Procured a sixer at the grocery mart. Served in a pint size Sonoran pint glass.

A: Poured a tannish amber-gold with an off white head of foam that laces nicely on the glass. Clouded and thick-looking.

S: Not much going on here cept some light malt and a faint dark fruit presence.

T: Nice and mild, refreshing balance between malt and hops and nothing offensive reminds me why this is my favorite style beer. I get hints of honey, biscuit malt and faint floral hops. Finishes clean with a light bitter remnant left behind.

D: Glad I bought this sixer. I'll be killin it off this evening.

Value: For $6.99, what a deal. (623 characters)

Pours a light mahogany with very little head and zero lacing. Looks very thin even for an octoberfest. Lots of active carbonation.

Smell is pretty surprising. Pleasant bready malts up front with some fruit in there. sour cherries, plum, very sweet smelling and different for the style.

The taste is a weak interpretation of the smell. Strong bready malt backbone. Some tartness but it is more from the hops in the finish than any fruit from the nose. Somewhat watery and thin.

Mouthfeel is thin and a tad over-carbonated. Prickly in the tongue.

This beer is very drinkable and goes down easy. Not the tastiest interpretation of the style I've had but decent. Due to the light body and decent taste I would say this is very sessionable but not a beer I would reach for again. (778 characters)

A tawny gold tinted amber. Hex, Magic Brewing claims as their "Ourtobefest", a strange intensely flavorful concoction, that has no balance whatsoever, just a continual splashing of juxtaposed flavors. Even the aroma is a bit weird, with odd combinations of sweet malty notes combined with surprising bitter dry finish.
A very odd beer indeed.

Can be enjoyed as long as you forget all about recipe focus. To put it another way, TV's Dr. Phil might remark: "You are all over the place with this one." (499 characters)

Appears a semi transparent, lght orange toned amber with a small white cap that quickly fades away into a gentle cap and collar. Tiny speckles of lacing are left around the glass.
Smell is of toffee, caramel, vanilla, mild spice, fresh bread.
Taste is of the aromas with a hoppy punch and a yeasty bitterness. It looks and acts like an Oktoberfest but alas, it behaves like an ale on the palate. It lacks that smooth, sourdough crispness that I look for in a true lagered Oktoberfest beer. A mild wood like finish lingers.
Mouthfeel is medium bodied, heavily carbonated, with bitters of wood, yeast, and hops dueling with each other during the swallow. (652 characters)

Poured from a 12 ounce bottle into a pilsner glass.

A: An orangeish copper hue with bubbles, no head, and a faint glow. Mostly transparent.

S: At first, just beer, but then as it opens up, I smell sweet-sour scents, malt, and - credit goes to LairdChisholm - melon.

T: Mm, malt sticks with you, toffee-like, especially when swallowing. The main flavour has a caramelly flavour with a light character reminiscent to the melon scent. Overall, caramel toffee characterises Hex for me. The aftertaste is similarly sweet, but with a hitherto hidden hoppiness. It lasts a very long time.

M: A little sticky, but otherwise average.

D: A very enjoyable beer. Sweet, but drinkable. This should appeal to many people. Recommended. (725 characters)

A - Pours a bit of a hazy orange color with about a half finger head that fizzles out to a film around the edge rather quickly. No lacing here.

S - Odd smell here. Not bad, just odd. I get melon upfront. Most prominent is cantelope. I was surprised to as how pungent it was. There are also some very sweet caramel malts, orange and a touch of alcohol.

T - Again cantelope up front mixed with orange caramel malts and alcohol. Basically tastes exactly how it smells. Very, very bold flavors. The balance could use a little work though.

M - Very bold. A lot of carbonation that packs a punch.

D - Just a lot going on here. Can finish one no problem but I really don't feel like another. (689 characters)

Like the orange shade of amber for color. Smells malty and orange marmalade like. Rich flavor without a heavy body. Clean mouthfeel in the aftertaste, leaving you with that marmalade flavor as it fades. (Real marmalade, not that sweet orange jelly stuff). (255 characters)

Bought a Night of the Living Dead Variety 12 pack from Magic Hat when we did the groceries.
I tried the Hex 1st. Pours a slightly cloudy golden amber, almost no head, but carbonated OK. Slight lacing on what head is there.
A nice balance between malt and High Alpha Hops in this one.
This beer pairs nice with a Corned Beef on Rye. Could easily drink a couple as the ABV is about average on this guy. (402 characters)

A- Clear gold with a white head that fades quickly without sticking.

S- Faint hop aroma over some caramel malts.

T- Quick malts fading into caramel flavors which blend right into a spicy and herbal hop presence. A rather unpleasant after taste is created.

M- Medium body with a medium feel.

D- Not a terrible red ale, but not a great one either; just ok. (358 characters)

One of the Oktoberfest hybrids, brewed with ale yeast...I think they best labeled this beer using the Hex Ourtoberfest title. Pours into my Sam adams fest 1/2 liter krug, looks nice a dark amber body with a big cream light khaki tan head with fine scattered lacing. Aroma a touch of caramel and biscuit malts with a nutty finish slightly smoked finish. A hint of German hops as well blends nicely in the mix. This isn't bad at all, drinkable flavorful brew I really enjoy this roasted malt ridden caramel inspired fall session beer. Upfront sweet toasted malt with a nutty smoked finish. Herbal hops stand up nicely it doesn't bother me that this beer is an ale. Mouthfeel is light to medium bodied, with sturdy carbonation a beer I will revisit soon. Drinkability a couple more left in the 12 pack I wouldn't mind a whole six. (827 characters)

Now this is what I expect from Magic Hat - something just this side of drinkable. I had not tried their stuff for a while as I was not a fan. The cool fall box sold me. Sucker. Their brews just don't usually work for me.

This one tried very hard - too hard. It's smokey and malty. At least it is robust and not bland, but to me it is a poor balance. It will be a long while before I give them a chance again. (409 characters)

12oz bottle with freshness date. poured into a russian boot.

pours light copper in color. head is big and foamy and retention is good. leaves some spotty lace on the sides of the glass.

smells like carmel malt with notes of raisin, spice and herbal hops. also has a slight medicinal quality.

taste is where this beer fails. i get lots of carmel malt at first with the raisin found in the nose, but then all sorts of weird stuff happens. spicy notes seem to come either from the rye or smoked malts, but i don't get any smoked flavor. a fairly pronounced metallic taste rolls in and hangs around before a sticky sweet finish. a really odd combination of flavors and the metallic taste makes it kinda gross.

body is really thin with a decent amount of carbonation.

pretty drinkable i guess, but kind of off putting in the flavor department. claims to be an oktoberfest, but exhibits few of those characteristics. i'm consistently disappointed by magic hat, this is no exception. (981 characters)

I thought this was a pretty good beer.
It was an amber color with a very thin tan head.
Caramel aroma, sweet bread.
It had a caramel taste with a whiff of smoke late.
Crisp mouthfeel.
This beer evoked memories of a crisp New England fall day, the leaves have changed, and woodstoves are burning. (295 characters)

Reddish orangey amber with an off-white head that settles quickly. Low aroma of caramel and toffee sweetness. Unbalanced and non-complex flavors of sweet caramel and toffee, notes of biscuit and ripe fruit, not enough offsetting bitterness to keep this from being one-dimensional. The smoked malt must be false advertising. Another disappointment from what was once one of my favorite breweries. Send this one to the grave and bring back Jinx, Heart of Darkness, Humble Patience, Ravell, and the experimental smoked porter and scotch ale. (538 characters)

A golden amber color with some orange hues, good life at first with a robust off-white head but it quickly mellows out and becomes a bit too relaxed.

A funky herbal and tart fruit aroma hits first. Olives and medicinal earthiness all around, dark wheat, roasted barley becomes nutty with some subtle spices in the backdrop.

Dark malted barley with nutty-flavored maltiness, dry dark wheat and subtle brown sugar sweetness balanced with tangy-hebal hops and a slightly metallic-medicinal yeast flavor. The feel starts out pretty jazzy with a light to medium feel until it relaxes a bit too fast and becomes much more mellow and heavy feeling. The unique funky-sour yeastie wheat flavor is pretty nice but in a very subtle fashion.

A very interesting version of this style but the nuttiness goes a bit too far in the malt, otherwise good stuff. (849 characters)

Poured from a 12oz. bottle into a standard pint glass. Bottle has "Our"toberfest on label, leading me to believe that this will be an Octoberfest-type of beer, although style is listed as American amber/Red ale.
Hex has a cloudy amber appearance and a rather short head of foam
Aroma-Faint caramel and cinnamon notes.
Taste-Toasted malt notes, caramel, cinnamon and an underlying slight hop bite.
Overall, not too bad, could be a decent cool weather session brew. (463 characters)

Grabbed a single of this new one from MH today at Martys in Newton. Pours out a clear amber color, with just a small amount of lacing for the heading. Smell is a mix of sugar water, beets, (sort of wacko like in that regard) and some bubblegum. Taste hits the palate on a very sweet note, contains traces of fruit, toasted bread and a strange herbal character as well. Body is light to medium, with all of the flavors coming off on the stale side, thus not helping the thinnish mouthfeel. Drinkability, well...not quite a drain pour but I would be lying if I said I did not come very close. This is easily one of Magic's Hats poorest brews. Why they would bring this one out, and discontinue a great seasonal beer like Jinx is beyond me. Since they have already been bought out, I guess I shouldn't be surprised, but oh well.. Bad beer. (836 characters)

Appearance- Orange brown, light with a thin white head. Slightly Murky

Smell- Cinnamon, White pepper. Light spice with a squash like aroma

Taste- Sweet malts that hint orange are surrounded by Gentle spicy flavors. The white pepper smell comes through here very well.

Mouthfeel- Decent body with long lasting spice linger.

Drinkability- I could very easily drink 3 or 4 in session.

Notes: My first Magic Hat Brew. Not bad, try this one with meatloaf and cheesey mashed potatos (481 characters)

Looking up this beer on the Magic Hat website will tell you that it's not actually an Oktoberfest, it's an amber ale made with several different types of malts. However I still enjoyed it and will definitely drink more. The taste is very sweet and woody from the cherry wood smoked malt, and it's also light and easy to drink several in an evening. (348 characters)

Part of the Night of the Living Dead 12 pack.

A: Golden color, decent pour.

S: Kinda sweet, not easy to make out much more than a sweet, malty smell.

T: Nice, but I don't think its a true Oktoberfest. Maybe their take on it, but not what I normally expect from the style.

M: Good finish and a pleasant beer to enjoy

D: Very drinkable, and easy to have more than one. Perfect for a late summer, and I guess fall as well.

Overall it is nice, but still trying to figure how this fits the style. Oh well, I enjoyed it anyway. (527 characters)

I enjoyed this beer on a saturday as i was opening the bar at 4 pm.

A-mine was bottle poured and had a small head that did not linger. The color was Golden and appealing.

S-The smell was sweet and very mild, almost hard to find.

T-The Sweetness was stronger than the malt flavor, and both combine were light.

M-The ride over the tounge was smooth, no carbonation flavor enhancing during the drink.

D-The flavor is subtle and pleasant, but not my choice for an october-esque style beer. (489 characters)

While some may argue that it seems to be a little too early for this style, I welcome any challenge by Magic Hat to stimulate my taste buds.

Pours a mild amber color with a one-finger head into my glass. Looks about right for the style. No surprises.

Aroma is full of sweet, slightly smoky malt, much like one would expect from the style.

The taste can be described as containing overly sweet malt with just a hint of smokiness to it. It's nearly overwhelmed by this sweetness as such. There's a bit of butteriness/sourness to it as well. Hmm, the latter should not be present.

Mouthfeel is full of lingering sweet, slightly smoky malt. The offending flavors (buttery, sour) follow.

If this is Magic Hat's idea of an oktoberfest, I think I'll check out something else. It's still quite drinkable but they just can't seem to nail down anything past a basic lager (ales they excel at, somewhat). Still more drinkable than Becks version of the style. (954 characters)

New release in the Night of the Living.

A - A nice dark copper. Good head retention that lasted for half the pint.

S - Malt up front with a touch of smoke and spiciness. Slightly boozy nose.

T - Malty with spicy notes. A touch sweet but fits well with the faint smoke on the tail end. Reminds me of a roggen beer. A good bitterness with an earthy character.

M - Overall very clean, but rather thin on the body. Would have liked it a little more body.

D - A pleasant surprise. Definitely a much better offering for the brewery than some of the recent releases. Subtle. I liked it and can see this doing well on a crisp fall day. (637 characters)
