This is a very well made IPA. I've never had a wheat IPA before, but if this is how they taste I'm looking forward to trying many more! I really like what Magic Hat is doing with the IPA Tour, and I look forward to trying the next realease. Cheers!

I'm gonna give y'all a spoiler: I think this is an awesome beer. In a moment I'm going to go into the multi-part review, but first I need to say that this is one of the best IPAs I've ever had the pleasure of experiencing. And with no further ado:

Appearance: It looks cool, and the appearance is still the worst part of this beer. Cloudy like a homebrew gone wrong, but an interesting peach color nonetheless. This isn't what beer usually looks like. Huge, sexy, frothy head that gets cloudy and chunky as it settles.

Smell: This is luxurious. It smells like a county fair made of fruit. Hay, a little bit of passionfruit (!), pears, overripe oranges. I love it. The Simcoe hops are magic, and pair with the base malts very well.

Taste: Pineapple and freshly-cut hardwoods. It tastes like a cedar mill and a can of fruit cocktail. A little sweet, but it manages to fully satisfy.

Mouthfeel: Good. Not too fizzy, not too flat. The mouthfeel is hardest to describe because it's in a good place; it doesn't detract from the flavor the way Hex (also from Magic Hat) does. Very supportive. It's not syrupy, but it's not too thin either.

A - cloudy orange with a huge rocky white head that gets pitted and chunky as it slowly settles, leaving tons of super sticky resinous lace on the glass.

S - Dusty aromas of earth and mineral-laden well water with sugar coated grapefruit notes.

T - classic grapefruit and big time pine with a thick malt backbone. Biscuity, fresh, sweetly fruity and bitterly hoppy. This is very tasty.

M- big bodied, chewy, and actually somewhat creamy. Sits on the tongue like an anvil.

Excellent beer! Hits all the right notes for the style with aplomb.

Poured into a standard U.S pint glass.

Appearance - 1.5 finger head. Creamy, small foam bubbles and nice lacing. Murky orange color...looks like a combo wheat beer/IPA.

Smell - May be the best smelling beer I've ever sampled. A perfect combination of hops explosion and citrus.

Taste - Wonderful! Absolutely wonderful! Perfect combination of hops and fruity notes. The hops is strong and present but leaves a very smooth finish with little aftertaste.

Mouthfeel - Very good.

Drinkability - Very easy drinking beer considering the very strong hops aroma and taste. NOt sure if the over-the-top hops/fruitiness would make having several of these too much or not.

Overall - One of the best IPA's I've had to date. Has some similarities to the Flying Dog Raging Bitch Belgian IPA, but the Magic Hat concoction may be a little easier to drink and APV is slightly less as well. I highly recommend this one for IPA lovers!!!

Stats: (according to website) 6% ABV / 45 IBUs.
Part of the "I.P.A. on Tour" promotion of Magic Hat.

Poured from bottle into pint glass.

Appearance: Very orange and hazy, sticky lace and carbonated well. Not very fizzy, settles out just fine. The color makes it very inviting and looks like it will be very citrusy and hoppy.

Smell: Very pleasant citrus/floral scent and a slight scent of the hops. Almost fruity in its scent, but it is pleasing.

Taste: Great notes of orange/grapefruit up-front with a slight bitter tinge to it, settles out into biscuits and lemon. Seems that they wanted fruitiness at the beginning, then to settle into a slight bitter, biscuity finish. This fits well with the "American IPA" designation, as its rather floral and citrusy.

Mouthfeel: The bitterness prevents it from being perfectly smooth, but it is easy on the palate, not very thick or chewy. The bottle says 6% ABV, but that is not easily detectable.

Drinkability: Magic Hat describes this as being an American Wheat IPA that is wet and dry-hopped. It is very tasty, not amazing, but seems like a nice casual beer. I would definitely have another. It seems to be more of a summer-time IPA, but the fruit/citrus is a nice relief in the cold winter.

Poured from a 12 ounce bottle into a pint glass.

This beer pours a very, very hazy deep straw color with about a fingers worth of head. Retention is poor, but lacing is great. The smell is great, it's dominated by citrus hops, but there's some heavy wheat smells in here too. Very good smelling. The taste is also great. Slightly resiny piney hops and citrus notes take the nose, but instead of a malt background, there's an inoffensive wheat background that lets the hops shine straight through. A hop lover's dream.

The mouthfeel is also great, it's thin for an IPA, and fairly carbonated. It works with the wheat feel, though. It's als overy drinkable, my glass didn't last long at all! Another great IPA from Magic Hat's IPA on tour series. I hope the next one, a Black IPA named Demo, lives up to the other three in the series so far.

Bottle from their winter variety pack.

Poured into a pint glass, beautiful opaque orange color, like apple cider with a big, fluffy head that is retained for a long time.

Aroma is mostly grapefruit with some herbal notes.

Excellent mouth feel, nice bitter grapefruit hops, smooth, balanced, delicious beer. Has a dry finish with a little lingering bitterness. Terrific beer, and with its relatively low ABV of 6%, nicely sessionable. Alas, it is seasonal, and hard to find already. I'd love them to bring this back for an Encore!

Presentation: It was poured from a brown 12oz bottle into a Pint glass. ("3/4 Pint of Ale" as they say on the label.) The label has a freshness date and the abv is listed at 6%.

Appearance: The body is very hazy and unfiltered with a golden orange amber colored body. This is topped off with an inch of thick and creamy off white colored head. The head holds on very well and keeps a small cap of foam on top till the last sip. On the way down the glass it leaves cool lace rings behind.

Smell: The aroma is sweet and juicy with loads of citrusy, orange zesty hops over sweet biscuity and wheaty maltiness. This is very mouth watering and inviting.

Taste/Palate: Following the nose it has good balance of sweet maltiness and citrusy hop bitterness. It finishes with semi-dry wheat notes and plenty of the hop bitterness. The palate is medium bodied with a smooth almost chewy texture. Its carbonation is well balanced.

Notes: This is one of the best beers from Magic Hat in some time. I love the balance and bright juicy flavors. I hope this will become a regular in their line up.

Well, picked up a six pack of this after enjoying some Magic Hat HIPA earlier in the year. The one liner under the cap read, "How Did You Get Like This?" Poignant.

Poured from a bottle into Sierra Nevada pint glass. Pours w/a nice two finger head, clingy lace. This beer is cloudy as hell!.. almost looks like cider in the light I was in. Smells grapefruity, some nice hoppage. Though my expectations weren't too high, this beer tastes actually really good. Magic Hat has found a winner in this IPA/Wheat hybrid... I found myself making repeat trips to the fridge for refills, it's a drinker for sure. A good amount of carbonation, not syrupy, you can notice a smoothness from the wheat that you don't normally get in a regular IPA. Hop level is no where near the HIPA, which also attributes to the smoothness and drinkability of this one. This beer also gets tastier as it gets warmer, which rules.

So, if you're a dude looking for a total hop fix, look elsewhere. The Encore is just a solid subtly fruity, endlessly drinkable celebratory ale to usher in the new year. Enjoy!

Appearance - Almost like apple cider with a hazy orange color and golden foam head. Almost no head off of the pour and it thins out to a little collar. The lacing creeps down with the beer but there is still some left after it is finished.

Smell - Warm apples, sweet spices, a dry orange odor, floral and wintery hops, and finally a faint grape and grapefruit scent with other sour citrus scents.

Taste - A sour and cider-like orange beer. Light on the hops at first with a wintery hops finish that cuts the sourness out of the aftertaste but the dry orange taste lingers with a nice bitterness.

Mouthfeel - A nice hop bite that hits the roof of the mouth and fades on the tongue. The body is well balanced with a smooth finish.

Drinkability - About as friendly as an IPA can get, everything is balanced. This beer is a joy to sip on by the fire and will leave you feeling good but its not quite a gulper. The friendliness does take away from the beer as it loses the extra hop bite that an IPA should have.

Magic Hat Encore is a lively, hazy amber ale with a thin, elastic, bobbly head that has excellent retention and lacing. It has a very hoppy aroma with pine and orange that's almost sweet. It's medium or medium-light bodied and smooth with a clean, dry finish. It tastes simple, fresh and bitter with lots of hop flavor. There are notes of fresh pine and citrus... maybe tangerine. The biscuity malt provides outstanding balance. It flirts with sweetness. This is a simple and tasty IPA. Great job, Magic Hat!

Bottle from the mixed-six aisle at Cary Street Martin's, Richmond, VA.

Pours very hazy, almost murky apricot. Light tan, tight head that sticks around forever and doesn't show a sign of breaking up if I let it sit out all evening. (I would try this experiment, but then I wouldn't be enjoying this fantastic-looking brew.) The cap settles into irregular clumps, calling to mind a big Belgian IPA like Houblon Chouffe - and I don't use that comparison lightly.

The nose follows closely on the heels of its odd, intriguing appearance. Spicy citrus up front, but a big dose of yeasty, bready malt balances. This one feels like a winner already.

Surprising juicy fruit hits you on the first sip, but a tangier-than-the-nose-lets-on wheaty malt backbone backs it up. The finish is orange and grapefruit rind bitterness - not this beer's highlight, but hardly a weakness. Lively carbonation prevents any stickiness. A slight touch of warming alcohol peeks through at the end, which is surprising given the middle of the road abv, but I feel like I'm nitpicking at what is otherwise a very special beer.

This is a stand-alone brew - my feeling is that food would detract from this very beer-y beer. Drinking Encore brings to mind epic tastings with other beer nerds. Indeed, this is a beer that demands advocacy. Tell your friends - this one is a keeper!

Poured into a tulip glass. This is probably the best beer Magic Hat has put out in bottles in a while. If you had that 100 IBU IPA and enjoyed it then check this out!

A - Amber in color, sort of caramel. Looks like a New England IPA.

S - The smell is very nice, however I rated it down because it's not overly strong, you really need to waft it to smell it. Citrus, piney, and definitely some wheat.

T - Very hoppy and spicy, it's great but may dominate your palate, not that that's always a bad thing.

M - Possibly the best part, biting carbonation, sticky and resiny.

D - This depends, the average hop head could kill six, but this could necessitate antacids in others if consumed in mass.

Over all very nice!

Quite a hazy IPA, which would seem to promise plenty of up-front hops. Color is a peachy orange/gold, the head is plenty creamy and long-lasting. Along with all that haze, it looks a right beaut.

Aroma is a wow-er, lots of bright, breezy, clean citrus fruit hops, like a tropical fruit punch spiked with lemon-lime soda. Malts are hard to discern, but there's a sweetness wafting into the nose that's sort of tart and candy-like, and I'll suppose that's them.

Taste is predominantly fruity, with big sweetness tempered by tartness. Tart, super-clean, bright hops are the name of the game here. There's a ghost of a resiny vibe in the background and in the finish, but this mostly remains a pungently fruity IPA. Encore never tips the scales in being too sweet or too bitter/tart, exhibiting a perfect balance. It's new-school for sure, as the malt and everything else is an afterthought, without the entire beer seeming one-dimensional. Ultra-refreshing, especially with a huge grapefruit blast hanging around in the finish. This is great.

A smooth, round, creamy texture is the knock-out punch that could've been but never was. This feels just a little too aggressive and prickly. Let the bright and breezy flavors deliver the electricity jolt, not the carbonation. Still, it feels fine enough, but I would've loved a softer feel here.

I repeat: this is great. I'm sure this would be a much bigger sensation if it were brewed by Deschutes or Alesmith or some such--and I'm not the biggest Magic Hat devotee myself--but gotta call 'em as I taste 'em, and this is a fantastic, fantastic IPA. One of this brewery's best-ever beers. I demand an encore, as in: "Give this permanent year-round status, Magic Hat!!"

Poured into a pint glass

A- pours a very hazy golden orange. good head that keeps foam as i drink.

S- upfront tropic and citrus fruity hops. some spice. slight sourdough.

T- Light, refreshing, zesty. Mostly a citrus hop profile, light pine. some malt for a background but not the traditional "balanced" malt bill. Orange in the finish. Crisp hops that burst.

M- Wet, some sharpness. mellow hop linger. Not an over powering bitterness. A bit light.

D- Very high. Surprised by this East Coast IPA. Kinda like a jr sculpin. An exciting offering that I am planning to get more of.

Woody orange, oak, color and pretty cloudy, with a thin head that falls to film fast but sticks to the glass well...
The smell is hops, really coniferous hops and a really nice sour orange but isn't super strong...
taste is well balanced nice pine hop, not to floral but some nice flower notes has some orange notes as well that balance it out well, the taste is consistent all the way through and is really fresh...
it is very crisp the kind of thing that make you go ahh and smack your lips after the first drink...
a really really good IPA, isn't to floral which I like, very very drinkable I would buy a second.

Slightly hazed pale apricot colored with a full inch of fluffy white foam that settles out slowly leaving bumps and dimples of foam.

Bright and inviting aroma of tangerine and orange rind.

Flavors of bright citrusy hops upfront, moving to fresh cut pine. An understated honey malt rides beneath adding some balance. Subtle notes of cinnamon and toffee. Firm bitterness lingers, changing to red grapefruit rind and sappy pine notes.

Smooth and even mouthfeel. Very tasty and drinkable beer, my favorite IPA from MH thus far, I hope they keep this one around.

A-Very clear looking orange hue. One thick finger head that disappeared quite quickly.

S-Get a very fruity aroma. Maybe some banana in there. I believe these Amarillo hops tend to bring out a sweet papaya aroma.

T-Good bitterness up front along with a tangy fuitiness. There is some sweetness along with a bite towards the end. Does however have a little after taste.

M-Smooth finish. Nice complexity from beginning to end.

D-At 6% abv I'd say this is an acceptable IPA. More drinkable than their H.I.P.A.

T- Most noticable is a spicy hoppiness. Also nice citrus, malt, and caramel flavors

M- High carbonation, medium-full bodied, a bit of a bready feel

A-Pours a hazy honey/orange color. White head is frothy and level. Instead of receding, this head slowly gains momentum throughout the first few minutes after the pour.

S-Whoa. Um, this smells really good. My type of hop profile here. Super ripe, juicy, fresh citrus and tropical hoppiness. Exactly how I like edit: love my IPAs. Malt acts to balance the burgeoning fruity hop attack. Smells great.

T-Tastes just like grapefruit juice. Has that signature grapefruit tang on the back end. Very citrusy and juicy. Sweet maltiness is pretty delicious in its own regard. I like the nose a bit better, but this is damn good. Wheat hangs around in the background of every sip. Ripe, lively and delectable.

M-Medium bodied. A bit resiny. High carbonation. Not overly bitter. Flavor lasts for a bit.

O/D-This is a damn good beer. I swear if this wasn't a Magic Hat beer, it would get much better reviews from site members. This one is underrated. Probably my favorite Magic Hat brew.

Poured from a 12oz bottle into a US tumbler pint glass.

A: The beer is a deep gold color, with a short off-white head that fades slowly and leaves a thick lace on the glass.

S: The aroma contains floral hops, fruity citrus and light caramelized malts.

T: The taste starts out with sweet flavors of citrus and caramel that are quickly followed by a piney burst of hops bitterness. The malt character is hearty but not too heavy and brings a good balance. The after-taste is slightly hoppy and slightly sweet.

M: Crisp and smooth, medium body, medium carbonation, finish is slightly sticky.

D: Tasty, goes down very easily, not too filling, good kick, good representation of style, this is a very solid beer to drink for a long time.

Pours amber color, slightly hazy, with a 2 finger width foamy head. Head retention is very good, as is lacing on the side of the glass. Has a malty, wheat odor with hints of pine and citrus (at the end). Taste of citric undertones with a slight bitter hop, ending in wheat undertones. Aftertaste is a little too soay. Not a bad beer, though. More on the lines of a strong American pale wheat ale.

From the bottle, plucked from Magic hat's winter seasonal pack.

This one is billed as an American Wheat IPA and is exactly that. Pours a cloudy orange with a thick head that holds its own. I was actually a little worried after the pour, thought it might be a jumbled mess but it's actually an extremely well-balanced ale. Fruity nose balanced by lots of American Hops. It's kind of like #9 meets Sierra Nevada, which is meant as a high compliment. Silky mouthfeel, very easy to drink for a hoppy ale. A bit bitter and grassy on the finish.

Kind of surprised it was included in the winter pack, it seems like more of a summer beer. Maybe there's a double-entendre in the name, like one more blast of summer amid the schwarzbier and the porter in the pack.

This would be a go-to IPA if it were year-round brew. I actually prefer it to the Sierra Nevada Torpedo.

Encore - Magic Hat Brewing Company, part of the winter sampler pack. Poured from the bottle into a glass, Encore's got a two finger thick off-white head, nearly impenetrable lacing, and a hazy dark honey brown body.

Smells like grapefruit-y west coast hops, maybe a little bit of holiday spiced malts.

I taste a kind of cranberry and ginger mixture along with the hops. Its actually very nicely balanced.

Mouthfeel is pretty clean and crisp. No hops lingering.

Overall a 4.25 for Encore - Magic Hat Brewing Company. Asides from the seasonal sampler back, I probably won't buy this brew again. I'm still in my IPA training wheels, honestly.
