finish. Its it a light hop bite but not much. It's closer to a rauchbier than a Märzen though which is a bit of a dissapointment.

A-amber with a thin cream head that disappears

S-lightly roasted barley with some honey, extremely faint smelling.

T-very malted and somewhat smokey with the smokiness really coming in with the after-taste with just a touch honey. very smooth.

M-heavy creamy carbonation, wet finish.

D-nope, taste becomes awful. I actually had a difficult time finishing

12 oz bottle poured into a Sierra Nevada imperial pint. 5.4% ABV, Enjoy by Nov. 30 2010.

A - Brilliant clarity allows the golden orange color to shine and show off the nice carbonation. Good low tan head with nice retention but only a little lace.

S - Fall-like crisp caramel malts and light biscuity notes with an inviting aroma. Nutty hints to the grassy and lightly citrus nose are nice. The hops impart those balancing things but in the end it's still a little odd. Metallic notes.

T - The flavor is very metallic with a harsh dry bite on the finish that kills the nice caramel maltiness and grassy hop flavor. This is almost downright undrinkable.

M - Dry metallic tin-like finish with a medium body and a touch of hop bitterness balanced with caramel malt sweetness. Way too metallic though - it ruins it.

D - Nope, drain pour. Each sip is insulting to me. The metallic flavor and feel is so bad. There is lots of hope within this beer. If they work on it, it could be good.

"I put a spell on you because you're mine." - CCR

Amber with a white head. Great clarity. Odd chunky archipelago retention. Few lacey cling-ons. Bottle dated.

Smells...like not much. Faint, faint aroma of toasted malt and soupy English tea bag hop.

Fruity ester laden malt with some sort of mineral accompaniment. Maybe I get a little of that "cherry wood smoked malt" but I think that's 'cause I'm trying way too hard.

Not bad but I can't picture ordering one unless it's a poor, poor tap list. Glad I just bought a single.

Every once in a while, Magic Hat surprises me with a tasty brew. I happen to think that #9 is a tasty session beer...but I know plenty who disagree. I'm ready to cheer!:

A: Dark, ruby red, with moderate carbonation and about 1/8 inch head.

S: Not much on the aroma for an amber. I've got to admit...I smell plastic.

T: Mildly medicinal, without much floral component, and it has a stale caramel aftertaste.

M: It's not bad in terms of mouthfeel, but because the taste leaves more to be desired, that's not saying much.

D: This will be my last tryst with "Hex."

New fall seasonal from Magic Hat, I tend to like their beers more than the average person.

Pours a cloudy orange color with a very small head, hmmm hope it's fresh. Smell is nothing special.. some faint hops. Taste has pretty good mouthfeel, medium bodied. Definitely doesn't hit me as an "octoberfest" as the bottle claims. A very bland/boring beer... just some faint hops and not much maltiness here, especially for the style. Definitely drinkable and wouldn't pass one up, but very boring and not up to par with the rest of the Magic Hat beers. Meh.

A sweet non-descript beer that could loosely be classified as an Oktoberfest beer.

Glowing orange in color, the beer shows brilliant clarity, high carbonation, and is moderately headed. Low on staying power and light on lacing.

Flavors and aromas are caramel dominant and with a sweetish sugar shock. Light hop character could be American or German- just too light to tell. Mineral rich and fruity, the beer is just off from it's style-sake. Lacking the complex malt character that is displayed by original Oktoberfests leaves this one tasting very one-dimensional.

Sweet and thin to the palate with a mild minty-grainy finish. Ture to Magic Hat beers, this one is sweet, fruity, and poorly represents its stated style.

ST: 12oz bottle poured into a porter glass.

A: The beer pours a bronze, reddish brown with light golden hints at the bottom of the glass. When held to the light, the beer becomes lighter brown, and steady carbonation can be seen. A white fluffy head settles and vanishes quickly leaving a light ring around the glass and a slight mist of white covering the rest of the top.

S: It has a nice aroma: spice, malt, brown sugar, candied maple, fruit, bread, and a hint of crisp citrus.

T: Lots of sweet caramel and toffee malt change to crisper apple and citrus tones. There is a slight smoke towards the finish, however, it is crowded out by a long bitter and green finish (it reminds me of chewing on an orange peel).

M: On the lighter side of medium body, Hex also has pleasant carbonation.

D: It is a sweeter brew and it does not have an exceptionally high alcohol content.

Overall: Magic Hat produces drinkable beers. I have yet to have one that was truly terrible. However, I have not had one that was truly terrific either. I love fall beers, as do most beer drinkers. Hex's aroma really is nice and its flavor profile is very interesting. Yet, the long green and bitter finish does not balance the beer (which might have been the intent). Instead, it disturbs the pleasant sweet malt and crisp apple flavor. I wouldn't be upset if someone brought a six-pack of Hex to my house; however, with all of the other delicious fall seasonal beer options, I would not buy it again myself. I must say, from the dork perspective, Hex's packaging is excellent.

HEX! "Ourtoberfest"

Purchased a sixer from Young's Pharmacy, NY 43.

Best enjoyed by Dec 31 2010.

Pours a clear orange with a half an inch of head. No lacing. Light carbonation. Aroma definitely reminds me of fall -- kind of like wet leaves? I'm trying to decide if it's pleasant or not and I think I'm going to err on the side of pleasant.

Taste is nice too, but not complex at all. A malty flavor start to finish, with a very slight crispness at the end. Unfortunately, I don't know that I would seek this one out again; there wasn't enough going on to make it particularly memorable.

I love fall. Another new seasonal brew to try. I am a tad bit different than many on this site... I am not going to hold a grudge on rating this, as others are because MH was sold to NAB. Let's rate this as a craft brew

A- a classic amber red color that has a head that quickly dissipates. The colors are consistent with the theme, no doubt

S- some toffee and prune like fruity scents. Very bready and malty as well. There is a slight earthy fig theme in the brew. Even some slight alcohol. One knock is the flavor does not necessarily jump out at you

T- not bad as far as an amber ale goes. Hex stats with with a fair amount of caramel and malty notes. The flavor is disciplined in the sense the malt stays true to american amber themes. The same fruit flavor is there throughout. I like this depiction of MH's fall flavor

M- very carbonated but flavor is sticky

D- OK.... so here it is. Magic Hat creates an Octoberfest interpretation... and it will get blasted. Meanwhile, I think this is a great brew to intro someone to craft beer. I also think this is a delicious brew that can be enjoyed in a sitting. I think this is very tasty

Reddish copper in color with a creamy off-white head. Lots of bubbles briskly rising to the top, in formation.

Nice aroma. Toffee, caramel, mushy overripe red apple, cinnamon and the faintest hint of smoke.

Interesting flavor. A delicate smokiness, a toffee character, some Delicious Red apple (ie. crisp, juicy, lightly sweet, and having that pectin-like thing going on). Even a little bit of a citrus/metallic twang, but with warming this is relegated to the background, letting the nice, autumnal malt flavor come through strongest.

I've found Hex drinks best with just a little bit of chill on it...and that improves the texture too...seems a little sharp when too cold, but with some chill off, it's got a supple, silky smoothness that's quite wonderful.

Love the name and especially the logo/label. Do I love the beer as much? Just about. It took me a few meetings with Hex to really appreciate it and understand it. The real discovery was that drinking it too cold didn't do it justice.

12oz longneck.
A) Pours with a two finger head - tight and creamy. Then settles to a thin lacing. Clear body amber in color.
S) Toasted malts. Caramel. Subtle floral notes - heather.
T) The taste doesn't match up to the aroma. A decent malt flavor up front with notes of caramel and toffee. The malts start to shine after a few swigs, but in the finish a dry citrus peel taste that lingers.
M) Medium body but on the lighter side. Dry finish. Average fizz.
D) A decent Magic Hat but nothing to rave about.

Appearance -- Pours a deep amber, almost purple-hued, with one finger of sudsy white head.

Smell -- Plum, golden toast, lots of fruitiness, and a hint of earthy hops. Overall, on the sweet side with a little roast character.

Taste -- Quite sweet, lots of plum and red grape, grassy hops with a bit of spice in the finish.

Mouthfeel -- Medium to light in body with ample prickly carbonation.

Drinkability -- Honestly, not bad. I'm growing to like the Magic Hat lagers after Vinyl trying Vinyl this past Spring. While a little sweet to style, I would certainly drink this again.

Picked up a single today as part of a mixed six. Probably am done buying full sixers of Magic Hat except in desperation as I think they haven't made any excellent beer for a fairly long time. Pours transparent copper with an antisocial head. Nose is sweet and malty with whiffs of doughy bread but nothing exotic.

All malt in the driver's seat. heavy on the roasted tones. The finish is both smoky and metallic. Hops jump in at the end to further confuse things. Mouthfeel is watery and uninspiring. Not truly horrible but kind of disorganized and messy. It just seems like not a ton of care was put into this. Am I being too harsh?

Moderate head that leaves little lace. The liquid is clear with a neutral amber color.

Malty with strong caramel aromas. No notable hop.

The flavor continues on the smell profile. This is a malty beer with a little bitterness from some hop. Rich body with a low carbonation.

This is a beer of barley malt. There's very little hop presence. The aftertaste dies quickly.
