12oz bottle poured into pint glass

A- Golden brown and clear. Foams up nicely but leaves quickly dissolving into a white rim around the glass.

S- Caramel and spicy notes, subtle hops in nose.

T- Malty up front with tons of caramel sweetness. Nice touch of hoppy bitterness and Smokey rye to finish off the deal.

M- Creamy body that’s deliciously smooth. Very good carbonation and coats the palate nicely.

O- My first Magic Hat offering and I am very impressed. Out of all the Oktoberfests I have had thus far I enjoyed this one the most. Would definitely purchase again and am looking for their other offerings. Any suggestions?

Poured with a thick yet bubbly three finger head that disappeared very quickly. The scent is quite strong and sweet with a typical German oatiness. Almost smell ginger for a nice Fall scent. The taste is where is don't follow as it is a bit weak with a sweet yet bland finish. The label says it has a " distinctly rich and flavorful" taste but I say it has neither. There is no richness and it seems sweet and lacking.

It's not a very dark brown, a light almond color, and it's mostly clear, but it's just dark enough and just hazy enough that it's practically opaque. The head is sweet. Big and thick like and IPA, with similar characteristics with good retention and a slow implosion leaving messy lace all over the glass.

Even with a bit of warming in the glass, there isn't much smell. A bit malty, a little crackery, but other than that, there's just nothing there.

Has kind of a Scotch ale vibe to it. Rye is mostly what my tongue picks up. Malt is there as well.

Pretty bland with some spicy bitterness in the end. Medium bodied. Slight nutty feel. Again, not much there.

I don't typically care much for the style, but this is an easy drinker. Warm or cold weather, wouldn't matter, it would go down fairly easy and with only moderate ABV, you could make a long evening out of it.

Once again Magic Hat has left me with a beer that is below par. I don't know what it is about this brewery but the vast majority of their brews just don't do it for me. But I keep trying I
I drank this out of a tumbler . At first I thought well it descent so maybe it will taste descent, but that did not last very long.
It was a good amber color with very minimal head that dissipated quickly.
The smell wasn't to bad about what you expect.
The taste was to bitter for an Oktoberfest beer
And the mouthfeel was awful almost like a stinging fizzines.
Overall a below average experience

Poured from a 12 oz. bottle into a Samuel Adams Boston Lager glass. Taken from a Magic Hat "Participation" variety pack.

Appearance: Pours a translucent amber color. Has a small, foamy head that dissipates quickly and leaves little to no lacing.

Smell: Has a caramelly and slightly smoky aroma with a bit of Noble hops.

Taste: Mildly bitter and up front with a bit of caramel sweetness. Finishes bitter with a touch of smoked malt as well. I can tell there are some good flavors at work here but it honestly feels like it needs to be turned up a notch. The flavors are kind of weak and muted, but I can sense the potential.

Mouthfeel: Crisp, with a water-like body.

Overall: A kind of "meh" beer overall. I can see the idea behind it and appreciate some of the flavors; I just don't think they pull it off very well. This is a common theme with Magic Hat it seems. Lots of interesting flavors, just poor execution.

So is it an octoberfest masquerading as an amber ale? Well, yes, but there's a hop-quotient in it that throws things for a loop, and not necessarily in a good way. Pours the color of orange-blossom honey, and there's a faint tangerine smell (and some honey). Lots of carbonation. The small head held its own, and some minimal lacing. The initial taste was decent (some honey, malt), but that was quickly replaced by the flavor of bitter citrus rind. And that taste hung around too long for me. A good-looking beer, but this one has an identity crisis.

Pours copper color with minimal head. No lacing.

Smell is really nice with lots of cherry, apple and sweet malts.

Taste is o.k. Not that much going on for me. Little bit of malt up front. Maybe a hint of fruit. More bitterness than I expected.

Mouthfeel is light bodied.

Overall this was just o.k. Smells better than it tastes.

Appearance: Pours a clear amber color with a nice head; the retention wasn't great, however, but it did leave behind quite a few dots of lacing

Smell: A full-on blast of caramel malt and a touch of grain underneath

Taste: Caramel malt dominates the front end, with fruit developing in the middle and a hint of smoke bringing up the rear; the aftertaste is rather sweet, almost cloying

Mouthfeel: Medium body with moderate carbonation

Overall: Not bad, fpr a sweeter style beer, and the smoke adds an interesting twist; just a bit too sweet and cloying for my palate

Poured into an Irish pint glass.

The beer is a pure golden caramel color. An off-white head dissipates rapidly but leaves a film. Light lacing sticks to the glass.

The beer smells of sweet caramel, malts, and butter.

The beer tastes just like I want my marzens to taste: loads of sticky sweet caramel and malts. There's also some faint toffee and buttery biscuits in there.

Mouthfeel is Smooth and sticky, like a melted caramel candy.

Overall, I didn't expect this, but this might be my favorite marzen this year. Just awesome in every aspect. I'm glad the Brothers agree. This is really well done.

Magic Hat Hex has a medium, fluffy, off-white head, a slightly hazy, copper appearance with lots of streaming bubbles, and some lacing on the glass. The aroma is of medium-roasted, sweet, fruity barley malt and bread crust. Taste is of roasted malt, wood, bread crust, sweetness, and it has a nice underlying hop bitterness. The mouthfeel is light to medium, and Magic Hat Hex finishes mostly dry, clean, and very refreshing. This beer is super sessionable, and I rate it as being very good. Get some!

Magic Hat - Hex - Ourtoberfest

Bottle says S. Burlington, Vermont. I've had Magic Hat before, but never thier Octoberfest (or whatever they're calling it). I wasn't even sure that is was actually supposed to be a märzen beer when I first saw it. And after a 6-pack of it, I still not totally sure that's what they were going for. I think it was, but they missed the mark at bit. It's not bad, but it seems like they tried to spice it somehow and it seems more carbonated that some too. It's not quite as clear as some others, but it's no where near as cloudy as the Old Dominion was.

At least they got the color right. 5.4% ABV is printed on the bottle, but no sign of a bottling date. I was going to give them a bonus point for labeling it as 3/4 of a pint vs 12 oz, but I'm taking the point away for printing corny sayings underneath the bottle caps.

I'd drink it again, but not my favorite.

This offering from Magic Hat pours a nice pale orange color with a two finger light tan head and no observable lacing. Smell is weak, but I picked up oranges, bread, and some honey notes. Mouthfeel is world class. Very satisfying and full. Taste is some roasted malt, caramel and tofee upfront with grapefruity bitterness on the finish. The bitter is a little stronger than the sweet so I can't say it is perfectly balanced, but a worthy offering nonetheless.

A: Color is orange amber with a faint haze. Medium head retains a layer of foam on top of the brew and a cool looking lace pattern.

S: Caramel malt with subtle euro variety hop aroma.

T: Taste follows the nose with caramel malt and wood. Hops are in the background but present themselves on the finish for a nice bitter end.

M: Carbonation is appropriate for the style, a smooth medium body.

O: I enjoy this fall offering from Magic Hat. It goes down smooth and easy.

M: Has a medium body and a moderate amount of carbonation.

Starts with a broken bottle, not an auspicious start.
Pours a clear, bright copper color with a finger full of fine foam floating firmly atop. Good lace and great retention.
Smell is much like a hefeweizen only more so. Malt, bread/yeast, hops and citrus. Nicely balanced.
Taste is quite different with evergreen hops up front backed with malt, some citrus and breadiness. Not sure how they got so much difference between nose and tongue.
Medium bodied, effervescent on the front of the tongue. Drying and fairly clean at the finish. Aftertaste is just pine trees. A decent beer but not special. Wish I had gotten the same beer the brothers drank, I'd have preferred that one. So far, I am not impressed with this brewery.

The beer pours an amber caramel with a big butter-cream head on it with rocky bubbles. The beer is supper clear and translucent with mild carbonation bubbles running up the glass. Lacing is sticky, sheet-like, and wispy, and the head does mellow into a finger’s width quite swiftly but is still nice to look at. The beer smells very sweet and biscuity but also surprisingly like candied sugars, and there even seems to be a weird funk though I believe that comes about through the mixing of the different smells. The beer tastes rich and malty with some wonderful toasted and caramel notes and some nice sweet sugar. There is a slight bittering and citrus tinge in the after taste to suggest a hop presence but overall this beer is dominated by the malts which are toasted and biscuit. Mouthfeel is slightly watery but nicely gelling and creamy on the tongue. The tongue is left a little cloying with sweets and a little dry, but there is some nice saliva dancing in the mouth. Overall this is a pretty nice fall red with some nice warm flavors. It’s a little too sweet for me personally, but it tastes nice and is easily drinkable.

12 oz. Rusty orange pour. Just a few whisps of white, nearly no head.

Aroma, malty caramel, faintest roast/smoke. Straight forward but nice.

Taste, mild tea and herbal hop to balance the malty toffee. A slightly different amber/octoberfest blend.

To the lighter side of mid. More carb than the appearance would lead on. Drinks easy enough.

A fairly good non-hoppy red ale.

Into a pint glass:

A: clear red colored body yielding a one finger white head slowly dissipating into the body leaving a film of a head. No carbonation is seen rising and no lacing is left.

S: smokey maltiness with some light nuts here and there.

T: basically has the same flavorings from the smell.

M: light to medium with nothing harsh on the tongue, sessionable

O: not a bad beer, yet nothing spectacular, standard red ale, but probably only get it again on tap.

Yet another fine offering from our friends in Burlington, Vermont with Hex, Magic Hat's fall brew. Downed a few of these last night, some out of a bottle and one poured into a glass, and while I wasn't knocked off my feet, I certainly didn't find anything wrong with Hex.

It poured a nice clear orange color with pretty minimal white head (maybe a finger, finger-and-half) and practically no lacing on the glass.

The smell wasn't too overpowering and was fairly malty and smokey. The label says it's an Octoberfest, but I really didn't detect any of the same malts in other types, probably why this website classifies it as an American Amber/Ale.

Taste was largely the same: faint hints of malts and a nice smokey touch at the end. Mouthfeel was fine, not overly carbonated.

Overall, this is a fair/good beer. Nothing to special, but still better than most. The smokiness of Hex went really well with a burger, a cigar, and a late September night.

im not in love with this one. pours dark amber color with a tall tan head. smells like a ton of german malts, caramel and munich at least. sweet flavor without much hop balance, also not as complex as some of the other octoberfests out there. i like it with a big meal like stew or chilli, but as a standalone its not my favorite, especially when its still real warm out. mouthfeel is too heavy for me, it gets filling after just a few as the body is very big. still its smooth in the mouth and well made. overall i wouldnt select this over many others, but it isnt a bad brew.

I poured this average brew into my tumbler at 45 degrees. I hate to be like this , but yes the beer was a 3 all the way across the board. It was a nice amber color and poured a nice tan head, but that did not last very long. The beer had a slight caramel smell very encouraging. Taste had a slight sweet hit not too bad though. After taste had a bit of a bitter finish like a english ale. Did not like that too much. I'll try it again but I think I'm going find its not my favorite Fall brew.

Pour is a tad light for an oktoberfest, honestly. Light orange with a small head.

I get the caramel grainy oktoberfest base in there, but I want mroe overt sweetness, almost like a slick, sweet, smooth syrupyness.

Upon first smell, there is like loads and loads and loads of citrus fruits (pineapple, mangoes, and oranges). I think I kind of like it. The caramel notes come out to play, but just not enough.

The tastes dont mesh, and its not smooth enough for an oktoberfest. Theres a dominant earthy hop flavor that really doesnt go well with the slightly grainy, lightly sweet base beer. Odd aftertaste that I cant pin down. Kind of reminds of a flavor from Breckenridge Vanilla Porter. Not good.

Earthy medicinal hops really dominate, which doesnt work for me. i want those Citric hops to play well with the caramel malt, but sadly, nope.

What started so well ended in such failure. ugh.

Bottle supplied by the brewery.

A lovely amber in color with a short white head, more of a layer of foam, actually.

Nice aroma of caramel and biscuit.

The aroma carries over to the taste. Nice malt notes of caramel with a bit of a hop bite at the end. Nice.

Good body. Hefty.

Overall this is one of Magic Hat's better brews. They bill it as a sort-of oktoberfest, and I agree. It's worth checking out.

A - Pours a golden, almost orange, color; has a small head, but dissipates slowly and leaves some nice lacing; moderate activity of carbonation.

S - Presents a sweet smell with hints of citrus and caramel; very pleasant.

T - Not as appealing as the smell might suggest, but still enjoyable nonetheless. Has hints of citrus hops with a mild smokey aftertaste.

M - Full-bodied with medium carbonation; crisp with a clean finish; very easy to drink.

O - Overall, this isn't my favorite "Octoberfest" seasonal beer, but it's definitely above average and I would have no problem drinking more of these in the future.
